What can I do to put these pages back in the top results?
-
Hello here,
here is an interesting question for you. The following 2 webpages from our website have been ranking well on Google (usually on the 1st or 2nd page) for the past 12 years. They are among our oldest, highly relevant product pages on our site:
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Moonlight.html
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Eliza.html
And we could always find them with the keyword "moonlight sonata sheet music" or "fur elise sheet music". Now, since the last November these pages don't show up anymore despite they are still present in the index.
It is pretty hard to understand why those pages don't show up in the search results for those keywords as they used to, above all if you consider that those are among our best, most popular and unique product pages!
But instead to struggle to understand why we lost presence (Panda? Some unknown sort of penalization?), has anyone any suggestions to help us to have those pages back in the top results? What do you suggest to do in such kind of cases?
Any ideas and thoughts are very welcome!
Thank you in advance.

Peter, I have added a new editorial review on the page:
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Moonlight.html
Also, by looking again to your suggested http://www.origenmusic.com/free-piano-music.html, that page is quite different from ours and it is not dedicated solely to that specific title (Moonlight Sonata). So, I don't think the possible "duplicate "issue may be the real problem (not for that specific URL at least).
Any more thoughts? Someone else? Pretty desperate to understand what happened on those pages to drop so much in rankings!

Thank you Peter, that's exactly what I though... maybe Google got confused about the fact I am the "original" content compared with our own affiliate's. I will try that, but I still can't find a clear explanation of such a penalization.

Thank you Mememax for your response.
Here are my answers to your points:
1. I don't recall any change since September for all of our product pages that could have caused this issue. What we have worked in the past month for product pages is:
a. Adding markup code for rich snippets.
b. Applied rel-canonical to all tabs of our product pages (see point 2 below).
Of course back links could be an issue with the fact we have hundreds of affiliates linking back to our product pages, but I thought Google is enough smart to understand that (any link has inside the "af=" parameter). Maybe adding a "rel=nofollow" tag would help, but it is hard to control that from our side. But I have never worked on "link building" (all links are natural with the only exception of affiliate's).
2. As for the tabs, as I wrote above, I have consolidated product page tabs via rel-canonical.
3. The image well indexed in Google is still there, on the INFO tab (the default product page). Is that what you meant?
Thank you again!

Add a paragraph or two of fresh content, state what the item is in new terms, try differentiating more from Origenmusic.
From here: http://www.origenmusic.com/free-piano-music.html, origenmusic links to virtualsheetmusic; maybe Google is thinking the origenmusic page is the original and the virtualsheetmusic page just contains a subset of the same information without adding anything else for the user?

Hi Fablau, I'm still seeing you first with both your keywords, but in the google image results. It shows the first page of the sonata while the link to your html seems down to the 9th and 13th page.
It's strange to see such old and good pages (it seems they got high authority) going so down in the serps. A couple of things:
- have you done something since the change? Like affiliate promotion or heavy linkbuilding? I'm seeing 11 domains linking to the beethoven page but ~5k links. Many of them are from origenmusic.com it seems like they' linking a lot to that page. An affiliate? Maybe you can explain more but seeing so many links from few domains, seems the kind of things google doesn't like so much these days. In november I remember a couple of panda updates with one of them being quite aggressive.
- I'm seeing you having many tabs which are also different urls. Why not consolidate all those pages into the same one maybe using ajax to load the content so all the value remains in one page?
- Include your images in your pages, it seems that google like it since you're still ranking first with that, maybe you can use that value including that image into your main pages.
Hope that helps!

External 404 pages
A client of mine is linking to a third-party vendor from their main site. The page being linked to loads with a Page Not Found error and then replaces some application content once the Javascript kicks in. This process is not visible to users (the application loads fine for front-end users) but it is being picked up as a 404 error in broken link reports. This link is part of the site skin so it's on every page. Outside of the annoyance of having lots of 404 errors being flagged in a broken link report, does this cause any actual issue? Eg, do search enginges see that my client is linking to something that is a 404 error, and does that cause them any harm?

Few pages without SSL
Hi, A website is not fully secured with a SSL certificate.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AdenaSEO
Approx 97% of the pages on the website are secured. A few pages are unfortunately not secured with a SSL certificate, because otherwise some functions on those pages do not work. It's a website where you can play online games. These games do not work with an SSL connection. Is there anything we have to consider or optimize?
Because, for example when we click on the secure lock icon in the browser, the following notice.
Your connection to this site is not fully secured Can this harm the Google ranking? Regards,

Moving site to new domain without access to redirect from old to new. How can I do this with as little loss to SERP results as possible?
I've been hired to build a new site for a customer. They were duped by some shady characters at goglupe.com (If you can reach them, tell them they are rats--phone is disconnected, address is a comedy club on Mission in SF). Glupe owns the domain name and would not transfer or give FTP access prior to dropping off the face of the earth. The customer doesn't want to chase after them with lawyers, so we are moving on. New domain, new site with much of the same content as previous site. All that I have access to is the old wordpress site. I plan to build the new site, then remove all pages/posts from the old site. Is there anything I can do to salvage the current page 1 ranking? Obviously, the new domain will take some time to get back there. Just hoping to avoid any pitfalls or penalties if I can. If I had complete access, I would follow all the standard guidelines. But I don't. Any thoughts? Thanks! Chris

Help with duplicate pages
Hi there, I have a client who's site I am currently reviewing prior to a SEO campaign. They still work with the development team who built the site (not my company). I have discovered 311 instances of duplicate content within the crawl report. The duplicate content appears to either be 1, 2, or 3 versions of the same pages but with differing URL's. Example: http://www.sitename.com http://sitename.com http://sitename.com/index.php And other pages follow a similar or same pattern. I suppose my question is mainly what could be causing this and how can I fix it? Or, is it something that will have to be fixed by the website developers? Thanks in advance Darren

On-page optimization - Am I doing it well?
Hi Mozzers, I'm sitting here going through our site and optimizing all of our content.

For the most part we've just written without correct keyword research, so the content lacks focus. Here is a page I would consider finished - http://www.consumerbase.com/international-mailing-lists.html I have our KWs in the: URL Title Tag Meta Description Bolded in Content Image Alt Attribute. If I optimize my other pages like this, will I be good?
It feels a tiny bit stuffed to me, but SEOmoz's on-page tool gives me glowing numbers. Thanks!0 -
How can I tell which website pages are hosted on the root domain vs the www subdomain?
One of the SEOmoz help desk professionals told me this today regarding some of my website pages. "it looks like you have pages hosted as separate pages on both the root domain and the www subdomain, which means that these pages are competing for rankings and authority. You may want to consider a 301 redirect or the use of rel=canonical tags.". Can anyone help me understand this? How can I tell which pages are which?

Privacy policy page
I only link to my privacy policy page from the homepage, but the privacy policy page has a pr4, while the main domain has a pr5. Using site:domain name the policy page is at the top of the 2nd page of google so it ranks high. I was thinking of either nofollowing the link or adding a (noindex, follow) directive on the policy page, until I saw some seo professional sites using rel=canonical on their policy pages that points to their policy page itself. Am I better off using the (noindex, follow) or rel=canonical = policy page ? thanks
