Parked & primary domains
-
Aloha,
I am completely new at this, so please forgive me if I am not describing my question very well, or if these questions has been asked many times before!
My husband and I have an LLC and a DBA which sell the same products (although with different emphasis). For the LLC and DBA we have different domains, but we would like for both domains to lead to the website. To do this I have set one domain as primary (makanagardens.com) and the other as parked (bigislandcoffeeroasters.com). My questions are these:
-
Since both domains have the same content, could I be "demoted" by google for duplicate content?
-
I have submitted sitemaps for both domains to google and bing. Is that alright?
-
Does it matter which domain name we link-build upon? So far I have been link-building upon whichever domain is applicable at the time.
Thanks!

Parked domains usually 301 to another domain. I guess they do it because they think it is the best thing to do. These days the general public are used to typing in a domain and clicking it and it redirects to another site. If you have two separate product types I think you should have 2 totally separate websites.

Thank you! All good points. I kept the two pages, each with it's own site map because I didn't want our budding tropical flower accounts (pun intended) to be put-off by a domain focused on coffee. After all, coffee is our passion and flowers are our income
Any thoughts on how I could discourage potential floral clients from bouncing/ ignoring a site with a coffee-centric domain and DBA? Should I just partition them into two completely separate websites (once again increasing my workload)?
-
Thanks for the quick response.
We have the two separate domains because we are in the processes of adjusting the dominate product we produce and sell from Hawaiian flowers to Big Island coffee, although we will continue to offer both. We did some SEO work last year with our original LLC and we have clients who search for it, so I didn't wan't to yank it off the web.
so if having a parked domain and a primary domain is so damaging, why do people do it to begin with?
-
This will be seen as duplicate content and will halve the benefits of any pages.
Parked domains generally just point to one site so all you've done is create two identical sites in Googles eyes.
Why would you submit two identical sitemaps? You could declare within the htaccess file which is the original content but again your making things complicated when you link build as you dont want to double the work needed to get your site ranking benefits.

Hi,
You need to pick one of the domains as your primary domain and focus on it. Have the other domain 301 redirect to the primary domain. Having 2 domains with the same site is silly, confusing and very bad SEO.
What is your reason for wanting 2 domains separate? Did your website designer not advise you that this was a bad idea?
Cheers
Jon

Bing & JavaScript?
Hi Moz Community, Are Bing/Yahoo crawlers different from Google’s crawler in terms of how they process client side JavaScript and especially content/data loaded by client side JavaScript? Thanks,

Is it problematic for Google when the site of a subdomain is on a different host than the site of the primary domain?
The Website on the subdomain runs on a different server (host) than the site on the main domain.

Redirecting domain to the main domain (hosting cost?)
Hello Everyone, I have the following situation. There is main domain and a secondary domain that is related to the page on the main domain. I want to integrate the content of the secondary domain into the page on the main domain and redirect the secondary domain via 301 to that specific page. As i understand I can do it via .htaccess using rewrite mechanism. http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection But the question is does it mean I have to keep paying for the hosting for the secondary domain? Because htaccess has to be located on the web server so I would need a hosting plan for it? Is that true? Is there any way around it? P.S. to avoid any confusion - I am talking about hosting plan - not domain registration fees

Different Domain Structure & hyperlinks pointing to them_Need Clarification
Hi, I have a question regarding the Domain Structure and hyperlinks should point to. I know that all of the below domain/URL structure are different. The first thing I have read is that we should do 301 redirect from non www domain.com domain.com/ to www domain/site URL. www.domain.com www.domain.com/ What about the trailing slash, does the Google considers the building links to www.domain.com/ is same as with out trailing slash, www.domain.com Or we have to any 301 redirect for these domain URL format as well. Please clarify my doubt. The same doubt is there for these two URL Structure as well. http://www.domain.com (Root domain with out trailing slash) http://www.domain.com/ (Domain with trailing slash) And if I am concentrating on my Homepage what is the best URL structure to follow whether the root domain or the domain with trailing slash. Can someone please clarify above doubts Thanks Vicky

My domain does not come in the search results, what do I do?
Hi, I have a website called www.bollykings.com It had a pretty solid rank on google for a number of keywords but 4-5 months back, it was badly affected by the Panda update. Now it comes nowhere. I have started updating and posting new articles on it since the last two months. When I search for "bollykings" on Google.com, website does not come only in the first 40 results. What could this mean?

301 redirect from domain to home.aspx
We have been asked to look at a website and have found a 301 redirect from the domain www.domain.com to www.domain.com/home.aspx. Why would someone do this, this way round? We can't think of a good reason and are wondering if we have overlooked something? Thanks for your help.
