Using WP All Import csv import plugin for wordpress to daily update products on large ecommerce site. Category naming and other issues.
-
We have just got an automated solution working to upload about 4000 products daily to our site. We get a CSV file from the wholesalers server each day and the way they have named products and categories is not ideal.
Although most of the products remain the same (don't need to be over written)
Some will go out of stock or prices may change etc.
Problem is we have no control over the csv file so we need to keep the catagories they have given us. Might be able to create new catgories and have products listed under multiple categories?
If anyone has used wp all import or has knoledge in this area please let me know. I have plenty more questions but this should start the ball rolling!
Thanks in advance mozzers

Hey Guys thanks for the help Yes I am using woocomerce.
The import is all set up and runs all by it''s self using cron
The problem is the category field in csv cant be changed (at least not by the wholesaler ) so we would need to write some code to make that happen.
I might try adding some new categories and and still keep the old ones (otherwise) wordpress/woocommerce wouldnt know where to put the products.

This may be the best a choice for e-commerce on WordPress as far as hosting goes so much you get tons of high quality perks plus outstanding private cloud hosting along with it being backed by rack space, but meant for WordPress only. For e-commerce you can't go wrong with Zippy kid
https://www.zippykid.com comes with a free Cdn along with the new SPDY protocol to make using SSL Certs lightning fast
You might just need an import tool like this
http://www.woothemes.com/products/sequential-order-numbers-pro/
This controls inventory, customers, orders and ties into the Financials
http://demo.storeapps.org/wp-admin/admin.php?page=smart-manager-woo-demo
http://docs.woothemes.com/document/woocommerce/
This does it all and ties into github a fantastic way to update your website constantly with this type of information managed WordPress posts that integrate with. github Zippy kid and WP engine. Each is fantastic

I think you can stop looking however and put away your spreadsheets if you can

I hope I have been of help,

are you using Woo commerce? I think you are trying to import the csv file like a website however I have no idea what you're actually doing.
Where are you importing it into what software plug-in?
There are better methods including ones that will check with an API determine if the price or stock has changed and update accordingly. woo Commerce is the best word press e-commerce software on the market in my opinion. It has a lot of plug-ins go to woothemes.com search for woo commerce and look at all of the plug-ins that offers.
I have done what you're talking about with another e-commerce website and it was fairly simple however it seems like you have more politics in play and they expect you to use what they have created.
I would need to play by play of software to software exactly what's occurring exactly what you're doing to import exactly what e-commerce plug-in you're using?
There's a lot of questions.
Sincerely,
Thomas

How does product category description affect SEO?
Hi - we are a website that sells tours. We have category pages that list the tours in that category (by city, by length of time, theme, etc). At the top of each category page, before the buttons linking to the tours, there is a category description. It is a pretty long paragraph. We are redesigning the website and think it would look nicer to show 2-3 lines of text and then have a down arrow and 'read' more so people can click and it would expand to show the full category description if they want to read it and it won't take up so much room that way. My question is - will this affect SEA at all? Or because the text is still there, just hidden, it won't do anything? Our site ranks very high in organic searches on google and we do not want to do anything that will hurt SEO. thanks.

My product category pages are not being indexed on google can someone help?
My website has been indexed on google and all of its pages can be found on google except for the product category pages - which are where we want our traffic heading to, so this is a big problem for us. Our website is www.skirtinguk.com And an example of a page that isn't being indexed is https://www.skirtinguk.com/product-category/mdf-skirting-board/

Will changing category URLs on site hurt SEO?
Hi Moz Community, We're looking to replace some URLs on our Wordpress site and I want to make sure we won't hurt our SEO with the changes. The site is lushpalm.com When we originally launched our site we created pages (which are linked to in our main menu) to essentially display our categories. We did this as a workaround because we didn’t like the URL to have the word “category” in it. Now we would like to make some changes and we want to make sure we’re not going to hurt our SEO in any way by accidentally duplicating content or otherwise. We want to fix our structure and now link to our category pages from our main menu, BUT we want to change the URL of the category page so that it doesn’t have “category” in it, essentially renaming it the name of the page currently linked to in our main menu. So basically, the category lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips, would be renamed with the URL lushpalm.com/surf-trips and the current page that is at lushpalm.com/surf-trips would be therefore replaced. My questions are: If we did this, would that mean that the previous “lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips” would cease to exist? Or is there some imprint of that out on the web? And if it is then would it re-direct to the new page? Would replacing the current page URL with a category hurt our current SEO in any way? Would this change cause any duplicate pages somehow? Thanks so much for your help!

Best way to "Prune" bad content from large sites?
I am in process of pruning my sites for low quality/thin content. The issue is that I have multiple sites with 40k + pages and need a more efficient way of finding the low quality content than looking at each page individually. Is there an ideal way to find the pages that are worth no indexing that will speed up the process but not potentially harm any valuable pages? Current plan of action is to pull data from analytics and if the url hasn't brought any traffic in the last 12 months then it is safe to assume it is a page that is not beneficial to the site. My concern is that some of these pages might have links pointing to them and I want to make sure we don't lose that link juice. But, assuming we just no index the pages we should still have the authority pass along...and in theory, the pages that haven't brought any traffic to the site in a year probably don't have much authority to begin with. Recommendations on best way to prune content on sites with hundreds of thousands of pages efficiently? Also, is there a benefit to no indexing the pages vs deleting them? What is the preferred method, and why?

Handling of product variations and colours in ecommerce
Hi, our site prams.net has 72.000 crawled and only 2500 indexed urls according to deep crawl mainly due to colour variations (each colour has its own urls now). We now created 1 page per product, eg http://www.prams.net/easywalker-mini and noindexed all the other ones, which had a positive effect on our seo. http://www.prams.net/catalogsearch/result/?q=002.030.059.0 I might still hurt our crawl budget a lot that we have so many noindexed pages. The idea is now to redirect 301 all the colour pages to this main page and make them invisible. So google do not have to crawl them anymore, we included the variations in the product pages, so they should still be searchable for google and the user. Does this make sense or is there a better solution out there? Does anyone have an idea if this will likely have a big or a small impact? Thanks in advance. Dieter

How to 301 redirect old wordpress category?
Hi All, In order to avoid duplication errors we've decided to redirect old categories (merge some categories).
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | BeytzNet
In the past we have been very generous with the number of categories we assigned each post. One category needs to be redirected back to blog home (removed completely) while a couple others should be merged. Afterwords we will re-categorize some of the old posts. What is the proper way to do so?
We are not technical, Is there a plugin that can assist? Thanks0 -
