Intuit's Homestead web developer
-
I used Intuit's homestead to develop my website and when I analyze my site on semoz, I get duplicate page content between the site and the "index". Is this something to worry about and can I fix it if it is? Thanks.

Thank you and yes, you were spot on in your analysis. I will give your paln "B" a shot in that the htaccess file is unavailable as far as I can tell. I am a small CPA firm and luckily picked up the domain name ATLANTACPAS.COM for $2,500. In that I am already analytical, I have chosen to learn SEO and do it myself. Any feedback through this forum is greatly appreciated.
On thing I found interesting is that SEOMOZ has not updated there "Beginner's guide" to address the new Penguin algorithums. I would think that would be of key importance.
I will

O man wow, I haven't heard of Homestead in a very long time. Flash back to early 2000 for me
Okay your duplicate tag...
I assume you are seeing:
yoursite.com & yoursite.com/index as duplicate, Yes?
If this is the case you do want to fix this. Search engines can / may ding you for serving the same exact content on 2 different URLS.
The best way would be with a .htaccess 301 redirect which would redirect any call to index.html (.php) / .asp whatever extension you have to www.yoursite.com/
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^./index.php
RewriteRule ^(.)index.php$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]You may not have access to the an .htaccess file (linux / unix servers) in such case your next best bet would be to add a rel canonical tag in the section of your site like so..
Hope it helps

Question on Google's Site: Search
A client currently has two domains with the same content on each. When I pull up a Cached version of the site, I noticed that it has a Cache of the correct page on it. However, when I do a site: in Google, I am seeing the domain that we don't want Google indexing. Is this a problem? There is no canonical tag and I'm not sure how Google knows to cache the correct website but it does. I'm assuming they have this set in webmaster tools? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Why is robots.txt blocking URL's in sitemap?
Hi Folks, Any ideas why Google Webmaster Tools is indicating that my robots.txt is blocking URL's linked in my sitemap.xml, when in fact it isn't? I have checked the current robots.txt declarations and they are fine and I've also tested it in the 'robots.txt Tester' tool, which indicates for the URL's it's suggesting are blocked in the sitemap, in fact work fine. Is this a temporary issue that will be resolved over a few days or should I be concerned. I have recently removed the declaration from the robots.txt that would have been blocking them and then uploaded a new updated sitemap.xml. I'm assuming this issue is due to some sort of crossover. Thanks Gaz

Amazon Product Descriptions and our website's product descriptions
I am updating our product descriptions site-wide. I wanted to also update our amazon listings for those same products. Is that considered duplicate content if it would be on amazon and our site? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do that? Is google product ads also a problem?

Product landing page URL's for e-commerce sites - best practices?
Hi all I have built many e-commerce websites over the years and with each one, I learn something new and apply to the next site and so on. Lets call it continuous review and improvement! I have always structured my URL's to the product landing pages as such: mydomain.com/top-category => mydomain.com/top-category/sub-category => mydomain.com/top-category/sub-category/product-name Now this has always worked fine for me but I see more an more of the following happening: mydomain.com/top-category => mydomain.com/top-category/sub-category => mydomain.com/product-name Now I have read many believe that the longer the URL, the less SEO impact it may have and other comments saying it is better to have the just the product URL on the final page and leave out the categories for one reason or another. I could probably spend days looking around the internet for peoples opinions so I thought I would ask on SEOmoz and see what other people tend to use and maybe establish the reasons for your choices? One of the main reasons I include the categories within my final URL to the product is simply to detect if a product name exists in multiple categories on the site - I need to show the correct product to the user. I have built sites which actually have the same product name (created by the author) in multiple areas of the site but they are actually different products, not duplicate content. I therefore cannot see a way around not having the categories in the URL to help detect which product we want to show to the user. Any thoughts?

Unnatural Link Warning Removed - WMT's
Hi, just a quick one. We had an unnatural link warning for one of our test sites, the message appeared on the WMT's dashboard. The message is no longer there, has it simply expired or could this mean that Google no longer sees an unatural backlink profile? Hoping it's the latter but doubtful as we haven't tried to remove any links.. as I say it's just a test site. Thanks in advance!
