Best way to research the social potential of content (NOT just search potential).
-
I'm wondering if anyone in the community has found a good method for researching the social potential for content. I'll break down what I'm asking exactly so it makes more sense.
In order for a page to get ranked highly on Google for a keyword it needs authority (usually). With social media having an ever increasing impact on the authority of content, creating content that has social value (shared, liked, talked about, etc) can really help increase the authority of that page in Google's eyes. In saying this if content is created that people search AND talk a lot about, it's authority will rise quickly, thus getting traffic through that keyword is easier and faster (not to mention your link building happens for you organically).
I've formulated a pretty good keyword research process to find the search potential of creating content around that keyword; however I am looking at how to research the potential social value of content. I'm thinking the best way would be to crawl the social platforms and find trends in what people are talking about for the last x amount of time. Must be some patterns to look for in things like hashtags.
At the end of the day I'd like to have content created based on both search keyword and social research.
I'm looking for advice from people who have found a good way to do this social research on what they look for / what tools they use.

I agree it's best to communicate with people that actually need your product; however I'm talking from an SEO point of view on authority. Let's say you sell a product that uses a certain type of technology. For example you sell an electronics product that utilizes a new open-source logic board. The people you sell this electronics product to might not care about, or be talking about the logic board, but members of the open source logic board community would certainly be interested in hearing about an application built from it.
One of the big factors in SEO is the authority of pages and domains. If the logic board community starts talking about your content about the application of their board, this signals to Google that it's an authoritative source of information, thus the domain it's associated with is authoritative. While this might not seem the most productive in terms of getting sales short term, it raises authority which makes ranking for keywords easier.
I wouldn't make a piece of content unless it's clear from the keyword research that traffic can be created from it. If it's easily sharable this raises the authority of that content in a fast, almost automatic way.
I guess a better way to ask my question is: Is there an easy way to identify the kinds of things people are talking about on social channels? Not only this but the people in your target market?
My goal is to create content around social trends on these networks that has high search potential in it's keywords.

I'll check out reddit. I've heard of some good growth hack stories through utilizing that platform. Thanks!

I'm wondering if creating content to fit what's trending is a solid organic SEO concept. By nature, trends are fickle, while SEO is a strategy play. The topics that are trending today: 1) May not be relevant to your business and 2) May not be of interest to your audience. Maximizing social is not about getting in front of as many people as you can, it's about getting in front of as many of your audience members as you can. Most business owners don't tend to be keen on marketing to people who are never going to buy their product.
Yet the stuff that that is relevant to your specific audience is certainly floating around in social media. In fact, it's likely that it's being talked about, commented on, shared, liked, +1'd, tweeted, and otherwise engaged with in social media at this very minute. The key is to have a clear understanding of who your audience is and what kinds of content they like, what they need, what they don't need, what's important to them, what's going to help them chose to buy your product. It's research into those things that's going to pay off best for the marketer and the business owner.

I have one word for you: REDDIT
Daily perusing of reddit will keep you up on all of this. Also, sharing content on Reddit will let you know quickly what's worthwhile and what's not.
There isn't a fancy tool that will do it for you in my example. I just think reading the reddit pages for 15 minutes a day will do you so much good in this regard.
That's all my input.

What is everyone using for social media reporting now?
Now that Moz has retired the social element, I'm at a loss as to what to use instead. What have you all switched to? We use Hootsuite to schedule Twitter and LinkedIn posts for our clients, and Facebook native mode for scheduling there. At the end of each month I produce an SEO report for each client and up to now, that's always included the social report from Moz. I want to be able to report on the following for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. what traffic has come to the client's website from each social channel growth in followers/fans engagement for the month eg how many retweets, likes, shares etc best performing posts on each channel I've looked at Sprout, but it seems to me that in order for Sprout to give you all the reporting info you need, you have to use it to manage all your social media channels, and as mentioned above, we already use Hootsuite for this. I don't want to switch completely. Twitter Analytics gives me the info I want for Twitter, but doesn't output this to a pdf style graphical report. I just want a nice summary to give my clients every month. Any ideas as to the best way to report on all this while still using Hootsuite to do the scheduling? My feeling is that I just want a flexible, easy to use and comprehensive reporting tool that covers all social channels, and not a social media management tool.

On a website, is the most effective user experience for the social media icons to open new tabs?
There is debate around what is most effective for user experience. When a user clicks on the social media icons on our site, should a new tab be opened for the social media page or should the website redirect to the social media page?

Best way to keep in touch with Twitter leads
On Twitter every now and then I have a conversation with a few people that lasts couple days. Then the conversation dies down and a different conversation with a few other followers begins. What do you guys do to keep in touch with the followers from the older conversations and perhaps start new ones? Do any of the online tools help with that?

I'd like some thoughts on content I'm considering producing for my discount drug card business...
I'm fairly new to SEO, but I'm trying to learn. I have a discount prescription drug card business and while it's quite new (the website was created in January) I'm not very satisfied with the traffic I'm receiving...that's putting it mildly. I'm contemplating different methods I might be able to exercise in order for my website to show value....to my potential visitors and search engines. First, while I do have a blog I find it extremely difficult to offer well-written material on prescription drugs and what not....while it is my intention to offer a good product and service it's a subject that I don't have enough experience on to write intelligent posts. I'm just not in a position to hire a writer. Essentially I have two thoughts....one, trying to find a doctor, a pharmacist or a pharmacy school whereby I could professionally videotape a presenter talking about various prescription drugs, kind of like a glossary. Which prescriptions are used to treat various ailments, etc... The 2nd idea is a little disconnected to the business of prescription drugs, but along the lines of saving money and being financially sound. In this example I would tape 30 second pieces where a financial consultant might give different lessons about ways to save money or be financially prudent. For someone looking to save money on prescription drugs...this could be very useful information. My reasoning with both of these is providing original material that could make my site more authoritative and provide rich content. Videotaping these would be a good option for me because that's my primary business. I appreciate your patience and feedback. Any other ideas or input would be most welcome! Thank you.

Social Media Signals with AddThis?
Good day guys, Just a quick question. By having the AddThis sharing tool to share content such as blogs, does it still send the same social signals to Google as you would get by having the official Facebook/Twitter plug-ins? Regards

What is the best Practice for Adding Social Buttons to your Sites from SEO Perspective?
Hey Guys, As you all know there are many social buttons out there that can be added to your website. Facebook Like button, Twitter's Tweet and Follow buttons, Google +1, and AddThis buttons are just a few to mention. All of these buttons can be customized, eg. you may choose to point your FB Like button to your homepage, to a specific inner page, or to your Facebook Brand Page. Same with your +1 button. Moreover, you may choose to add Twitter and Google+ Follow buttons to your site's pages, and so on. My questions are very simple: Is there any best practice for adding social buttons to your site from SEO perspective? if yes, Which social buttons to add? Where is the ideal place for them on your page? Where these buttons should be pointing to? your homepage? specific inner page? or to your official brand pages? Thanks in Advance, Yogev.

Does shared content affect rankings?
I've noticed that when logged into Google, content shared by people within my social graph is being identified by a "(name of person) shared this". And, content shared by people not within my social graph (but people who have a Google+ account) is being identified with their picture. My questions are: Is this "(name of person) shared this" content showing on first page of results because they're in my social graph. Or would this content have been on 1st page regardless of whether it had been shared? Why is google identifying who is sharing content when they're not in my social graph? Thank you!
