Do we need breadcrumbs?
-
I found myself in a weird position today having to defend the use of breadcrumbs.... This is what I wrote....
From an SEO point of view it is best practice to have breadcrumbs as they are high up in the code and help the search engines crawling the site. Do you need a breadcrumb for SEO – Yes – as well as from a usability point of you view users can navigate a breadcrumb instead of hitting the back button.
What would you have said?
-
Hi h2o2, maybe the phrasing wasnt clear but I think you misunderstood:
"For bigger sites especially I really wouldnt advise not using breadcrumbs."
-
@ Andy Mackean
Hi Andy, Do you mind elaborating on why could breadcrumbs negatively impact for spreading your link juice if you have a large site?
-
Breadcrumbs are a great way for engines to understand how your site is structured and to pass link juice logically and evenly to the places you want it. For bigger sites especially I really wouldnt advise not using breadcrumbs.
-
Yeah I think your list is looking good
Enhances ability for search engines to crawl the site.
Potential for Breadcrumb to appear in SERPs thus enhancing your listing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmOjX5DlN2A
Usability - users tend to attempt using a breadcrumb for navigation
Usability - users find it easier to understand how the site is built and how the navigation works
More pages are likely to be viewed by customers as breadcrumbs provide easy access to similar and alternate products
Successful popular sites such as Amazon use breadcrumbs alongside other navigation to help customers.
You might want to point out that you can make the font size and font colour subtle so it is clearly visible to users but doesn't impact on design and maybe send a screen shot with a few examples?

Hi Matt,
Pondering how to rephrase into bullet points the key factors to engage with him about. Simple straight forward layman's English to why bullet points are needed.
So far :-

You are right not all sites indexed with breadcrumbs show breadcrumbs in the SERPs - here is Matt Cutts take on this which might be useful for you

I would put together an example of a few top preforming sites that are leading the way in e-commerce that have breadcrumbs in order to support your argument. It is hard to comment on whether your site looks good. Your client must remember that a good looking design is important but not at the sacrifice of usability else your customers will soon go else were as you will find it is all about how quickly and easily they can access the information they are looking for. If any parts of your design hinder this you will soon know about it...
Is the site not likely to preform as well in the SERPs - well Google has integrated them for a reason - improving their search results. On a very basic level you will have more information against your listing - including extra links so this is likely to aid the user and encourage them to click on your result.
Breadcrumbs are essentially a form of rich snippet and they add value to your listing -

Also one other thing is that breadcrumbs don't have to be in a massive bright font from a design point of view. A smaller grey font in a white space above the product(s) can work just as well and get listed. If you do a search for products you will see some well known sites use this tact..

Not all pages indexed in google with breadcrumbs show the breadcrumb in the results. How does google decide which sites to show breadcrumbs on and which not to.
Is the site lightly to not perform as well in search engines without breadcrumbs? The client does not seem to be thinking about usability - he is more concerned that he thinks it looks good....
-
I would have said that breadcrumbs are a positive as they show the user the exact location of the product they are looking at and give them an easy trail to find similar/alternative products. The other areas of navigation in close proximity only show one level (presuming your client means nav menu etc?). Then I would also say that some of the most successful websites such as Amazon still use breadcrumbs in order to help customers from a usability point of view. From a search engine point of view; Google actually displays the breadcrumbs in the search results giving you more links in each search listing, which is a positive thing. Breadcrumbs in search results is likely to help increase click-through as the person searching might not be after the exact result listed but they can see you have a category for those products, so they can click straight through and see if you have exactly what they are looking for.
It must also be remembered that product pages can be accessed a number of different ways - search on site, search off site, links from other sites, through the navigation menu and so on. Therefore a clear trail for the user will help them locate other similar products and make it easier to navigate and engage with the website, meaning higher average pageviews and a lower bounce rate...

Need a layman's definition/analogy of the difference between schema and structured data
I'm currently writing a blog post about schema. However I want to set the record straight that schema is not exactly the same as structured data, although both are often used interchangeably. I understand this schema.org is a vocabulary of global identifiers for properties and things. Structured data is what Google officially stated as "a standard way to annotate your content so machines can understand it..." Does anybody know of a good analogy to compare the two? Thanks!

Monthly Refreshes Aren't Actually Needed, Right?
We get tons of emails from Network Solutions with the following text: To ensure that your website is easily found online it is important that you submit your website to the major search engines and internet directories, including: | Google™ Google Places™ Google Mobile™ Bing™ Yahoo!® Twitter® | Facebook® CitySearch® Foursquare™ Angie's List® GPS navigation MerchantCircle® | To do so, we recommend you go to each search engine and internet directories web page, locate the instructions and then complete a monthly refresh of your listing. If you would like us to complete this process for you please call us at... Everything I've ever read about modern SEO says this isn't necessary and it's just a solicitation to get people to pay them for something they don't even need. We update our social pages regularly and maintain listings on many citation sites using Moz Local (in addition to manually building citations). Can you guys confirm that this is just more spam from Network Solutions?

