Domain Change: Leave The Old Domain Homepage Up
-
We are going to be redesigning our website and switching to a new domain.
I think we will set up a permanent 301 redirect from each page of the old domain to a page on the new domain. We would like to leave the old domain homepage up with all content removed and have a link pointing to the new domain. Is there any SEO harm to leaving the old domain homepage up?
Thank you!
Jessie

In a recent statement (sorry, don't have the link to hand) Google's Matt Cutts indicated that 301-redirects pass the same amount of rank influence as a normal link does. So there'd be no benefit to using links instead of 301s anyway.

You absolutely want to redirect the entire old domain and all of its pages to the new site, Jessie. Under no circumstances is it a good idea to leave the old homepage or resource pages live.
If you were to do that, you would be splitting the authority between the two sites and neither one of them would be strong enough to rank well. (The split sites would also likely confuse your users.)
There's actually quite a bit of technical work to be done to implement this kind of domain change. Here's an extensive SEOMoz post on the steps to implement and monitor a domain migration. And here's a great migration checklist infographic. You're going to want to get as much of this right as possible, as there can be considerable risk when doing this kind of major change. And you'll want to have good monitoring in place so you catch and fix any problems/glitches that sneak through.
Hope that helps?
Paul
P.S. Just to be clear - if you "left the homepage up" but had a 301-redirect on it, nobody would ever see the old homepage anyway. They would be forwarded to the new page as if the old page didn't exist

Our thought was since the old domain has a lot of SEO credibility it would be good to keep a few resource pages that direct to the new domain. Is this incorrect thinking? Would it be better to let go of the old domain and permanently 301 redirect the whole website, passing 90%+ of the link juice to the new domain?
I agree that from the usability stand point that it would be better to permanent 301 redirect the old homepage to the new domain.

I find that 301s are not just good for SEO, but end users as well. I really find it so much neater when the people who own a website make sure that I get directed to where I was trying to go instead of leaving it up to me to click there. Remember that if you do it the way you mention that you're also giving users an option to click something you don't want them to: the close button!
-
What is your reasoning for wanting to do that?
Your homepage is your highest PR page so you should 301 redirect it to the new homepage and users will get to your site without having to click.

Any recent updates from Google or community on sub domains vs sub directories?
Hi all, This has been a debate for years and I have noticed most of the SEOs suggest to go or switch to sub directories instead of sub domains. Still is this the same or any new updates from Google or SEO community? We have moved a sub domain to sub directory last year. The result was sub directory content started ranking good; but no change in website rankings. Because of moving sub domains to sub directories, will the linkjuice/PR of the website gets diluted as the number of pages increases which will takeaway soe authority? Thanks

Do back-links to non indexed sub-domains / sub-directories considered by Google as website backlinks and pass Pagerank to website?
Hi, If some noindexed links on our website or sub-domain got some backlinks, will that backlinks pass Pagerank / linkjuice to website? Will they be considered as backlinks to website by Google? Here is a statement from Matt cutts for the question. My question is same as below with answer? Eric Enge: Can a NoIndex page accumulate PageRank? Matt Cutts: A NoIndex page can accumulate PageRank, because the links are still followed outwards from a NoIndex page. Thanks

Google has indexed some of our old posts. What took so long and will we lose rank for their brevity?
Hi, We just had a few of our old blog posts indexed by Google. There are short formed posts, and I want to make sure we're not going to get dinged by Google for their length. Can you advise?https://www.policygenius.com/blog/guaranteed-issue

Decline in traffic but no change in rankings
I'm comparing our best search traffic month in 2011 (March) with our current traffic (April)and have seen significant declines in traffic, despite no change in our rankings or even improved rankings for the same terms. Trying to sort out an explanation. We have been a white-hat SEO site since our inception over 10 years ago. Our SEO consultant doesn't think we've been affected by any algo changes, at least not to any significant degree. My only explanation for this possibly anomaly is: decrease in the use of the KW terms in search over time (how to determine?) generalized increase in PPC instead of organic search driving traffic possibility that Adv Web Rankings is no longer accurately collecting SERP rankings Does anyone have any other thoughts or considerations that might explain the decline in traffic, despite maintenance or improvement in rankings? Thanks.

New Algorithm changes
the real time news feed style in which we all use the internet these days. How do you think this new change is going to effect things ? “This is the result of them saying we need to find a way to more effectively get fresh content up,” said Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land and an industry expert. “It does help with the issue of people thinking, ‘Wow, if I need to find out about something breaking, I’ll go to Facebook or Twitter for that.’ ” Is google reacting to a massive loss of traffic volume from Facebook and Twitter ? I also ask the question would Facebook benifit from some form of built in search engine or would this never happen ??

How does an exact match domain.me rate for SEO
Anyone have any idea how an exactly matching keyword (using the "domain.me" register) will compare against an almost matching keyword in the Google .ie search engine. (assuming that on and off page SEO will be the same). eg, www.wigets.me against www.mywigets.ie Thanks

Today all of our internal pages all but completely disappeared from google search results. Many of them, which had been optimized for specific keywords, had high rankings. Did google change something?
We had optimized internal pages, targeting specific geographic markets. The pages used the keywords in the url title, the h1 tag, and within the content. They scored well using the SEOmoz tool and were increasing in rank every week. Then all of a sudden today, they disappeared. We had added a few links from textlink.com to test them out, but that's about the only change we made. The pages had a dynamic url, "?page=" that we were about to redirect to a static url but hadn't done it yet. The static url was redirecting to the dynamic url. Does anyone have any idea what happened? Thanks!
