SEO Service Needed

Any suggestion about hiring an SEO individual? Primary focus will be proper link/relationship building.
What questions would you ask them? What is a fair compensation method? Can the compensation be based on results vs. effort?
Thank you,
Joe

Whitespark has a good citation building service. They charge $4 for generic citation links and $5 for targeted links for your site. You can read more about it here.

Joe,
In the SEO area you want to have clear goals and objectives. What you want is someone who can look at your situation and articulate a clear plan with specific goals. If they cannot do that you do not want to deal with them. You need to determine what the measurable increase is that you will get and agree on it. If the SEO tries to tell you that they have some "special method" that does not follow the normal rules run for the hills ;).
While the link building itself is not hard(mainly boing) it is very time consuming. After the base links like Google and Bing, Yelp, Citysearch, etc are done your SEO may need to do link research to determine appropriate links. This can be very time consuming and does require some skill. A realistic price for good quality links is between $20-$30 per link (this should be the average anyway).
I would also check reviews as well as the Better Business Bureau to see if the SEO has any complaints.

What are some good organizations an SEO company can join that are strong trust signals?
We are working on a website redesign, and want to prominently include some trust signals that help people feel comfortable with us. We're including logos of a few places we've guest posted, and also the BBB and local chamber of commerce. Do you have any other ideas on logos we can include that are good trust signals? Any associations or organizations we could join? We are a trustworthy company, we just want a way to communicate that visually, and it seems organization seals and logos are the way to go. Thanks!

How many small businesses use SEO?
I'm looking for data (not opinions) on how many small businesses use SEO, that is, either do it in-house, hire a firm, or hire a freelancer. I've poked around on SEMPO and eConsultancy but can't find what I'm looking for.
