A 301 redirect to a page with a rel canonical to a page with a 301 question...
-
MOZ registers thousands of DC and Duplicate titles on a Drupal site which has a little strange setup.
Example:
www.1234.com/en-us 301 redirects to www.realsite.com/en-us which has a rel canonical to www.1234.com which 301 redirects to www.realsite.com.
If you're still with me I thank you.
My question is since MOZ registers errors, if indeed the rel canonical isn't recognized due to a 301 redirect? -
I agree it's a strange setup and also suspected it would be ignored. I appreciate the answers and will see if there is a way to hardcode a way out of it.

It's really difficult to tell what Google will do in these situations, and it's generally a bad idea to chain redirects and caonicals, but I suspect the canonicals will be ignored. The bigger problem here is that the 301 is basically saying that "realsite.com" is canonical, but then the canonical is saying that "1234.com" is canonical. Even as a human, the logic doesn't make any sense, unless I'm missing something. You may see unpredictable results (and unpredictable is usually bad).

Hi Phillip,
Check out this great reference by Dr Pete: http://moz.com/blog/rel-confused-answers-to-your-rel-canonical-questions
In a nutshell (if I can get my head around it) rel canonical is 'suggesting' to google which version of a page should be indexed for search purposes while 301 redirects are basically taking you to the canonical version of the page already and therefore is more final in regards both users and bots.
The set up you have (assuming that you want to consolidate 1234.com to realsite.com permanently) has a problem in that you are telling google that realsite.com/en-us has a canonical of 1234.com (which is just a suggestion, not a permanent redirect) and therefore yes the canonical as you say is not being reognised in the way you expect it to be because it is indeed just a suggestion, not a followed link if you see what I mean. I think 301 redirecting the realsite/en-us to realsite.com is the only thing that will be a permanent solution.
Hope I got that right, maybe someone else can chime in....

Hi Lynn thank you for your response.
Yes a horrible setup but has something to do with Drupal URL architecture.
In Moz it show's www.realsite.com/en-us and www.realsite.com as the culprits so it seems to ignore the rel cannonical from www.realsite.com/en-us to www.1234.comI might ask the Moz team if Googlebot treats this the same way.
Again thank you for your answer.

That is just nasty! Which domain is showing the duplicates? I assume the realsite.com and it is showing duplicates between the / and the /en-us versions? I cannot say if moz is registering the errors in the same way exactly as a search bot would register them, but you are asking for trouble with it.
Can you not simplify the chain? It seems to me that the cross domain canonical is pointless in this case. You have all 1234.com urls 301 to their realsite.com equivalents. OK. If needed canonical the realsite.com/en-us to realsite.com or probably better yet 301 redirect it also. It might need a bit of technical fiddling to get it all set up, but surely there must be a way!

Redirection
Hi I used to have an online shop at https://shop.domain.co.uk. I have since done a new website and and want to divert all traffic to https://domain.co.uk/shoppage. The old shop was a subdomain but the new site has a shop on the normal domain. In Moz I am getting a lot of errors with missing descriptions and URL too long. so for example one of the urls

https://shop.domain.co.uk/product-category/great-merchandise/?product_order=desc are like this. I would like to redirect them all to the new shop page.

The missing descriptions are all similar.

Is there a way I can redirect all these issues without doing them manually?

Thanks

No page authority for https and www versions
In Moz page onsite explorer, I'm getting a page rank of 1 for https://productcategory, and www./productcategory, but for the non-www version, I have a page rank of 33. The DA for each link is 25 Google is indexing my https:// version of my site (with the page rank of 1). Could this be why I'm getting outranked by my competitors (who have no content on their page, no links, and a lower domain and page authority than me?) Does this indicate some kind of issue with my redirections or settings in google search console? I would love to know how to fix this if it could be causing issues Thanks

Do we need rel="prev" and rel="next" if we have a rel="canonical" for the first page of a series
Despite having a canonical on page 1 of a series of paginated pages for different topics, Google is indexing several, sometimes many pages in each topic. This is showing up as duplicate page title issues in Moz and Screaming Frog. Ideally Google would only index the first page in the series. Do we need to use rel="prev" etc rather than a canonical on page 1? How can we make sure Google crawls but doesn't index the rest of the series?

404 even after Successful 301 Redirection
Hi, I've got quite few 404 error links on my site and I manually redirected all of them one by one with 301. They are redirecting successfully. But when I check my MOZ analysis, it still shows me as 404 error. I've done this about 4 days ago and MOZ crawled to my site couple times after that if it's not everyday. Do you know what the issue could be? And how can I fix it? PS: I've used Wordpress Redirection tool for it first and redirection did not work. Then I had to install the Simple 301 Redirects plugin to get it done.

302 redirects
We just went through a redesign and i had a lot of 301 redirects created. Looking over my crawl report in SEOmoz, i see over 14k 302 redirects with a message to change them to 301s. When confronting my IT team, I was assured these were all done with 301 status codes. Any advice on where to go from here and/or why I'm seeing this message in SEOmoz if its not true? Thanks!

Is the on page optimization tool not working?
i received a grade f for one of my keywords/page. i corrected some of the points but when i tried to submit the form again, it doesn't check off those corrected items. is there something wrong with the tool right now? also, how does the tool work if i'm targeting 2 different keywords for one page? e.g. digital marketing philippines and digital marketing agency philippines I'm pretty sure one of the keywords will have problems with at least 3 critical and high importance on page factors (broad keyword usage in page title, exact keyword usage in page title, etc.) is there an effect if there's a critical factor left unchecked because using both keywords in the title might look redundant?

Duplicate page content and search in Magento
Hi all, Firstly, I am a business owner and not a SEO genuis but I work on my site and am learning how to "tweek" everyday. That said, my site www.vintagetimes.com.au needs a bit more than a tweek. Here is problem 1: I have massive duplicate page content which is being driven primarily by search and I'm not sure how to tackle the issue. Working in Magento. Could anybody give me an instruction on how to steer robots away from search results? I would also like to know WHY a search result is here as well? Example of about 20 pages of this type of result: | Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=created_at&dir=asc 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=metal&dir=asc 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=name&dir=asc 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=price&dir=asc 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=relevance&dir=asc 50+ 1 0 Search results for: '1 carat' Vintage Times http://www.vintagetimes.com.au/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=1+carat&enable_googlecheckout=1&cat=21&order=stone&dir=asc | 50+ | 1 | 0 |

Where can I view all of the Questions that I have Answered?
AFAICT there's no way to filter questions to the ones that you have answered. Is there any plan to implement a filter like this? I realise there are email notifications available but no easy way to just go back and check on your answers. No doubt I'm just missing something here so if I'm completely wrong, please point me in the right direction 🙂 Thanks very much!
