How to Fix Duplicate Page Content?

Our latest SEOmoz crawl reports 1138 instances of "duplicate page content."
I have long been aware that our duplicate page content is likely a major reason Google has de-valued our Web store.
Our duplicate page content is the result of the following:
1. We sell audio books and use the publisher's description (narrative) of the title. Google is likely recognizing the publisher as the owner / author of the description and our description as duplicate content.
2. Many audio book titles are published in more than one format (abridged, unabridged CD, and/or unabridged MP3) by the same publisher so the basic description on our site would be the same at our Web store for each format = more duplicate content at our Web store.
Here's are two examples (one abridged, one unabridged) of one title at our Web store.
How much would the body content of one of the above pages have to change so that a SEOmoz crawl does NOT say the content is duplicate?

Just wanted to add a note that our tools do not detect duplicates across domains or on other websites, so these warnings are completely tied to your own pages/URLs.
These are "near" duplicates in our view, and Takeshi is right - there are many possible solutions. I'm guessing you can't directly combine them, from an e-commerce standpoint, but I would suggest either making a "parent" page and using rel=canonical, or just making sure there's navigation between the formats/versions and then pointing rel=canonical to the most common version (i.e. that your customers buy).
Technically, this will remove one version from ranking consideration, but I think that's preferable to having 100s or 1000s of versions out there and diluting your ranking ability or even having Panda-related problems. It's one thing if you have Amazon's link profile, but the rest of us aren't so lucky.

Good question. The canonical tag may be part of our solution.
I am also planning on having a "main" product with the description and any variations (abridged, unabridged, CD, MP3 CD) as subproducts which would use the main products' description. I.E. There would only be one product page with the description, not multiple. This will still result in our main products' page having the same description as the publisher. We have 1000s of audio products. Paying someone or doing it ourselves to create enough unique content on these pages would be prohibitive. Some high ranking competitors of ours have the same description as the publisher so Google must be taking something else into consideration to value them much higher than us.

They are saying the pages on your site have duplicate content. Those two pages you linked are a perfect example. The content is exactly the same minus two words, which is more than enough for Google to register it as duplicate..
What I don't understand is what's wrong with a simple canonical tag in this instance? Do you really need both of these indexed?

When SEOmoz identifies pages at our Web store with duplicate content is SEOmoz saying one of both of the following:
1. More than one page at our Web store has the same content.
2. One or more pages at our Web store has the same content as another page on the Web.

Agreed with everything Takeshi just said, but only left out one thing. Once you combine pages, make sure to 301 redirect the old pages to the new url. If you don't want to combine remember to use rel=canonical to delineate which type of permalink has the authority.

There are no easy fixes here. Here are a few things that are common practice among etailers to reduce duplicate content:
- Combine similar pages into one. So abridged & unabridged would be on one page, with a drop-down menu to select the different versions of the product.
- Re-write the product descriptions, from scratch (you can hire people to do this).
- Add your own unique content in addition to the provided description, such editorial reviews, recommendations, historical information, product specs, etc.
- Add user reviews, so that users can generate unique content for you.
- Create a unique user experience that improves the shopping experience on your site. Why should a user shop at your store, and not Amazon? Why should Google rank your site above Amazon? What differentiates you?
Like I said, there are no quick fixes for unique content. You either have to re-write the descriptions, add your own unique content, or both.

Big retailers and duplicate content
Hello there! I was wondering if you guys have experience with big retailers sites fetching data via API (PDP content etc.) from another domain which is also sharing the same data with other multiple sites. If each retailer has thousands on products, optimizing PDP content (even in batches) is quite of a cumbersome task and rel="canonical" pointing to original domain will dilute the value. Penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
Is it possible to get a penalty for duplicate content on the same website? I have a old custom-built site with a large number of filters that are pre-generated for speed. Basically the only difference is the meta title and H1 tag, with a few text differences here and there. Obviously I could no-follow all the filter links but it would take an enormous amount of work. The site is performing well in the search. I'm trying to decide whether if there is a risk of a penalty, if not I'm loath to do anything in case it causes other issues.

