Unnatural Inbound Links Warning in GWT

Hi all,
A bit of a long questions so apologies in advance but please bear with me...
My client has received an 'Unnatural Inbound Links' warning and it is now my task to try and resolve through a process of;
- Highlighting the unnatural links
- Requesting that the links be removed (via webmaster requests)
- Possibly using the Disavow Tool
- Submitting a Reconsideration Request
So I downloaded my clients link profile from both OSE and GWT in CSV format and compared - the amount of links returned was considerably more in GWT than it was in OSE...?
So I set about going through the links, first filtering into order so that I could see blocks of links from the same URL - I highlighted in colours;
Red - Definitely need to be removed
Orange - Suspect, need to investigate further
Yellow - Seem to be ok but may revisit
Green - Happy with the link, no further action
So to my question which relates to, is it 'black & white' - is it a case of 'good link v 'bad link' or could there be some middle ground? (am I making this process even more confusing than it actually is?)
As an example, here are some 'Orange' URL's;
http://www.24searchengines.com/ (not exact URL as it goes to the travel section which is my clients niche) - this to me looks spammy and I would normally 'paint it red' and look to remove, however, when I go to the 'contact us' page;

and follow the link to remove from directory, it takes me here;
http://www.dmoz.org/docs/en/help/update.html
DMOZ???
My clients has a 'whole heap' of these type of links;

...and many many more!!
Here is another example;

...plus many more...
My client is in the 'cruise niche' and as there is a 'cruise' section on the site I'm not sure whether this constitutes a good, bad or indifferent link!
Finally, prior to me working with this client (1 month) they moved their site from a .co.uk to a .com domain and redirected all links from the .co.uk to the .com (according to GWT, over 16k have been redirected) - a lot of these 'spammy' links were to the .co.uk and have thus been redirected, should I even consider removing the redirection or will that have severe consequences?
Apologies for the long (long) post, I know I'm heading in the right direction but some assurance wouldn't go amiss!

Welcome to the challenging world of penalty removal! Â Here are my thoughts on your questions.
First of all, don't worry about dmoz and 23searchengines and the like. Â The 23searchengines sites are scraper sites and Google knows that they are not self made links. Â 99.9% of the time a dmoz link is ok. Â The exception would be the case where a site managed to get an anchor texted link on there (usually by accessing a corrupt editor). Â If your link from dmoz is anchored by your brand/url then just ignore them.
Regarding the foody's link, whether or not it's unnatural depends on the patterns your client has. Â If you've got the occasional blogroll link it may be ok. Â But, when you're auditing the links you'll soon see if this is a pattern. Â If your site has a whack of blogroll links, especially if they are keyword anchored, then they are probably on Google's radar. Â What I would do in my audit is mark this as "blogroll" and then, once I'm finished my audit I would decide whether blogroll links should be removed or not. Â The exception to this would be if I know that my client has paid for blogroll links. Â If that's the case then I would flag them for removal right away.
If you've got a pile of spammy links from your .co.uk site then removing the redirect is probably a good idea.
There is always middle ground when assessing links.

I saw with your link example http://foodys.eu/ that they have alot of sitewide sidebar links. This is a big red flag. Sitewide sidebar links are one of the easiest ways to get a penalty, as the links are unnatural, even if it is a good site (i.e. one link is great, but sitewide links bad).
Any decent sites that have these sort of links and which are giving decent traffic you should get the rel="nofollow" tag added. Of course this is dependent on the webmaster dealing with your request.

I'd be totally ruthless with your link audit, even if 1% of you thinks it is spammy, disavow it. In fact, if it isn't driving traffic then disavow it, what are you going to lose. The question to ask yourself is would you be happy to show the link to Matt Cutts? If not, then get rid.
We heard from Google recently that they are not allowed to open any files that are sent to them for security reasons so, for me, going through the effort of contacting webmasters and sending Google files with emails etc is pointless. I know they say you should be we have stopped asking because it gets you nowhere and you haven't got the time to wait for replies. I'd just get some numbers and info together about what you have disavowed, why there was these links in the first place and what you have done to remedy it. Obviously, if you can get them taken down easily then do so.
Stop building links until you have the penalty lifted! Don't look at the anchor text used to justify whether it is a good or bad link, look at the relevance to your website. I even disavow 404 and no-followed links if I think they are spammy.

Ihave recovered more than 3 websites affected by unnatural link penalty (which is a manual penalty) and used the disavow tool for several clients of mine. Here is what i do recommend for u:
1. Be more determined/accurate with links analysis. You may classify links into 3 groups:
a/definetly spammy: links in footers, sitewides, links from low quality directories, linsk from blog/directory networks, etc...
b/maybe spammy: these are links that appear to be good, but you may have to digg mire to be sure if it's really good (these could be links exhanges, links from websites that have been spotted of seeling links, etc...)
c/good links: this are links using branded anchors, parital matches or low number of exact macth anchors. These links should be placed in relevant websites and high editorial level (not linking to every rubbish oin the web)
About the redirected links, if i were to take this project, i would analyze the redirected links and check if most of them are spammy or have little to no value, i will remove the redirect and take the time and effort to build new links to the .com domain. Creating new links is better than deleting the old ones, here is why:
1. creatinng links is easier and funnier (you feel success when u earn a new good link)
2. it takes less time to see results (disavowing and deleting links may take upt to 3-6 mnths to reflect resullts as google takes time to process these data)

