Website.com/blog/post vs website.com/post

I have clients with Wordpress sites and clients with just a Wordpress blog on the back of website. The clients with entire Wordpress sites seem to be ranking better. Do you think the URL structure could have anything to do with it? Does having that extra /blog folder decrease any SEO effectiveness?
Setting up a few new blogs now...

Thanks for jumping in Dan! I think that it might be a niche issue. I am just trying to rule out any technical stuff. We actually do put out white papers, ebooks, infographics, webinars, etc. on a monthly basis. The traffic has been steadily increasing through social and referral sources but organic has been a bit slower. Something like 10% unique year-over-year. It could just be due to the size of the local search market.

Hey PortlandGuy
First off, yes, I would put the blog in /blog if it's within a bigger website. But... what that said, I don't think these two buckets (blog VS site + blog) really have any distinction on the rankings. What works for some niches won't work for other, so adding 12 posts a month might be great for certain industries, but others maybe not. Some industries, putting out 2 or 3 really in depth and solid pieces of content (like white papers, ebook, video etc etc) could go a lot longer then a bunch of blog posts.

Hey, I saw that one.
-
No I will check it out... Thanks for the info!

Interesting....
So, you don't think url structure matters in terms of seo?
All three of these URL should perform just the same?

As long as the path is crawlable that extra folder has absolutely no benefit or any negative effect on SEO. Keywords in folder name / URLs to not help push rank.

Have you watched the mozinar the other day from Dan Shure about answers to Wordpress questions? This might help you http://moz.com/webinars/hands-on-answers-to-the-most-asked-wordpress-qestions

Yea - maybe the niche but you should always try to improve your CTR in webmaster tools. Whats the search impressions? Thats what makes us SEOs.. because we always ask: why is this ranking and not this.
I would go check out this: http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/reviews/buzzbundle-review-how-i-drive-traffic-to-my-blog/ - Buzz Bundle is the only tool I use for SEO. Each Product, Post, Landing Page I want to rank..

Thanks for the responses! I was thinking it might have small impact but not much. I prefer to set-up websites without it if at all possible.
We have been adding about 12 new posts per month to a website for just over a year now and the traffic is just not taking off. It's been sitting at ~80 visitors a day for awhile. When I look at GA I can see the blog posts are not getting a lot of impressions. Not sure what is causing it... Could just me the niche. It a local company in the Phoenix market.
When we add content like this for our other clients traffic starts to go right up...
-
It would have a slight impact , but I assume its going to be very minimal as long as the overall length of the url is reasonable.
If you are setting up new one I would say go for the ones without blogs, as long as yo plan to deliver site content through wordpress. If you plan to use wordpress only as a blog for the site then throw it in a blog sub-folder.

If its a informational site with a blog, and you're using wordpress pages for the front of the site. It make since to have the blog its own "folder" - it makes since to filter down in google analytics because you have something to "hold on too" but I'm sure having blog in the URL does not decrease value its just how you want to structure your site.
If you wanted to send me links via PM and add me on analytics, I can take a look and let you know what I think. Have you checked WMT and see what pages people are landing on and the CTR?

My last site crawl shows over 700 404 errors all with void(0 added to the ends of my posts/pages.
Hello, My last site crawl shows over 700 404 errors all with void(0 added to the ends of my posts/pages. I have contacted my theme company but not sure what could have done this. Any ideas? The original posts/pages are still correct and working it just looks like it did duplicates and added void(0 to the end of each post/page. Questions: There is no way to undo this correct? Do I have to do a redirect on each of these? Will this hurt my rankings and domain authority? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Wade

Category VS Post
I use my website for providing an international service, I made my URL structure website https://example.com/destinations/africa/country destinations is a category and Africa is a sub-category I made an article for every continent and inserted all the continent's country manually, the page url structure is https://example.com/destinations/africa/ and the continent category URL is https://example.com/category/destinations/africa/ I'm thinking about removing the continent article and strip the category Word from URL, So i will use the subcategories directly on the same link https://example.com/destinations/africa/ what's your advice about removing the continent article and using the sub categories instead? is it a good idea to use the child category as a reference for the internal links? what do you think about keeping both of them (child category and the Article)? in case you suggest to use the child category , Is removing Category word may hurt my SEO?

