Changing a site from http to https
-
Will my rankings be affected if I change domain from http to https and force redirect?
-
Thanks for all the responses.
It is a large site that runs on Wordpress. For the login and registration pages we are currently forcing https. It currently shows the https pages in SERPS for login and registration. Just want to be sure that if I redirect the entire website to https that it wouldn't hurt my rankings.

Lesley,
Depending on a number of factors like the size of your site, its authority, and architecture, you may drop temporarily in rankings and traffic if you redirect from http to https. FYI, another way of handling it would be to rel=canonical the http to the https for all practical purposes, it would accomplish the same thing but would leave both versions available to the visitor.

Not all the time I know is a rule HTTP S is slower than without SSL CERT however if you're using SPDY your far better off. You have less calls, and it is lightning fast. Using Certs I would only do this if I were using Nginx currently in my opinion the best Web server available and the only one that can implement SPDY
WordPress only hosts like Zippykid along with, web synthesis have implemented this months ago.
the advantages are enormous To see how well they perform with a certain check out their speed run them through a speed test
I don't know what type of website you are running however
if you do it the correct way you can actually secure your site while speeding it up
any web host that runs a VPS most likely will allow you to run Nginx
a small orange is an excellent example however liquid Web rack space and many more allow you to do the same thing including media Temple hosting companies
I would strongly recommend moving over to it uses one 8th of the resources meaning it's much less expensive to run a server if your paying for RAM
cloudflare.com will also allow you to implement this on your current host no matter what it's running all in all this will make your site safer and even faster believe it or not

http://www.chromium.org/spdy/spdy-whitepaper
https://developers.google.com/speed/spdy/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDY
Last year, GlobalSign, DigiCert, Comodo and nginx announced the improvement of privacy and reliability of nginx web server with OSCP stapling. The method enhances the basic OCSP method since it allows the presenter of a certificate, such as the website hosting the SSL certificate, to deliver the OCSP response in the browser.
If you honestly don't have any reason however I don't suspect you would just want to switch your site over to use a cert.
I would leave well enough alone however if you do want to employ this certificate I would use either one of the hosts I suggested firehost My personal favorite, and the host I use most often is one of the absolute best in the world cloud for all around hosting in my opinion however is allowing for this to be implemented at $25 a month with the SSL CERT and is making it faster than without the cirque so as long as you're running SPDY a protocol Google itself came up with to fix this issue you will not have a problem sites like American Express WordPress.com and many more are using it it's not the wrong way to go.
However what these gentlemen I think are saying I is use a cart that is hosted by a 3rd party and already has a strong PCI compliance something that would mimic your site and just be there to accept payments if I'm correct is that right guys?
Respectfully,
Thomas

why would you want to do that? Https is usually slower than http (so you might lose rankings on that alone)

Content from Another Site
Hi there - I have a client that says they'll be "serving content by retrieving it from another URL using loadHTMLFile, performing some manipulations on it, and then pushing the result to the page using saveHTML()." Just wondering what the SEO implications of this will be. Will search engines be able to crawl the retrieved content? Is there a downside (I'm assuming we'll have some duplicate content issues)? Thanks for the help!!

Mobile site backlinks?
Hello, Our mobile site redirects to desktop in a desktop browser and vice versa; however, they are different sites. This said, shouldn't the backlinks for our mobile site be the same as for our desktop site since one redirects to the other. We show no backlinks in my analysis? Any help or insight would be extremely appreciated! Thank you!

Cache Not Working on Our Site
We redesigned our site (www.motivators.com) back in April. Ever since then, we can't view the cache. It loads as a blank, white page but the cache text is at the top saying: "This is Google's cache of http://www.motivators.com/. It is a snapshot of the page as it appeared on Jul 22, 2013 15:50:40 GMT. The current page could have changed in the meantime. Learn more. Tip: To quickly find your search term on this page, press Ctrl+F or ⌘-F (Mac) and use the find bar." Has anyone else ever seen this happen? Any ideas as to why it's happening? Could it be hurting us? Advice, tips, suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Why does my site rank so badly
its my turn to ask the interminable question why does my site rank so badly? site is: marriagerecords.org.uk. it was #1 for 'marriage records' on google for about 6 months. then it was 5th to 10th for about 2 months. now it is nowhere for this phrase and anything else, none of the pages I have written rank for anything. I have spent hours upon hours researching original content and I have got some great backlinks from sites like wrexham.gov.uk and somerset.gov.uk (some dont show in opensiteexplorer yet). im guessing im over-optimizing something but i'd love some concrete fixes if anyone could suggest any. thanks, tom

Redirecting a old aged site to a new exact match site?
Hi All, I have a question. I have 2 sites with me in the same sector and want some help. site 1 is a old site started back in 2003 and has some amount of links to it and has a pr 3 with some good links to it but doesn't rank much for any keywords for the timing. site 2 is a aged domain but newly developed with unique content and has a good amount of exact match with a .com version. so will there be any benefit by redirecting site 1 to site 2 to get the seo benefits and a start for link bulding? or is it best to develop and work on each site? the sector is health insurance. Thanks

Mobile site rank on Google S.E. instead of desktop site.
Hello, all SEOers~ Today, I would like to hear your opinion regarding on Mobile site and duplicate contents issue. I have a mobile version of our website that is hosted on a subdomain (m instead www). Site is targeting UK and Its essentially the same content, formatted differently. So every URL on www exists also at the "m" subdomain and is identical content. (there are some different contents, yet I could say about 90% or more contents are same) Recently I've noticed that search results are showing links to our mobile site instead of the desktop site. (Google UK) I have a sitemap.xml for both sites, the mobile sitemap defined as follows: I didn't block googlebot from mobile site and also didn't block googlebot-mobile from desktop site. I read and watched Google webmaster tool forum and related video from Matt Cutts. I found many opinion that there is possibility which cause duplicate contents issue and I should do one of followings. 1. Block googlebot from mobile site. 2. Use canonical Tag on mobile site which points to desktop site. 3. Create and develop different contents (needless to say...) Do you think duplicate contents issue caused my mobile site rank on S.E. instead of my desktop site? also Do you think those method will help to show my desktop site on S.E.? I was wondering that I have multi-country sites which is same site format as I mentioned above. However, my other country sites are totally doing fine on Google. Only difference that I found is my other country sites have different Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop site, but my UK mobile site has same Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop. Do you think this also has something to do with current problem? Please people~! Feel free to make some comments and share your opinion. Thanks for reading my long long explanation.

Http and Https Update
Guys, I was just wondering what is the current up-to-date resolution for HTTP and HTTPS, One of my client needs SSL for transaction, and they only need single page to be encrypted(SSLed) , So should I Force SSL that page only and direct entire HTTPS pages to HTTP to avoid duplicate page issue, or would it considered cloaking. It is been long time i did something similar, Or current Search Engines algo can handle it by themselves and i should just leave it . Thanks!

Submitting site to dmoz.org
Over the last couple of years I've repeatedly submitted (about 4 times) our site to dmoz.org, hoping to get listed but have never been successful in getting the site recognized. We have an eCommerce site that deals in automotive parts and accessories. What does it take to get your site accepted in dmoz and how do you go about it? Thanks, Steve
