Client has blog and main site - current thoughts - how to consolidate?
-
So I have several clients who have been blogging for a few years on Blogger and self hosted WordPress. They also have their "main site" on a different URL. What is the current thinking on what to do with the content. The "main sites" could use a bit of a boost and I know the content would help so I know I can 3-1 redirect everything from the current blogs to a new home on the main site.
What I am thinking is to move most of the posts to the main site with redirects, but leave a few posts around perhaps a theme (and maybe writing a few more) and leaving that property up and "open for business" so the links from it have some value to the main site, we can get G-plus author attribution on several sites in their topic of experience and maybe we can get some extra pages to rank in top 7. Does this seem like a reasonable strategy?

Thanks so much Thomas for your thoughts. I definitely don't want to have duplicate content. I guess what I am still wondering is this. One of the sites is a church and they have their own website in our town. The pastor for the church has been posting his sermons and blogging on blogger. So we are going to move them from blogger to wordpress (big fan here too) and I was just going to redirect everything and in effect shut the blogger site down but what I am wondering now is if it makes sense to leave some remnants of the blogger site behind (beyond just the redirected urls). Maybe we shoud eave a few posts that only appear on blogger so that perhaps we can get an occasional extra spot near the top of the serps for some keywords. I would also not be surprised if having a verifiable history of authorship on blogger that goes back a ways further than any imported page would be factored in by google when looking at the author's authority on the topic (i.e. in this case religion and my home town). Also, having authorship on two different domains would show diversity and help as well.

You want to redirect from another blog and have it rank on your new blog? keeping both blogs up at the same time? Unfortunately, that will not work. You'll have duplicate content and Google will penalize you because you will be linking to yourself.
do you want to take existing content on the web being used as a blog on somebody else's website and 301 redirect it from the current blog to a secular site?
Well if I'm hearing you correctly. I do think you're saying you own all this content or these clients want you to do this?
If you have content on 3 different sites that you have access to. That you no longer need. I would buy a WordPress template that has a blog and it already. Build the entire website that you are planning on building out of Word press then you will have to follow migration rules in order to get the content on their correctly. You could do 301 redirects and no database swaps. However you will have to of course take down the content that Already exists. you want to go into Google Webmaster tools and let them know you're making this change. As long as it's relevant content. I do not see the harm and it. If it is not relevant, or it is not yours don't do that of course.
I hope I have been of help,
Thomas
PS if you are already using a website that has a blog. WordPress preferably in my opinion but I guess you can use blogger. I would go about redirecting only relevant content if it's not relevant or if it's not yours to redirect don't touch it.

Redirecting external blog to main website blog - two questions I'm struggling with
Hiya Mozzers - I have a blog separate from main website which is duplicating the blog on the main website. This separate blog is duplicating the main website blog, so it needs to be closed down and redirected. There are some 200 pages of separate blog (identified via Screaming Frog). So I am suggesting the blog pages should be 301 redirected from the separate blog to the equivalent blog pages on the main website. Q1) Should the root domain of the separate blog be 301 redirected to the main www.mainwebsite.com/blog page, or to the root domain of the main website? Q2) Should the blog pages, which lack equivalent content on the main website, be 301 redirected to the main www.mainwebsite.com/blog page, or to the root domain of the main website? Thanks for your help on this one, Luke

Troubled QA Platform - Site Map vs Site Structure
I'm running a Q&A forum that was built prioritizing UX over SEO. This decision has cause a bit of a headache as we're 6 months into the project with 2278 Q&A pages with extremely minimal traffic coming from search engines. The structure has the following hiccups: A. The category navigation from the main Q&A page is entirely javascript and only navigable by users. B. We identify Google bots and send them to another version of the Q&A platform w/o javascript. Category links don't exist in this google bot version of the main Q&A page. On this Google version of the main Q&A page, the Pinterest-like tiles displaying individual Q&As are capped at 10. This means that the only way google bot can identify link juice being passed down to individual QAs (after we've directed them to this page) is through 10 random Q&As. C. All 2278 of the QAs are currently indexed in search. They are just indexed very very poorly in SERPs. My personal assumption, is that Google can't pass link juice to any of the Q&As (poor SERP) but registers them from the site map so it gets included in Google's index. My dilemma has me struggling between two different decisions: 1. Update the navigation in the header to remove the javascript and fundamentally change the look and feel of the Q&A platform. This will allow Google bot to navigate through Expert category links to pass link juice to all Q&As. or 2. Update the redirected main Q&A page to include hard coded category links with 100s of hard coded Q&As under each category page. Make it similar, ugly, flat and efficient for the crawling bots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to find a solution as soon as possible.

Will an inbound follow link on a site be devalued by an inbound affiliate link on the same site?
Hey guys, quick question I didn't find an answer to online. Scenario: 1. Site A links to Site B. It's a natural, regular, follow-link 2. Site A joins Site B's affiliate program, and adds an affiliate link Question: Does the first, regular follow link get devalued by the second affiliate link? Cheers!

My site still out of rank
Hello, I am working on a site for past 3 months, here are the problems with this site, 1. It had a forum full of spam becuase initially captcha was not included, 10000 spam backlinks 2. Affiliate page was also hit by spam about 4000 spam backlinks which were either not existing or porn etc.... 3. Too many internal links which were indexed, these additional links were generated due to tags, ids, filters etc. Existing SEO team decided to remove the forum and after 30 days they blocked it in robots. But within 30 days the site moved from 3rd page to no where. Now after few days lator internal links are also cleaned by putting following in the robots, Dissallow: / *? Dissallow: / *id Dissallow: / *tag Links are now cleaning up, all the spam and bad links are now put into disavow file and sent to google via disavow tool. On daily bases good quality links are been produced such as through content, article submission, profile linking, Bookmarks etc. The site is still not any where on top 50 results. The impressions are decreasing, traffic also do not rise as much. How do you see all this situation. What do you suggest and how long do you think it will take to return to top 10 when good linking is being done and all preventive measures are being taken. I would appreciate any feedback on it. Thank you. Site URL: http://www.creativethemes.net keywords: magento themes, magento templates

Redirecting Existing Domains to My Main Site
Hi I have a main property related website featuring different countries around the world. I also have many different seperate country websites 20+. All keyword rich domains with a good 9 years+ domain age and PR3's with decent links and moz rankings and unique content. Many of the sites are very low Alexa rank now and receive little traffic. I don't have the time now to spend on each of the individual domains and am wanting to consolidate them and their PR juice to the corresponding country page of my main website. My question is - is it possible - will google see this as me trying to manipulate them and is my main site likely to suffer from any penalties or downgrading? Thanks for your input.

Has my site been penalized?
Our site was listed on the first page for the phrase Active SEO on Google.co.uk. We suddenly find ourselves on page 4 overnight and we're not sure what's going on. We have not undertaken an Black hat techniques however the site is fairly new. Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?
