Leaking organic traffic - how to debug?
-
Hi all,
We've been running an eCommerce marketplace for more than 2.5 years now. Most of our traffic and revenue have been from organic traffic, which have been growing steadily with our inventory and brand, peaking at March this year. From there, we started losing organic traffic (and revenue) each month, at a rate of about 15-20% - for no reason we can understand. In addition, some of our older pages no longer appear in search results (unless we add the name of the site to the search query).
We launched a redesign on the end of May, which seemed to initially improve engagement, but didn't affect this trend of lower organic traffic.
Our webmaster tools doesn't show anything special - if anything, we made an effort to clean-up every 404 that appears there and other small issues.
We did make the following changes very recently, but it did not seem to have a positive effect (so far):
- We have deep pagination for some categories of the site, and we just added rel=prev, next in the head of every paginated series on the site.
- We started generating a dynamic sitemap and submitted it to google. For some reason only about a fourth of the pages on the sitemap are indexed.
In addition, the "index status" as reported by webmaster tools shows some weird numbers. First, the number there is way bigger than the amount of pages we have - possibly all the combinations of our listing categories and pagination. That number was constant for a while, before taking a deep earlier this year, rising back up and declining again for the last couple of months. Screenshot of the graph
What would be the first steps you'd take to understand the core of the problem? we're really at a loss here.

Awesome Dan, many of the points you raise are things we are looking at and the video was spot on. Many thanks for the effort and wisdom!

Hey Adam
The best place to start is really diagnose where and when the exact organic traffic loss is happening.
Is there an exact date in analytics you dropped off for organic traffic? Or is it gradual? If it's an exact date, you can match it up to the algo history and determine if it's panda or penguin related.
Then secondly I would look at your average position report in webmaster tools under queries to see if your rankings have dropped. Sometimes traffic loss can occur without ranking drop, so you'd want to see if that's in fact what it is. Or maybe you're tracking rankings.
If it is lost ranking then you may want to start segmenting organic traffic in analytics. Is the loss across all keywords? Can you pinpoint a few high volume keywords that were hit? Or were certain pages hit?
Let's walk through the site a little on video;
(the first few seconds is a little jumpy, sorry!)
First time trying this in the Moz Q&A. Let me know what you think - helpful?
Lastly - your question about the crazy numbers for indexation in WMT. I see this a lot too. This tells me Google is not sure what pages on your site are important or not. There's probably a lot of extra pages which are not important being crawled. I would mitigate this with a great XML sitemap as well as noindexing of things like subpages and pages that present the same content but just filtered and/or sorted differently.
Hope that helps!

Hope someone can help me out. If possible.
I migrated my website https://vihara.nl to https://meditatieinstituut.nl and lost about 80% traffic (see printscreens). It's over more than a month ago now and there is no sign of getting it back up. Maybe there is nothing to do and
1. I have to be patient and traffic comes back in a few months.
or
2. There is nothing to do and I've lost everything I've build up in the last years. Start over again to get the rankings back.
or maybe, maybe
3. I just forgot something that I still need to do to get the rankings back up. Or there is something I did not think of... This is done: The website is migrated 1 on 1. No changes in content, url, code, etc. Everything is exactly the same as on the previous domain. 301 redirects whole domain (via htaccess a bulk redirect). All the old pages, without exceptions, lead to the exact new page. The new domain is running from CDN (Cloudflare) with the same settings as the previous domain. SSL is installed in the exact same way. Domain migration set up in Search console (working). Uploaded new sitemap (working). Updated internal links. Changed the most important external links (where I could get contact after reaching out) In meanwhile received some new external links and also posted new content Anybody knows what to do? Or do I just have to be more patient and will it come back in a few months by itself? Looking forward to suggetions. Thanks! Is it OK to dynamically serve different content to paid and non-paid traffic from the same URL?
Hi Moz! We're trying to serve different content to paid and non-paid visitors from the same URL. Is this black hat? Here's the reason we want to do this -- we're testing a theory that paid ads boost organic rankings. This is something we saw happen to a client and we want to test this further. But we have to have a different UX that's more sparse and converts better for paid. Thanks for reading!

Sitelinks in non-brand based organic search results
Hi all, I have a question for everyone. Sitelinks have been around for a while now & I've always seen them when the search is for a brand's name. However, today, when looking at the rankings for one of the campaigns we manage, we noticed there were sitelinks in the number #1 & #2 positions in Google (Australia) for the search term "Dance Costumes". Whilst both the companies have Dance Costumes in their title, so do all the other results & so I don't see why it warrants the sites to be relevant via their brand name.

Note: The results are organic results, not paid results (where you can add sitelinks). Firstly, has anyone seen this before (screenshot attached)?
And secondly, is there markup/schema that allows you to do this (none that I know of)? danceCostumes-sitelinks.png0 -
Large Site - Complete Site URL Change and How to Preserver Organic Rankings/Traffic
Hello Community, What is your experience with site redesign when it comes to preserving the traffic? If a large enterprise website has to go through a site-wide enhancement (resulting in change of all URLs and partial content), what do you expect from Organic rankings and traffic? I assume we will experience a period that Google needs to "re-orientate" itself with the new site, if so, do you have similar experience and tips on how to minimize the traffic loss? Thanks

Okay. So I had the top spot for organic rank ( # 1 position ) above the places section. Now it has been eliminated and I am in the top spot for just the places section. What gives?
So i dont just want to be number in the places section.
