What next to help with my rankings
-
I'm after a fresh set of eyes and any suggestions to help me with my site on what next I should be doing to help increase rankings.
The site is: http://bit.ly/VR6xIm
Currently the site is ranking around 9-11th on google.co.uk for it's main term which is the name of the site. The site is around a year old, when it launched it went initially up towards positions 3-5 but has since settled at around where it is now.
I have a free tool webmasters can use to implement our speed test into their sites which also includes a link back to our site in it to recognise that we are providing the tool for free, I periodically change the link achor text so it is not always the same anchor text that every site uses.
Is there anything obvious I should be doing or that is missing that would help with my rankings?
*Just as a note, I am not after a review on the actual speed test on the site, a new one will be developed to help further increase accuracy.

The key is to make sure your website growth, authority and success is natural.
I have personally witnessed a client who has tried to "get to number one in Google" by rushing into activities of obtaining vast numbers of inbound links and ultimately they logged into GWT one day to see a nice message from Google notifying them of the suspicious activity.
Keep things simple. Start with fixing any errors within the HTML by running your site through the WC3 validator. I can see you have 8 errors on the homepage. Easily fixable. Then run your site the Y-Slow browser add-on. The page loading time is taken into consideration with search engines. You are currently getting a Grade C - see if you can improve this somewhat.
One thing at a time. Oh and remember, its no longer about "being number 1" so much now, its about measuring your goals and conversion rates and determining success that way. Stick some kind of track_pageview onto the "start test" button, then you can compare how many people visit your homepage and also compare how many actually ran the speed test system. The fact that the speed test is the main function of your site suggests you should see that the number of visitors to your homepage should not be too disimilar to the number of people who run the test. If there is a big difference, find out why. Good luck.
I got 9mb per second by the way.

Thanks for the reply Kriscons.
Yes the speedchescker sites is quite a bit older than mine and so has a lot more history, age and authority to it.
I'm guessing it's not just a case of trying to play "catch up" with links that will get me competing with them is it as I envisage that would be quite a mamouth task to do.
I'm not actually putting up a new site, I was saying that just the actual speedtest on there will be being developed (the site stays the same, the speed test just becomes a bit more accurate is all).

Hi Wardy
A quick check on opensiteexplorer comparing your site and the number 1 current ranking [<cite>broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk</cite>], the results show a huge difference in inbound links, page authority, domain authority and social activity to name a few.
You said so yourself that your domain is only 12 months old. Doing a quick search on Google.co.uk indicates that there are about 23,600,000 results for the search phrase "broadband speed test". Fairly saturated market but time will hopefully allow you to improve.
The fact that your site is at the number 10 position is not bad in my opinion for such a young domain. Get your new site uploaded with 301 redirects in place and review it after the new site is up and running.

Content Help for Dealers
What type of content would anyone recommend writing for power sports dealers (ATV dealers, Motorcycle Dealers, Jet Ski Dealers, etc) or outdoor power equipment dealers (tractors, lawn mowers, etc) when they're website consists mainly of inventory pages? These dealers are trying to improve brand awareness, but creating content that answers searchers' questions/intent is tough and I want to make sure I am on the right track. I'm trying to create unique content. I am optimizing existing pages and then so far I've been writing brand pages, describing the brands, advertising that they carry this brand, creating links and call-to-actions to the inventory pages, etc. I want to first create authority and crawlable content for this brand. From there, I have been trying to create product category pages, describing the top products under that brand and working to creating product comparison content instead of simply describing it. Why Buy type of stuff, but that gets tricky to make unique. Any suggestions on unique content or better strategies versus just brand descriptions, product descriptions/comparisons, etc? I also want to make sure that creating multiple pages focused on one brand and an overall category isn't cannibalization of a topic. Obviously each page is slightly different and gradually going into more detail, but I want to make sure. Any recommendations on types of content or different strategies would be helpful! Also - I should mention that I am limited by the platform. I cannot create/utilize a blog page or anything like that. Thanks!

Page Rank Worse After Optimization
For a long time, we had terrible on page SEO. No keyword targeting, no meta titles or descriptions. Just a brief 2-4 sentence product description and shipping information. Strangely, we weren't ranking too bad. For one product, we were ranking on page 1 of Google for a certain keyword. My goal to reach the top of page 1 would be easy (or so I thought). I have now optimized this page to rank better for the same keyword. I have a 276 word description with detailed specifications and shipping information. I have a strong title and meta description with keywords and modifers. I have also included a video demonstration, additional photos and an PDF of the owners manual. In my eyes, the page is 100% better than it ever was. In the eyes of MOZ, it's better also. I've got an A with the On-Page Grader. Why is this page now ranking on page 8 of Google? What have I done wrong? What can I do to correct it?

Blog Not Ranking Well at All in Search Engines, Need Help!
Hi Mozers, Need some help on a CMS I've been working with over the last year. The CMS is built by a team of guys here in Washington State. Basically, I'm having issues with clients content on the blog system not getting ranking correctly at all. Here's a few problems I've noticed: Could you confirm and scale these problems based upon being, "not a problem" "a problem" and "critical must fix" 1. The title tag is pulling from the title of the article which is also automatically generating a URL with underscores instead of dashes. Is having a duplicate URL, Title, and Title tag spammy looking to search engines? Are underscores on long URL's confusing google? Where shorter one's are fine (i.e. domain/i_pad/

(i.e.http://www.ductvacnw.com/blog/archives/2013/05/20/5_reasons_to_hire_a_professional_to_clean_your_air_ducts_and_vents), 2. The CMS is resolving all URL's with a canonical instead of a 301 redirect (I've told webmaster tools which preferred url should be indexed). Does using a canonical over a 301 redirect cause any confusion with Google? Is one better practice then the other? 3. The H1 tags on the blog pull from "blog category" instead of the title of the blog post. Is this is a problem? 4. The URl's are quite long with the added "archives/2013/05/20/5". Does this cause problems by pushing the main target keyword further away from the domain name? 5. I'm also noticing the blog post is actually not part of the breadcrumbs where we normally would expect that to populate after the blog category name, Problem? These are some of the things I've noticed and need clarification on. If you see anything else please let me know?0 -
Tumblr the next Squidoo?
What does SEO Moz think of all this SEO abuse that is happening on tumblr lately? I mean, it doesn't take much time to look around tumbler and realize pretty much every page looks like this: http://staff.tumblr.com/post/454906416/blackberry-app Below the post check out the "reblogged". With the correct settings in your tumblr profile, all you gotta do is click reblog on a couple tumblr pages and you get instant backlinks to your website from tumblr pages. Some examples from this page: aticards reblogged this from staff mymuffincorner reblogged this from staff contextual-links reblogged this from staff It's actually a followed link if you reblog. if you just 'like' you end up with a nofollowed link. Questions: Why is tumblr so blind to allow this to happen Surely google must be aware of this and devaluing links that come from tumblr posts? Thoughts? edit: 50 views and no responses. maybe my question isnt clear enough?

Rankings Dropped
Hello, I wonder if anyone can point us in the right direction. Our main domain name has got a good SEO profile the domain is 12 years old and we have some good reputable links. On the 7th of Jan our website dropped in the rankings from 3rd to 10th for one of our main keywords and from then onwards some of our other keywords have dropped. We have a lot of landing pages that target specific keywords which look like a template page but just with the content changed. Can anyone pin point what could of caused this problem or has anyone experienced this before and knows how to fix it. I personally think we have been hit by the panda. Thanks, Scott
