Using a 302 re-direct from http://www to https://www to secure customer data
-
My website sends Customers from a http://www.mysite.com/features page to a https://www.mysite.com/register page which is an account sign-up form using a 302 re-direct.
Any page that collects customer data has an authenticated SSL certificate to protect any data on the site. Is this 302 the most appropriate way of doing this as the weekly crawl picks it up as being bad practise? Is there a better alternative?
-
Ah, ok got it, thanks. From an SEO perspective I definitely wouldn't worry about it since the link goes to a registration form and doesn't have any SEO value. You might even decide that its better to keep the page out of the index altogether (but again, I wouldn't spend much time on it). The better alternative for redirects is a 301 redirect on the old URL, and updating all your internal links with the new URL. If this was an important page I'd consider doing it, but for this page it would be last on my never-ending list of priorities.

Here is the link to our features page so you can see what I mean http://goo.gl/kD7T1
If you click on the 'Sign Up Now' button in the middle of the page, you move to a https:// page via a 302?
-
Ok, I still don't understand when the redirect happens. Does the /features page always redirect, or only when someone is not logged in?
-
It's the way it was set-up at the start, but I only recently discovered it. Now I'm trying to figure why it was done this way and the best way to resolve it.

Hi, why does the redirect happen? When someone clicks "register", why doesn't it just go directly to the secure page?

Www or no www
OK. Let's get the obvious out of the way. We all know to 301 www to root, or root to www. However, my questions for discussion is, which is better? Is it better to redirect the root to www or redirect the www to the root? I ask this from the context of links. Because, even though my client's sites are being redirected in the .htaccess file, I note different PA, DA, and link counts for www vs no www. It appears to me it doesn't seem to matter in the social signal arena. What I am thinking is that redirecting the root to www is better because humans naturally link with www, so you take advantage this natural aspect. Agree or disagree? Are there any other considerations to worry about? Thanks,

Guy P.S. My opinion is to call BS on link juice through 301s. It may help, but it is never as good as a link with no redirects.0 -
If I hired you/your company to do my SEO ...
If i hired you or your company to do SEO for my site (http://goo.gl/XUH3f) what would be the first steps you'd take? I'm pretty sure i've covered all of the basics myself, I'm just left trying to figure out what i should do next... rankings have been going up and down for the last few weeks, but even when they're up, they're not high enough 🙂 (and then they go back down anyway) ... I know some of you are going to say build links, please at least give me an example of one or two sites you'd try to get to link to mine... I'm open to any advice or feedback as I'm just a website owner who's been doing their own SEO & learning on the fly... Thanks a lot!

Using PushState for Meta Data?
Wondering if anyone has had any experience using pushstate to update meta data on a AJAX page. What we are trying to is have one really long page that users can scroll through to see different portfolio pieces. We want each portfolio piece to be represented in Google as a separate page when they are technically all on the same page. An example of how the page will work is here:

http://www.scozzese.com/2011/en/#annasafroncik If you notice you scroll down and the url will update for the next piece but you are still on the same page. So if we do this for meta title, meta description - will Google be able to recognize it? Any help to achieve quality results would be helpful! If I didn't explain anything clearly please let me know!0 -

Best way to handle old re-directs?
What happens if you go back and change old 301 re-directs? So instead of it re-directing from A to B then C, we write a new redirect for A to C. What does Google see this as next time it crawls the site?

What on-page/site optimization techniques can I utilize to improve this site (http://www.paradisus.com/)?
I use a Search Engine Spider Simulator to analyze the homepage and I think my client is using black hat tactics such as cloaking. Am I right? Any recommendations on to improve the top navigation under Resorts pull down. Each of the 6 resorts listed are all part of the Paradisus brand, but each resort has their own sub domain.

Link anchor text: only useful for pages linked to directly or distributed across site?
As a SEO I understand that link anchor text for the focus keyword on the page linked to is very important, but I have a question which I can not find the answer to in any books or blogs, namely: does inbound anchor text 'carry over' to other pages in your site, like linkjuice? For instance, if I have a homepage focusing on keyword X and a subpage (with internal links to it) focusing on keyword Y. Does is then help to link to the homepage with keyword Y anchor texts? Will this keyword thematically 'flow through' the internal link structure and help the subpage's ranking? In a broader sense: will a diverse link anchor text profile to your homepage help all other pages in your domain rank thematically? Or is link anchor text just useful for the direct page that is linked to? All views and experiences are welcome! Kind regards, Joost van Vught
