Ranking Factors
-
Hi,
Question from a newbie.
Several years ago, my company invented The Mosquito device which emits high frequency sound to disperse groups of troublesome kids. I guess you could say it went viral. The result was that we have always ranked at position 1 or 2 on Google and never really put any work in to it. It was automatic.
My question is, that over the years we have brought out other products which were not as significant etc. and have put a bit of effort in to rankings in the UK and done OK, however, no we are about to launch something that is going to generate a lot of interest in the security market, but not as much as mosquito.
We have therefore been putting some serious thought in to the name of this product and this is where i am stuck, i have only been learning SEO for a matter of months, just enough to know that i don't know enough, so here is my plea for guidance.
Our company is called Compound Security Systems www.compoundsecurity.co.uk and we make GSM and GPRS communicating security systems that are battery powered and wireless, for use in empty properties, construction sites, farms, etc.
Our new product is one of the above but with a visual verification (camera / video) system in it specifically for EXTERNAL use (there are 1 or 2 for internal use).
The only name we can come up with that is not already in use is 'CompoundVision". Now, going back to Mosquito, we ranked 1 or 2 even though there are millions of pages of content relating to Mosquitos. We have a similar situation with CompoundVision. Compound is part of our company name, the camera systems will also be used to secure compounds, but 'compound vision' is how insects eyes work and there is a huge amount of content out there.
I have run a keyword analysis in Moz.com Keyword analysis tool (see below) but i really do not understand how to draw a conclusion due to the mitigating factors above.
Any suggestions / wisdom would be most welcome.
Thanks
Si

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your answer. I appreciate your comments.

Even with the right name, you may not be able to reproduce what you did with mosquito, due to algorithm changes pertaining to exact match keywords--that is, unless you happen to accidentally stumble on the perfect combo of name/keyword (I suppose that's what you're hoping for). Today however, if you're coming out with a hot new product, focus your SEO and social networking on the brand/name. While you may not be able to take advantage of the keyword helping the product achieve viral status, you can still take advantage of social media to build and capitalize on engagement around content you create for the product. Focus on brand awareness over keyword today.

Rankings-- Red & Green
Question - you can see the green positive and the red negative. If I optimize a certain keyword, and it turns red - how long should I wait before I optimize it again? The same with green - I had a keyword ranking up 20 points...which of course is good...should just wait for a a few months or use the keyword again next month? Not use how I should address the ups and downs (green & red) of rankings. thank you..

Keyword Ranking Research Question
Hi Mozzers,This is probably a nooby question, but I was wondering how you guys end up deciding if a Keyword is too hard to rank for? Also vice versa, when do you decide that a keyword is too low volume to rank for so you try to rank for a harder keyword? Eg.

Deciding that ranking for "Dell Computers" is too hard and then deciding to rank for "Dell Small Business Computers" Post-question: Do indirectly rank for Dell Computers if you try to rank for Dell Small Business Computers? If so, how much? Also, how many words inbetween Dell & Computers would there have to be to stop indirectly ranking for Dell Computers?1 -
Domain Change, Lost ranking on 1 keyword
Hey guys, Long time follower of the Q&A forum, but don't post too often. I'm having an issue I never came across. We changed a domain from mpbuilderscincy.com to mpcincinnati.com. We did the 301 redirect and all the SEO flowed through pretty well. Most pages didn't even change in file structure so we didn't need to do page redirects for the most part. Anyway, long story short, we are seeing the same rankings as we had before now (it's been about 2 months) except for 1 and only 1 keyword. It's "Home Remodeling Cincinnati". We dropped from page 2, to page 11 on Google and it won't budge. Now on Yahoo and Bing, we are right back where we were before already with that keyword. But Google just refuses to bump us back to where we were before the change. The Home Remodeling page: http://www.mpcincinnati.com/Residential-Services/Home-Remodeling.aspx has an on page grade of A for that keyword and we have it as one of our main keywords on the home page of the site (title, h1, alt tags, etc). No errors on the page. I mean it looks pretty clean for this page as far as SEO except for 1 notice that mentions the 301 canonical redirect. We uploaded the new sitemap right away. I just can't put a thumb on it and wondering if you guys had any tips. Thanks, Chris

What is the best way to do a one time rankings check of 10000+ keywords
Title pretty much sums it up. At the pricing moz offers this is not practical. Even at their highest tier i would only get 3700 keywords, so it would take several months to get the results.

Plummeting traffic and rankings for main KWs
Hi there mozzers, You have been so helpful in the past and we'd really appreciate your insights into our problem... we have two data recovery companies in the UK, one has been established for 11 years (dataclinic.co.uk) , the second (datlabs.co.uk) is a subsidiary that's been around for 5 years. Dataclinic has always ranked highly, usually in the top 1-5 on page one for relevant KWs and towards the end of last year we had traffic of approx 1,800 UK visitors/month - now we're down to only 600. Week on week we're falling and I have started to dread the monitoring checks. We're slipping in the rankings too. As our business relies almost 100% on Google rankings our phones just aren't ringing. In contrast our subsidiary company datlabs is climbing up the rankings and drawing more traffic - but unfortunately nothing like enough to compensate for the decline in the main company's traffic. We have used the same kinds of marketing strategies for both but have invested more energy into social for dataclinic, and more energy into local for datlabs. I'd say that our strategies have been less than sparkling clean - we've paid for directory links but not with the really spammy directories. We're at a loss to understand what has happened to have had such a dramatic and devastating effect - please help!! Thanks so much Sue