Website Redesign - Duplicate Content?
I hired a company to redesign our website.there are many pages like the example below that we are downsizing content by 80%.(believe me, not my decision)Current page: https://servicechampions.com/air-conditioning/New page (on test server):https://servicechampions.mymwpdesign.com/air-conditioning/My question to you is, that 80% of content that i am losing in the redesign, can i republish it as a blog?I know that google has it indexed. How do we avoid duplicate/thin content on +150,000 product pages?
Hey guys! We got a rather large product range (books) on our eCommerce site (+150,000 titles). We get book descriptions as meta data from our publishers, which we display on the product pages. This obviously is not unique, as many other sites display the same piece of description of the book. It is important for us to rank on those book titles, so my question to You is: How would you go about it? I mean, it seems like a rather unrealistic task to paraphrase +150,000 (and growing) book descriptions. As I see it, there are these options: 1. Don't display the descriptions on the product pages (however then those pages will get even thinner!)

2. Display the (duplicate) descriptions, but put no-index on those product pages in order not to punish the rest of the site (not really an option, though).
3. Hire student workers to produce unique product descriptions for all 150,000 products (seems like a huge and expensive task) But how would You solve such a challenge?

Duplicate page content on numerical blog pages?
Hello everyone, I'm still relatively new at SEO and am still trying my best to learn. However, I have this persistent issue. My site is on WordPress and all of my blog pages e.g page one, page two etc are all coming up as duplicate content. Does Google View "SRC", "HREF", TITLE and Alt tags as Duplicate Content on Home Page Slider?
Greetings MOZ Community. A keyword matrix was developed by my SEO firm. I am in the process of integrating primary, secondary and terciary phrases into the text and am also sprinkling three or four other terms. Using a keyword density tool (http://www.webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php) the results were somewhat unexpected after I optimized. So I then looked at the source code and noticed text from HREF, ALT and SRC tags that may be effecting how Google would interpret text on the page. Our home page (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) contains a slider with commercial real estate listings. Would Google index the SRC, HREF, TITLE and ALT tags in these slider items? Would this be detrimental to SEO? Is this duplicate content?
My client has several articles and pages that have 2 different URLs For example: /bc-blazes-construction-trail is the same article as: /article.cfm?intDocID=22572 I was not sure if this was duplicate content or not ... Or if I should be putting "/article.cfm" into the robots.txt file or not.. if anyone could help me out, that would be awesome! Thanks 🙂

"Duplicate" Page Titles and Content
Hi All, This is a rather lengthy one, so please bear with me! SEOmoz has recently crawled 10,000 webpages from my site, FrenchEntree, and has returned 8,000 errors of duplicate page content. The main reason I have so many is because of the directories I have on site. The site is broken down into 2 levels of hierachy. "Weblets" and "Articles". A weblet is a landing page, and articles are created within these weblets. Weblets can hold any number of articles - 0 - 1,000,000 (in theory) and an article must be assigned to a weblet in order for it to work. Here's how it roughly looks in URL form - http://www.mysite.com/[weblet]/[articleID]/ Now; our directory results pages are weblets with standard content in the left and right hand columns, but the information in the middle column is pulled in from our directory database following a user query. This happens by adding the query string to the end of the URL. We have 3 main directory databases, but perhaps around 100 weblets promoting various 'canned' queries that users may want to navigate straight into. However, any one of the 100 directory promoting weblets could return any query from the parent directory database with the correct query string. The problem with this method (as pointed out by the 8,000 errors) is that each possible permutation of search is considered to be it's own URL, and therefore, it's own page. The example I will use is the first alphabetically. "Activity Holidays in France": http://www.frenchentree.com/activity-holidays-france/ - This link shows you a results weblet without the query at the end, and therefore only displays the left and right hand columns as populated. http://www.frenchentree.com/activity-holidays-france/home.asp?CategoryFilter= - This link shows you the same weblet with the an 'open' query on the end. I.e. display all results from this database. Listings are displayed in the middle. There are around 500 different URL permutations for this weblet alone when you take into account the various categories and cities a user may want to search in. What I'd like to do is to prevent SEOmoz (and therefore search engines) from counting each individual query permutation as a unique page, without harming the visibility that the directory results received in SERPs. We often appear in the top 5 for quite competitive keywords and we'd like it to stay that way. I also wouldn't want the search engine results to only display (and therefore direct the user through to) an empty weblet by some sort of robot exclusion or canonical classification. Does anyone have any advice on how best to remove the "duplication" problem, whilst keeping the search visibility? All advice welcome. Thanks Matt
