Which duplicate content should I remove?
-
I have duplicate content and am trying to figure out which URL to remove. What should I take into consideration?
Authority?
How close to the root the page is?
How clear the path is?
Would appreciate your help! Thanks!

Hi,
Let me back up a step. When you say remove duplicate content, do you mean delete the page? For example, pageA.html and pageB.html have the same content. In your example, are you asking do you delete pageA.html or delete pageB.html? I wouldn't delete either page as both pages likely have traffic, links, etc.
Instead of deleting, you want to pick which page is the canonical version of that page. More simply, when somebody Googles the terms that page is targeting, do you want pageA.html to show up or do you pageB.html to show up? If you decide you want pageA.html to show up, then you need to redirect pageB.html to pageA.html. That way, if somebody goes to pageB.html they end up on pageA.html. If you delete pageB.html and somebody goes there, they'll end up on an error page.
Now, on where question...in terms of deciding what version is canonical, I would suggest you look at authority first and foremost. If the domain authority in OSE is higher for pageA.html than it is for pageB.html, keeping pageA.html makes sense. Things like URL structure are only mildly important, especially when making decisions like this.
Hope that helps. Thanks,
Matthew

Content Strategy/Duplicate Content Issue, rel=canonical question
Hi Mozzers: We have a client who regularly pays to have high-quality content produced for their company blog. When I say 'high quality' I mean 1000 - 2000 word posts written to a technical audience by a lawyer. We recently found out that, prior to the content going on their blog, they're shipping it off to two syndication sites, both of which slap rel=canonical on them. By the time the content makes it to the blog, it has probably appeared in two other places. What are some thoughts about how 'awful' a practice this is? Of course, I'm arguing to them that the ranking of the content on their blog is bound to be suffering and that, at least, they should post to their own site first and, if at all, only post to other sites several weeks out. Does anyone have deeper thinking about this?

Internal Duplicate Content Question...
We are looking for an internal duplicate content checker that is capable of crawling a site that has over 300,000 pages. We have looked over Moz's duplicate content tool and it seems like it is somewhat limited in how deep it crawls. Are there any suggestions on the best "internal" duplicate content checker that crawls deep in a site?

Should I remove all meta descriptions to avoid duplicates as a short term fix?
I’m currently trying to implement Matt Cutt’s advice from a recent YouTube video, in which he said that it was better to have no meta descriptions at all than duplicates. I know that there are better alternatives, but, if forced to make a choice, would it be better to remove all duplicate meta descriptions from a site than to have duplicates (leaving a lone meta tag description on the home page perhaps?). This would be a short term fix prior to making changes to our CMS to allow us to add unique meta descriptions to the most important pages. I’ve seen various blogs across the internet which recommend removing all the tags in these circumstances, but I’m interested in what people on Moz think of this. The site currently has a meta description which is duplicated across every page on the site.

Duplicate content issue - online retail site.
Hello Mozzers, just looked at a website and just about every product page (there are hundreds - yikes!) is duplicated like this at end of each url (see below). Surely this is a serious case of duplicate content? Any idea why a web developer would do this? Thanks in advance! Luke prod=company-081

Can a website be punished by panda if content scrapers have duplicated content?
I've noticed recently that a number of content scrapers are linking to one of our websites and have the duplicate content on their web pages. Can content scrapers affect the original website's ranking? I'm concerned that having duplicated content, even if hosted by scrapers, could be a bad signal to Google. What are the best ways to prevent this happening? I'd really appreciate any help as I can't find the answer online!

Finding Duplicate Content Spanning more than one Site?
Hi forum, SEOMoz's crawler identifies duplicate content within your own site, which is great. How can I compare my site to another site to see if they share "duplicate content?" Thanks!
