Wordpress tags and duplicate content?
-
I've seen a few other Q&A posts on this but I haven't found a complete answer. I read somewhere a while ago that you can use as many tags as you would like. I found that I rank for each tag I used. For example, I could rank for best night clubs in san antonio, good best night clubs in san antonio, great best night clubs in san antonio, top best night clubs in san antonio, etc. However, I now see that I'm creating a ton of duplicate content.
Is there any way to set a canonical tag on the tag pages to link back to the original post so that I still keep my rankings? Would future tags be ignored if I did this?

It is true they will not "penalize" for tags or archives directly, but you can make your site much better by doing many of the things Mike recommends above.
I wrote a post talking through how to assess your tags, and deciding which ones to delete and/or noindex: here.
Here's the elephant in the room too, you may rank for those tags, but do they bring traffic? What is the on-site metrics for your tag traffic? Bounce rate? Time on page?
It is true you may rank for some tags, but in general they never provide traffic, or the right traffic, compared to the content its self.

rel=canonical tells Google do not index this page because is a sort of duplicate content of this other one, the original one. I think, as I said, to optimize one tag page for 2/3/4 similar key phrases and you probably can do a redirect 301 from a couple of tag pages to the one you want to rank.
To avoid big mistakes I think it is a good idea to put original content in these tag pages. Use the tag description, and the excerpts (or custom fields) to give some original preview of the posts.

I still don't understand... I read this on Managewp.com:
Google (and other major search engines) will never penalize a WordPress site for having archive pages that publish and point to the same content. They confirmed this way back in 2008.
So.... can I still have all my tags? Is there anything wrong with having a lot of tags if I just show the excerpt? Or am I going to be penalized for duplicate content?
I don't want to lose the rankings I already have because of my tags by noindexing them, and I don't want to prevent getting future rankings because they're not indexed. But I also don't want to be penalized. Help!

Ok so it's possible to set the rel=canonical on each tag page to point to the main post. Will I still rank for the tags and it won't be considered duplicate content?

The SEO benefits of Tags tends to be negligible. Mainly they work together to help the user experience by tying together similar articles and increasing a visitor's time of site and pages viewed by offering them similar content that may draw their attention. The biggest problems with Tags (especially on Wordpress) is if you don't set them to NoIndex and have artciles to show Full instead of a Snippet on the archive page. When this happens you create a duplicate version on every Tag archive attached to the post, the Author archive, the category archive and the homepage. And a one-off tag with no other posts associated with it becomes useless because it creates more duplicate content without effectively tying your article to any other similar posts.
I almost always tell people with Wordpress blogs to switch posts to showing snippets on homepage and archives to lessen duplication, NoIndex archives, and (where possible) clean up & remove useless one-off tags that you don't think you'd use again and plan new content to add to the one-off tags you would use again.

I think you have to avoid putting all these tags. Create a single tag "Night Clubs in San Antonio" and work with content (tag description, tag title) and inbound links to optimize a single page for a couple of key phrases.
If you want to set rel=canonical you can use the Conditional Tags.

How to avoid duplicate content when blogging from a site
I have a wordpress plastic surgery website. I have a wordpress blog on the site. My concern is avoiding duplicate content penalties when I blog. I use my blog to add new information about procedures that have pages on the same topic on the main site. Invariably same keywords and phrases can appear in the blog-will this be considered Duplicate content? Also is it black hat to insert anchor text in a blog linking back to site content-ie internal link or is one now and then helpful

GWT Duplicate Content and Canonical Tag - Annoying
Hello everyone! I run an e-commerce site and I had some problems with duplicate meta descriptions for product pages. I implemented the rel=canonical in order to address this problem, but after more than a week the number of errors showing in google webmaster tools hasn't changed and the site has been crawled already three times since I put the rel canonical. I didn't change any description as each error regards a set of pages that are identical, same products, same descriptions just different length/colour. I am pretty sure the rel=canonical has been implemented correctly so I can't understand why I still have these errors coming up. Any suggestions? Cheers

Duplicate Content Problem!
Hi folks, I have a quite awkward problem. Since a few weeks a get a huge amount of "duplicate content errors" in my MOZ crawl reports. After a while of looking for the error I thought of the domains I've bought additionally. So I went to Google and typed in site:myotherdomains.com The results was as I expected that my original website got indexed with my new domains aswell. That means: For example my original website was index with www.domain.com/aboutus - Then I bought some additional domains which are pointing on my / folder. What happened is that I also get listed with: www.mynewdomains.com/com How can I fix that? I tried a normal domain redirect but it seems as this doesn't help as when I am visiting www.mynewdomains.com the domain doesnt change in my browser to www.myoriginaldomain.com but stays with it ... I was busy the whole day to find a solution but I am kinda desperate now. If somebody could give me advice it would be much appreciated. Mike

How to resolve duplicate content and title errors?
Hello, I'm new to this resource and SEO. I have taken the time to read other posts but am not entirely sure about the best way to resolve the issues I am experiencing and so am hoping for a helpful hand. My site diagnostics advise me that most of my errors relate to duplicate content and duplicate page titles. Most of these errors seem to relate to our ecommerce product pages. A little about us first, we manufacture and retail over the internet our own line of unique products which can only be purchased through our website. So it’s not so important to make our product pages stand out from competitors. An example of one of our product pages can be found here: http://www.nabru.co.uk/product/Sui+2X2+Corner+Sofa In terms of SEO we are focusing on improving the rankings of our category pages which compete much more with our competitors, but would also like our product pages to be found via a google search for those potential customers that are at the late stage of a buying cycle. So my question: Whilst it would be good to add more content to the product pages, user reviews, individual product descriptions etc (and have good intentions to do this over time, which unfortunately is limited) is there an easy way to fix the duplicate content issues, ensure our products can be found and ensure that the main focus is on our category pages? Many thanks.

Magento and Duplicate content
I have been working with Magento over the last few weeks and I am becoming increasingly frustrated with the way it is setup. If you go to a product page and remove the sub folders one by one you can reach the same product pages causing duplicate content. All magento sites seem to have this weakness. So use this site as an example because I know it is built on magento, http://www.gio-goi.com/men/clothing/tees/throve-t-short.html?cid=756 As you remove the tees then the clothing and men sub folders you can still reach the product page. My first querstion is how big an issue is this and two does anyone have any ideas of how to solve it? Also I was wondering how does google treat question marks in urls? Should you try and avoid them unless you are filtering? Thanks