What's the best redirect to use for a newer version of a blog post?
For example: suppose you have a post "The Best Games to Play for YouTube Gamers in 2016" and you want to make this a yearly series. Should you 301 the 2016 version to the new 2017 one? Should you use the canonical attribute? If 2016 isn't in the URL, should you make the 2017 one the new URL?

.Com version of my site is ranking better than .co.uk for my UK Website for branded search. 301 redirect mess
Dear Mozzers, I have an issue with my UK Website (short url is - http://goo.gl/dJ7IgD ) whereby when I type my company name in to google.co.uk search the .com version returns in Search as opposed to the .co.uk and from looking at open site explorer the page rank of the .com is higher than the .co.uk ?. Infact I cant even see the .co.uk homepage version but other pages from my site. The .com version is also 301'd to the .co.uk. From looking at Open Site Explorer, I have noticed that we have more links pointing to .com as opposed to .co.uk. Alot of these are from our own separate microsites which we closed down last year and I have noticed the IT company who closed them down for some reason 301'd them to the .com version of our site as opposed to the .co.uk but If I look in http://httpstatus.io/ (http status checker tool) to check one of these mircosites it shows - 301 - 302 - 200 status codes which to me looks wrong ?. I am wondering what it should read ... e.g should it just be a 301 to a 200 status code ?. My Website short url is - http://goo.gl/dJ7IgD and an example of some of 10 microsites we closed down last year which seems to be redirected to .com is http://goo.gl/BkcIjy and http://goo.gl/kogJ02 As these were redirected almost a year ago - it is okay if I now get them redirected to the .co.uk version of my site or what should I do ? They currently redirect to the home page but given that each of the microsites are based on an individual category of my main site , would it be better to 301 them to the relevant category on my site. My only concern is that , may cause to much internal linking and therefore I wont have enough links on my homepage ? How would you suggest I go about building up my .co.uk authority so it ranks betters than the .com- I am guessing this is obviously affecting my rankings and I am losing link juice with all this. Any advice greatly appreciated . thanks Pete

Canonical / 301 Redundancy
Suppose I have two dynamic URLs that lead to the identical page: www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 and www.example.com/product.php?y=1 The x=1 parameter had some historical meaning, but is now unused. All references to the x=1 parameter have been removed from internal links and sitemaps. I have implemented two solutions: First, the header of www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 includes: Second, the .htaccess file includes the following: Redirect permanent /product.php?x=1&y=1 http://www.example.com/product.php?y=1 Questions: 1. I assume that since canonical is still relatively new, it's best to play it safe and implement both solutions. Is this correct? 2. When I point my browser to www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1, it does NOT redirect to www.example.com/product.php?y=1. The address bar continues to show the non-canonical URL. Is this because the canonical tag somehow takes precedence over the 301 redirect? 3. How long will Google Webmaster Tools continue to show these as duplicates, even though I've implemeted BOTH canonical and 301? It's been a few weeks and I thought it would have rolled off by now. Thanks!

Any advice for my website http://cvcsports.com?
I run the website http://cvcsports.com for myself and my parents. We offer custom varsity jackets for athletes/companies/etc. We rank first in Google for "letterman jackets" and near the top for "varsity jackets". I really want to reach #1 for "varsity jackets" (we were briefly #1 a few days ago but didn't stay there). Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to achieve that? Thanks in advance for the tips!

301 vs. 404
If a listing on a website is no longer available to display is it better to resolve to a 301 redirect or use a 404? I know from an SEO point of view a 301 will pass on the link value, but is that as valuable as saying tto the user hey that page is no lonoger available try something else?
