Writing Service/Product Descriptions
-
Hi,
I work for a site that allows people to book a variety of different services in different locations (mainly hair and beauty related). The site is still in development so I can't link to it I'm afraid.
My colleague is about to start writing these descriptions for each of the beauty salons we have signed up and I thought I'd take the opportunity to check what everyone else thought about these descriptions.
As far as I'm concerned, a near perfect example can be found at http://www.toptable.co.uk/fishers-in-the-city
We have about 100 words at the most, so I was thinking that as long as we get in the name of the salon, the location (being more descriptive than the general area our services search function allows for) and the USP of each salon - their specialty services.
Is there anything else you'd include? Foremost, I want this to be as descriptive as possible to offer more detailed information about the salon.
Thanks!

What does your audience/customers care about? Is there a way you can survey them? What about looking at reviews that they've left to see if you can figure out what is important to them, what concerns they might have had (that you can address) etc.
What about the businesses being listed - what are their goals? What do they want to target?
Why so few words? You say you want to be as descriptive as possible by only have 100 words at most?

Hi All, I have a branded product that's always ranked 1st. It's a popular product which attracts the majority of our website's traffic. Now it's suddenly dropped from 1st to 20th. Can anyone advise me why this has happened? I've made no radical changes in the last month. keyword: Wattbike Atom Url:https://wattbike.com/gb/product/atom atom

Putting review aggregation in product's navigation
Do you guys think it's a bad idea to put a review aggregation page in a product's navigation? Such as: "Which Brand of Men's Shampoo Is Best for You?" Rand suggests against it in this Whiteboard Friday as it interferes with a product's funnel, but I wonder if including it in navigation will give a domain and that page increased authority for a head keyword, such as "men's shampoo." What do you guys think?

Alt text / internal linking
Hi everyone A question about best practice when linking from pictures on our homepage - hirespace.com We have an option of using divs with background images (nicer in terms of design) but it means that we can't use anchor text or alt text to show Google what these internal links are about. The other option is to use images which do not allow us as much flexibility in terms of CSS but would allow us to use alt text. There is also an opinion that we should have separate text links at the bottom of the homepage to get the anchor page in. What is best practice in this situation - is alt text worth sacrificing some CSS flexibility for? How important is anchor/alt text for internal linking? Thanks guys.

Google Authorship v Product Rich Snippets
Hi Folks, So ,we have a website that we have fully configured with Product Rich Snippets (its an e-Commerce Store), including product image and the usual. We are considering verifying the Authorship of the website for the client as they will have an extensive blog. My question is, if we verify the Authorship of the website, which will Google use in terms of the rich snippet photograph in the SERP, will it use the product image as detailed in the Product Rich Snippet or us the company logo we have on the Google Plus page (Verified Author) Or is it a case we only add the rel:author tag to pages without products. Would just like to verify before we continue on as Thanks in advance John

A / B Split testing
If you have developed a server-side A / B split testing tool. How do you avoid that Google will think you are doing cloaking. When a user enters www.xxxxx.com/xxxxxx/ he gets either version 1 or version 2 back from the server on the same url. If the user does not accept session cookies he will always get version 1.

Optimise duplicate products or canonical link
We exist in a niche market with a good % of products that sell well at specific times of the year. Lets say for example a red cup can be sold as a christmas red cup and a valentine red cup or just a red cup. Would we be best to optimize each specific product specifically for those seasons/events on different pages or keep google pointed to just one page using a canonical link.
