Question about local SEO when you serve many more cities than you have brick and mortar locations
-
My URL is: http://www.mollysmusic.org for the record.I run a music school that serves in-home lessons to a whole slew of cities. Since I only have 3 brick-and-mortar locations, I can't make google local profiles for all the cities served, but I want to get seen by those people searching in their own cities. Right now, our biggest competitor, takelessons.com, is top ranked for every single city you can think of, because they have individual web pages for every city served. Their content is repetitive and scrapey, and to me, that says "doorway page" which supposedly can get you de-indexed. I'm reluctant to do that because I'm afraid I'll get banned, but I have to compete. I also want a strategy that can scale when we move into new areas. Is there something that makes TakeLessons's content NOT a doorway page? What's the best practice for getting ranked in multiple individual cities if you run a service? Thanks in advance.

Hi Molly,
Thanks:) So glad you found that article relevant. When I wrote that piece, it was because this concept of city landing pages is so important, but so little had been formally written about it. The response has been great! I'm very happy if it will help you. Good luck!

Miriam,
I'm usually wary of people plugging their own content, but this is totally relevant and awesome. Exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.
-
Thanks Paul and everyone else for your excellent answers.
I think the general consensus for my strategy will include relevant city pages (maybe the top ten in each radius), that includes music venues, karaoke bars, open mic cafes and the like. Then, we'll have blog entries about relevant events in our service areas. It's a lot of work, but it's added value for our students and prospectives, so I think it's worth the fuss.

Gracie,
In addition to the "good content" City Pages that Miriam and William recommend, you may also want to blog about music happenings in each city. Set Google alerts for music keyword phrases associated with each city you serve and use the Alert-identified information to discuss upcoming music events and also to provide information, photos, and video for events that have taken place. Such a blogging process might help you establish yourself as a part of each music community you serve. Each blog post gives you the opportunity to focus on one aspect of the music scene of a particular city. Good luck!

I would create a separate page for each city instead of one page with content covering many cities.
Linking out is a good thing. Ask yourself, "Will these links improve the users experience"? If yes, then include them.
-
Hi Gracie,
William's advice is right on. Typically, when a business gets away with thin and/or duplicate landing pages like your competitor is apparently doing, it's either because a) the pages are really, really old or b) because Google doesn't have something better to display. You can provide that 'better' solution for Google.
I think you'll find my recent article on the concept of City Landing Pages to be useful. Many business owners have told me it has really helped them clarify their options.

Thanks, William.
Do you have any advice on how to split up location content? Should I designate one page for each place, and then infuse that with unique content, or should I try to fit it all into one place?
The more I think about this, the more questions come to light. For instance: would making a little directory of, say, local open mic nights, karaoke bars, and venues help? Would including a bunch of outbound links to these places hinder us by giving away link juice?

It may be working for them now, but using the same recycled content is not a good long term strategy. Plus, if the content stinks it doesn't really matter how well they rank because people with hit the back button (and google keeps score of that).
Focus on creating content that's going to make users have a positive experience on the site. Use case studies, photos, testimonials, videos, city/town resources that are relevant.
If the site was about construction - link to official city/town page with relevant permit info, ect - things like that.

E-Commerce Cart Migration SEO Advice
Hi all, First time post here. We operate a small ecommerce store and plan on moving cart, most likely from Interspire to Magento or possibly Prestashop. We want to be sure not to damage our current search rankings when making this move and ideally improve our rankings at the same time by utilizing the new cart’s seo functionality as best we can. Stage 1 of the project will see us simply move our current store from one cart to another. For this move we are keeping our existing single domain and intend on moving our current set up without making many, if any changes to content, product descriptions , URL’s etc as we believe this best practice for ensuring our current rankings remain as they are- is such thinking correct? Or should we do otherwise Stage 2 would see us operate a multi lingual, multistore, with 4 domains operating with 1 back end. For the 3 new domains we are looking to set up these storefronts in whichever manner will be most beneficial from an seo perspective We welcome any advice as to what we should consider? What we should and shouldn’t do? and best practices for this project Please advise if any other information is required to best answer our query Thanks for taking the time to read our post, any forthcoming tips and advice will be greatly appreciated

Will two numbers on a local listing affect me?
The reason I'm asking this question is. I was on the phone with a Google Rep yesterday for one of my google places. It was in reference to map maker and the fact that I only wanted one number on the listing. About a month ago I had it, so I deleted the listing's local number and than had an 877 number. The problem is when I checked on Friday the Local number was then added back by a Google moderator in Map Maker. So, now there's two numbers on the listing. He told me that would not affect my NAP info, which I don't believe.

He also went on to say that Google goes through listings and if they have an 800 number they may delete it and replace place it with a local number. Has anyone delt with this and can Verify what he says to be true? Additionally, will my NAP be affected if this is the case? Thanks.0 -
Why does my competitor rank so well with so many paid/traded links?
Greetings everyone! I've really been enjoying my Moz membership these past few weeks after studying my data and comparing it with my competitors I think it's high time I started asking some questions. The website I manage has a very good ranking history but over the past year we've seen a slight decline in our SERP positions. I don't think this has anything to do with on-page optimization but rather with our link profile. We have only about 10k links total while they have 175k - our mozranks are nearly identical, but his moztrust is 4.46 and our's is 3.51. I am guessing, on our end, I need to remove some of these low-quality nofollow links (though I'll be honest I have no idea how we obtained them to begin with) but what I don't understand is how our competitor is ranking so well because when I browse their link profile, it is filled with paid link and traded link directories that don't appear to be penalized for what they are. I was under the impression that this was bad SEO, but now I am thinking I should just play his own game and submit to these sites too. Looking for any advice or ideas on a better way to compete... ❤ Jennifer

Too many nofollowed blog comments with exact anchor text
Back in my dumb days, I decided to use Fiver to get 25 backlinks from .edu sites. Well, they were all nofollowed, and they share space with hundreds of other sites spamming them. Top top it off, all the spam links for my site are exact-match anchor text: embroidered patches. If you look at my link profile in OSE, it looks so polluted with these. I'm just looking for post-Penguin opinions about this--if it has the potential to hurt. Since Penguin, I have moved to the #1 position for the KW embroidered patches, but I am still scared that future algorithm tweaks will incorporate this blog comment spam. What do you think?

What do you think of Theme pyramids for SEO?
Hi, Just been reading up on theme pyramids, I have seen these before but found a good article on the subject going into quite some detail. http://www.canonicalseo.com/theme-pyramids/ Using the word 'Pyramid' does scream black hat to me but looking at the structure, this must be the best way for internal linking. Even the keyword structure looks good, Example: homepage - shoes category - red shoes sub category - size 7 red shoes Building anchor text links for shoes, red shoes or size 7 red shoes will benefit all 3 terms. Negative/Positive comments please.