A/B Split Testing - Rankings Drop? Need an expert opinion...
We are running an A/B split test (Started on 12/12), and a few days after we started the test, we fell from position 9/10 (about 3 weeks on page 1) to position 11/13, and we've been there ever since. We are still running the test. We disallowed the test page in robots.txt, but that's all. no canonical no noindex

-no Google Experiments code. Theoretically, Google could crawl the site, and find the page, but then the page is disallowed. The alternate page is not indexed. Could this explain the rankings drop?1 -
Do XML sitemaps need to be manually resubmitted every time they are changed?
I have been noticing lately that quite a few of my client's sites are showing sitemap errors/warnings in Google webmaster tools, despite the fact that the issue with the the sitemap (e.g a URL that we have blocked in robots.txt) was fixed several months earlier. Google talks about resubmitting sitemaps here where it says you can resubmit your sitemap when you have made changes to it, I just find it somewhat strange that the sitemap is not automatically re-scanned when Google crawls a website. Does anyone know if the sitemap is automatically rescanned and only webmaster tools is not updated, or am I going to have to manually resubmit or ping Google with the sitemap each time a change is made? It would be interesting to know other people's experiences with this 🙂

Advice needed on how to handle alleged duplicate content and titles
Hi I wonder if anyone can advise on something that's got me scratching my head. The following are examples of urls which are deemed to have duplicate content and title tags. This causes around 8000 errors, which (for the most part) are valid urls because they provide different views on market data. e.g. #1 is the summary, while #2 is 'Holdings and Sector weightings'. #3 is odd because it's crawling the anchored link. I didn't think hashes were crawled? I'd like some advice on how best to handle these, because, really they're just queries against a master url and I'd like to remove the noise around duplicate errors so that I can focus on some other true duplicate url issues we have. Here's some example urls on the same page which are deemed as duplicates. 1) http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Holdings-and-sectors-weighting?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE&widgets=1 What's the best way to handle this?

Need help/insights. Site SEO = OK, Authority BLs = OK, Rank page #1\. How to reach pos #1?
Hi there! Some doubts are confusing my head and need some assistence from you to get on the right track. I'll explain my situation and want to hear from you what do you really recommend for med/long term permanent results. 1 - I have a PR2 (.com.br) domain; 2 - I'm talking about little/med competition micro-niche keywords; 3 - I got all pages I want to, indexed (I have a well SEO constructed website with internal link building); 4 - If a keyword has average competition, I'll already start ranking in page #3 on the SERP's; For a few low competition keywords I start on page #1; 5 - I do a little whitehat link building, 1 or 2 backlinks on authority sites and then like 15 days later I came to page #1, generally on position 9/10; And then I got stucked 🙂 No more authority sites where I can get backlinks... I do some posts on the company twitter/facebook page's, but they are no follow, so I don't really now if this can help. (never see a SERP result). I did some "blackhat" stuff to see if it really work: I can say for sure the "profile backlinks" that we can buy from some sites doesn't work (maybe it's just for me). I can't see it on webmaster tool and neither my ranks changed since I bought a pack of 100 links (the links are working, I see it one by one) to test. Maybe the problem is about the domains, cause my site is .com.br and I'm buying .com profile links. I guess google understand backlinks from .com.br more valuable for my sites. Back to whitehat: I wrote some articles and posted it the right way, of course on .com.br articles sites, got it indexed and can see the backlink on webmaster tool, but no change on SERP's. (maybe this can be a long term result and I'm not seeing it yet). I'm really "scratching my hand" to do some blackhat stuff, but I don't want to lose what I already have done... I heard a lot about scrapebox but doesn't fell confortable to spam as hell a lot of blogs. I really want long term permanent results (my sites are totally whitehat/corporate sites). Can you expert guys give me some point to where I need to "walk" now to improve the SERP's? I never reached top #1 and want to try to rank at least one time to understand how this can be made... I'm thinking now to pay someone to rewrite 20 copies of an article and up it on some sites, to see if 20 can improve something. But still no confident, because it will cost like $100 for a good writer do it for me on my language. Maybe I can do better things with 100 bucks. I guess I did the path right: Internal SEO -> got indexed -> backlinking from authorities -> new articles backlinks to me (is it ok at this position or no?) -> (what next ?) I know SEO is a hard/never ending work, but what I'm trying to get cleaned on my head is the path of the work (if a right path really exists). Every word will be apreciated. What do you can suggest to me to try now? (please give me a hint to see SERP's results 🙂 if I feel that something worked, no matter how it can cost to me, but I'll pay for the work happily) Sorry if I'm a little confusing, english isnt' my first language. Thanks.
