Multiple Regional Domains - such as .co.uk / .de etc for one brand

Hello,
We are in the process of building up our version 2 for our site, currently we have only one domain (i.e. xxxxx.com). Our target audience is distributed among various regions and speak different languages, we would like to know which will benefit us more:
a) by having one root domain and then having folders based on automatic IP detection, for example the customer opening a website in Japan would see the domain as: www.xxxx.com/jp.
B) or is it better to have different domains so in the above case it will be www.xxxx.co.jp.
The content on the site will be different based on the regional demand, so of course the language will be Japanese and the content will also be aligned with the Japanese community.
We plan to start with 5 different markets (UK/US/AU, Japan, China, Germany, Spanish speaking countries).
We would appreciate if you can suggest us the best route to achieve the best results.

I have done this before for a huge site in 7 languages and had many a debate over the years with Matt Cutts on it.
The short answer is multiple TLD's
Reason:Matt Said in a video and for the life of me I am unable to find it. That if they allow sites to rank in every country then people will just create content for them to get extra traffic, if they created a tool in WMT people would just tick every country saying their site was relevant. The only sure way was if they created a TLD and put some hard work into it.
doing xyz.com/jp/ is an option and then targeting a "Geographic target" in "Site Settings" but it will not get the same power as a TLD specific to that Geographic location. TLD are a very strong indication of location.You will have to setup sub folders in WMT like separate sites and target each directory with the "Geographic target".
Also, this is something I have been saying all day long, separate sites are good because you never know when Google is going to slam you with a penalty for a silly reason. You would lose all your locations in one go if they are on the same domain. But only have one site down if it happened.
Also have a good read about "hreflang" this will help you make a few decisions as this is new since the time I worked on the Multi-regional site.

I think it's easiest to have 1 domain and use subfolders for location targeting. I believe that this way your domain as a whole will benefit from all the link building. You can use Google Webmaster Tools to indicate which subfolders will target which country.

I have a small business in the United States and would like to copy our main website for my international partners. My website is a .com. I think that their domains will end in their country codes: .au and .uk. We are open to using different domains. We plan to share blog articles and other content, but do not wish to be penalized for duplication. I have tried to read articles on this topic, but am unfamiliar with a lot of the terms. Choosing a domain name in 2016
Hello Everyone I am not new to SEO but new to the forum ! I am in the travel business selling high end bicycle trips to the US market. I am about to expand my business and sell cheaper bicycle trips to the European market. My company has a got a name in the industry as well as some amazing reviews on google + and other forums. My 1 st question, would you use a totally different domain name see that is a different market and different prices or would you use the same domain name ? If you were to use the same domain would you do fr.mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com/fr. In terms of web domain, is exact match domain still powerful ? My current domain name is not an exact match domain and surfing the web, I feel like it still gives you a major advantage in 2016 ? If I choose an exact match domain, I noticed I can get www.mydomain.travel or www.mydomain.bike or get a domain for the country I am targeting www.mydomain.co.uk. Do you have advice on which domain is easier to rank ? or doesn't it change anything ?

Hi Guys, I'm ranking really well for my domains in my local geo - im wondering if it will be more effective if i moved the co.nz and com.au over to the .com - the only thing is will i still see my com.au and co.nz results on the .com?

Many of the massive sites (like Amazon) are using both .com and .co.uk. For smaller sites, is this a good way to rank highly on Google.com and .co.uk? Is there a way to do this without duplicating content or diluting link juice?

Chop down a .com to local domains - Is it worth it?
I'm wondering what would be the best approach for further expanding the online presence of the business I work for. Let me start off with the resources at my disposal. We own visafirst.com and run the business for 7 years. All that time we had the domain online. There was a penalty back in 2005, I think (for hidden text). I've been dealing with the domain since 2007. In the last few years we got translations in French, German, Italian, some pages in Japanese, and recently we got it translated in Spanish. The translations don't hold all the products the English version has. We translate only products which we can offer to the targeted audience. So far, I use language folders /en/, /fr/, /de/ etc. I have the settings in Google's Webmaster Tools set to the most appropriate country (the one we want to attract customers from). We own a lot of local domains .co.uk, .ie, .fr .de, .es, .jp, etc. Currently we either use them for small projects, like AdWords (to improve CTR) or have them point to the .com version with canonical. I like nothing more than the idea of having the local domains appear in local search results, without that inflicting damage on the .com version. If I decide to go with the local domains and redirect (probably I will use canonical to avoid the redirect mess) the existing portions of the site to their relevant local domain - visafirst.com/fr/ to point to visafirst.fr etc., I'm afraid that I would take too much away from the domain in terms of content and backlinks. So, I'm faced with the following question - Should I risk it with the local domains where we have physical presence, or should I continue using the flagship domain. Also, would local domains improve the CTR a lot? I will test that with AdWords in the days to come, however it would be nice to know if someone has faced this before. Thank You, Svet Stefanov

Domain strategy for UK and USA
Hi Everyone, We have example.org.uk with 20K inbound links. We want to target the US as well as the UK. I would be interested to hear what approaches are best for SEO. For example is it better to keep our current domain and have subdirectories for USA for example. Or would it be better to register example.org and then use subdirectories. Or is it better to use different domains for each country? Any help with this much appreciated. Cheers
