How to run SEO tests you don't want to be associated with
-
A client has a competitor who is ranking above them for a highly competitive term they shouldn't really be able to rank for.
I think I know how the site got there, and I think I can replicate it myself with a quick test, but it's definitely grey hat if not black hat to do so.
I do not want my own sites and company to be damamged by the test, but i'd like to let the client know for sure, and also i'd love to know myself.
The test should take about a week to run, there is no hacking involved or password stealing or anything damaging to another.
How would you do such a test? I'm dubious about using my own server / site for it, but would a week really matter?

thats very helpful, I forgot about the hidden whois thingy!

Would need to know more about the test. Many point to sites that have a load of cheap links and say that they should not be ranking so well with such cheap links, but in many cases these sites have a few really good links amung them that earns them their place.
I would not be so quick to suggest they do not deserve their place

The first might not be ethical. You could try your tactics on a website you are associated with, and already is an established domain. As a personal example, I created a Magento extension to handle administrating category attributes. For my own case study I wanted to try out, I pointed links at the Magento Connect store that hosts the plugin page instead of a blog post or store page I developed. Some probably have ethical problems with this. One downside is you don't have access to Analytics, but tracking keywords shouldn't be tough.
The next is to grab up domains and start testing away. This is how I got started back in SEO around 6 years ago. Grab whoisguard to protect others from seeing domain registration information if you are worried. Personally, I wouldn't be. After all, who really cares that you are testing SEO out on a domain that no one cares about? (Although, I will say, your guinea pig websites often graduate testing status and become worthwhile websites without you intending)
Hope that helps. Maybe others have more ideas.

SEO Links in Footer?
Hi, One of my clients uses a pretty powerful SEO tool, won't mention the name. They now have a "link equity" tool, which they are using on a lot of their client's sites, which include tons of fortune 500 companies. It involves add footer links to your site that change based on the content of the page they are on. The machine learning tries to figure out the most related pages and links to them with the heading tag of that page as the anchor text. Initially this sounds very spammy to me. But then, it seems a lot like "related products" tools that many companies use. The goal for this tool is to build up internal linking, especially for deeper pages on their site. They have over 10,000 currently. What are everyone's thoughts on this strategy?

Active, Old Large site with SEO issues... Fix or Rebuild?
Looking for opinions and guidance here. Would sincerely appreciate help. I started a site long, long ago (1996 to be exact) focused on travel in the US. The site did very well in the search results up until panda as I built it off templates using public databases to fill in the blanks where I didn't have curated content. The site currently indexes around 310,000 pages. I haven't been actively working on the site for years and while user content has kept things somewhat current, I am jumping back into this site as it provides income for my parents (who are retired). My questions is this. Will it be easier to track through all my issues and repair, or rebuild as a new site so I can insure everything is in order with today's SEO? and bonus points for this answer ... how do you handle 301 redirects for thousands of incoming links 😕 Some info to help: CURRENTLY DA is in the low 40s some pages still rank on first page of SERPs (long-tail mainly) urls are dynamic (I have built multiple versions through the years and the last major overhaul was prior to CMS popularity for this size of site) domain is short (4 letters) but not really what I want at this point Lots of original content, but oddly that content has been copied by other sites through the years WHAT I WANT TO DO get into a CMS so that anyone can add/curate content without needing tech knowledge change to a more relevant domain (I have a different vision) remove old, boilerplate content, but keep original

Do industry partner links violate Google's policies?
We're in the process of The Great _Inquisition_piecing together a reconsideration request. In doing so, we reached out to an agency to filter and flag our backlinks as safe, should be no-followed, or should be removed. The problem is, they flagged several of our earned, industry partner links (like those pointing to us, HireAHelper, from 1-800-Pack-Rat and PODS for example) as either should be no-followed or should be removed. I have a hard time believing Google would penalize such a natural source of earned links, but then again, this is our second attempt at a Reconsideration Request, and I want to cover all my bases. What say you Moz community? No-follow? Remove? Leave alone?

Massive rank drop for 'unnatural links' . Help!
Hi Everyone, I work for a company called Danbro - www.danbro.co.uk Recently a massive penalty lead to a huge drop across all keywords in Google including the brand name. Since we have conducted a massive clean up; (requesting competitors to remove duplicate content, removing some poor quality links etc etc) We still have not seen any improvement whatsoever nor has Google responded. Has anyone ever received a positive response from Google? Since we sent a reconsideration request our ranks actually went worse!! Any advice would be great
