Long Domain Name - Subpage URL Question
-
I have a long domain name, so domainname/services/page title can get pretty lengthy.
I have a services page, as a summary page since there's a few of htem, with more detailed on the actual page.
In this situation, would it be better to do
domainname.com/services/service-name which can exceed the suggested 70 characters, or would it be a better idea to do domain.com/service-name and just have hte m under the services menu?
Is there any advantage/disadvantage to going out 2-3 tiers? or having the sub pages of those services off the domain instead of a child of the root child page
Please let me know if any clarification is needed.
Thanks!

I mean i have a long domain in the deregulated energy market, but it's an older domain and i have it performing well. But as anything, everything can be better. So if I'm treading down a dark path here, let me know. I always operate under the premise everything can be better and nothing is non negotiable. Clearly I'm posting here for a reason

Sorry posted on an account i use for a client.
Anyway, the domain in question is houstonhouseinspection.com -> Given that it's good for the niche market of home inspections. So shortening it i don't think would be a good idea.
But the url structure i think could be reshaped and the www. could be trimmed out and i could easily keep things in the 65-75 range.
Would this be an effective measure? .. My only issue is all the www. referrals i have from multiple directory listings that have been registered. Multiple local ones and chambers and what not. So ultimately with what my goals here a reshaping of the actual sub directory names would be more efficient.

how many characters is your domain name. the longer the worse, is this an established site, if not consider getting a shorter domain that's easier for people to type in.
without knowing your product and categories complexity it's hard to give advice on what your structure should be. but exceeding 70 characters is no big deal.

I hear you, I think I'm not in too deep yet, so probably shortening is a good idea to sooner rather than later. Thanks for your input today, been insightful to say the least

I have done it both ways. The shorter the better, but sometimes you have to make it longer to get the information in. I like to use at least 1 sub directory to help with organization and this also helps with analytics in organizing how things are reported. You have to also look at the URL and think - Can I parse this with an analytic tool and get the information I need?
This is where the art comes in with the science.
Good luck!

Redirect 301 issue. I changed my domain name and Google is killing me.
Hello SEO community: I have this problem, and I don't know exactly what to do. I recently changed my domain from uclasificados.net to uclasificados.com uclasificados.net was a free classified ads for USA in spanish, and was my most affortable site, so I wanted to convert it to .com because I thought it could get more popular with the .com domain. uclasificados.com was before a free classified ads website for Colombia, but was not very popular and had poor traffic so I moved the Colombian content to uclasificados.co. Since I changed my domain from uclasificados.net to uclasificados.com I have lost a lot of ranking, and l my traffic every day is getting lower. I have already checked the 301 redirections and they are working correctly, but even thought I keep getting less traffic and less money. I have also checked with moz tools both sites link juice, and it says that uclasificados.net have better reputation. So I was wondering if I change it back and redirect uclasificados.com to uclasificados.net but I worrie that if I do that, maybe I can make things worse. What do you recommend me?

Domain forwarding
Hi Is it ok or bad practice to domain forward shorter more memorable snappier domains used for promoting a website to a longer domain where the website actually lives, such as: Promoting in social media profiles, emails and offline literature a domain with forwarding set up like: www.brand.com To the main website: www.brandincludingprimaryproductrelatedkeyword.com And if ok (not bad practice), since its the forwarded domains that are being promoted they are hence the links most likely to be shared on social media and other websites so will they be treated like 301's and 'link building' for those will pretty much equate to link building for the main domain (or not) ? Many Thanks Dan

301 an old URL with a ? in the URL?
I am redoing a site and the URL's are changing structure. The client's site was in magento and in the store they would get two URLs, for example: /store/categoryname/productname and /store/categoryname/productname?SID=dslkajsfdoiu947598whouieht983hg98 Do I have to 301 redirect both of these URL's to their new counterpart? Both go to the same content but magento seemed to add these SIDs into the navigation and Google has both versions in the index.

URL rewrite question
I have adjusted a setting in my CMS and the URL's have changed from http://www.ensorbuilding.com/section.php/43/1/firestone-epdm-rubbercover-flat-roofing to http://www.ensorbuilding.com/section/43/1/firestone-epdm-rubbercover-flat-roofing This has changed all the URL's on the website not just this example. As you can see , the .php extension has now been removed but people can still access the .php version of the page. What I want is a site-wide 301 redirect but can not figure out how to implement it? Any help is appreciated 🙂 Thanks

Directory URL structure last / in the url
Ok, So my site's urls works like this www.site.com/widgets/ If you go to www.site.com/widgets (without the last / ) you get a 404. My site did no used to require the last / to load the page but it has over the last year and my rankings have dropped on those pages... But Yahoo and BING still indexes all my pages without the last / and it some how still loads the page if you go to it from yahoo or bing, but it looks like this in the address bar once you arrive from bing or yahoo. http://www.site.com/404.asp?404;http://site.com:80/widgets/ How do I fix this? Should'nt all the engines see those pages the same way with the last / included? What is the best structure for SEO?