Should I remove all vendor links (link farm concerns)?
I have a web site that has been around for a long time. The industry we serve includes many, many small vendors and - back in the day - we decided to allow those vendors to submit their details, including a link to their own web site, for inclusion on our pages. These vendor listings were presented in location (state) pages as well as more granular pages within our industry (we called them "topics). I don't think it's important any more but 100% of the vendors listed were submitted by the vendors themselves, rather than us "hunting down" links for inclusion or automating this in any way. Some of the vendors (I'd guess maybe 10-15%) link back to us but many of these sites are mom-and-pop sites and would have extremely low authority. Today the list of vendors is in the thousands (US only). But the database is old and not maintained in any meaningful way. We have many broken links and I believe, rightly or wrongly, we are considered a link farm by the search engines. The pages on which these vendors are listed use dynamic URLs of the form: \vendors<state>-<topic>. The combination of states and topics means we have hundreds of these pages and they thus form a significant percentage of our pages. And they are garbage 🙂 So, not good.</topic></state> We understand that this model is broken. Our plan is to simply remove these pages (with the list of vendors) from our site. That's a simple fix but I want to be sure we're not doing anything wring here, from an SEO perspective. Is this as simple as that - just removing these page? How much effort should I put into redirecting (301) these removed URLs? For example, I could spend effort making sure that \vendors\California- <topic>(and for all states) goes to a general "topic" page (which still has relevance, but won't have any vendors listed)</topic> I know there is no distinct answer to this, but what expectation should I have about the impact of removing these pages? Would the removal of a large percentage of garbage pages (leaving much better content) be expected to be a major factor in SEO? Anyway, before I go down this path I thought I'd check here in case I miss something. Thoughts?

SEO Effect of Outbound Links
Greetings MOZ community: What is best practices when it comes to creating outbound links to other websites? Will adding such links improve the MOZ domain authority of my site? How many outbound links should be added to each page? For example I run a commercial real estate web site in New York. About 20 pages are written about neighborhoods. If several outbound links are added to each neighborhood page, and these links point to pages that provide further information about that neighborhood, will my neighborhood pages where the links originates from see improved ranking (or ranking potential)? Are these outbound links a critical SEO factor? Thanks everyone!!

Wikipedia links - any value?
Hello everyone. We recently posted some of our research to Wikipedia as references in the "External Links" section. Our research is rigorous and has been referenced by a number of universities and libraries (an example: https://www.harborcompliance.com/information/company-suffixes.php). Anyway, I'm wondering if these Wikipedia links have any value beyond of course adding to the Wiki page's information. Thanks!

Link Building Question
Hey Moz'ers, I have created several blogs on different domains for the purpose of writing good content articles that contain 2-3 links per article that go back to my website. Â It has been up for about 3-4 weeks. Â I am not seeing my results/links showing up in OSE, is this because it still needs more time or is there something else I could be advised to look into? In theory these blogs will only contain 2-3 links from each domain to the site. Â I was also going to make sure the anchor text per link is different (keyword, brand name, random anchor like click here). Side note: Â How does this system sound as part of one small aspect to link building? red flags? Thanks for all the responses and advice.

Link masking in WordPress
in Wordpress, I want to block Google from crawling my site using the primary navigation. I want to use anchor text links in the body and custom menus in the sidebar to make maximum benefit of the "first link counts" rule. In short, I want to obfuscate all of the links in my primary navigation without using the dreaded nofollow. I do not want to block other links to the pages - body text, custom menus, etc. . This would be site wide. I'd rather not use Ajax or any type of programming unless it's part of a plugin. Can anyone make a simple, Google-friendly suggestion?

Toxic Links; Their Existence and Their Impact..
We are constantly being asked about the existence of “toxic Links” and that they are damaging the sites of our clients. Apparently, this definition is being pushed down the throats of clients by other “Seo experts” trying to hijack our business. At this point in time, clients can easily be swayed as a reflex reaction to a drop in rankings. These so called “Seo experts” are clearly scaremongering for their own gain but I would be grateful for your opinion about whether automated, spun content from Seolinkvine and the like,  where the English may not be perfect (I assume this is what is meant by “toxic Links”) can actually damage a client’s site. Is it not more constructive to concentrate resources on dilution of keywords from the anchor text rather than waste time on links that may no longer be as powerful, or do they actually have a negative effect?

What is the best way to link between all my portals?
Hi I own 12 different portals within gambling, they do more or less work and feel like this one, Casinotopplisten,  what is the best way for me to link between all of them? Since there is alot going on in Google these days I havent linked between the sites at all, but i feel that to be a somewhat waste. So here is my three ideas so far, in ranked order: Add a menu at the topp right of the site, or footer, that links to the 10 different sites with different languages. The text link should then only be "Norwegian, Swedish, English etc.." Basiclly the same as about, but in addition linking to the "same page" in the other languages.  As all pages have the same article set for startes this can be done. Dont do any linking between the sites and only link to the sites separately from our company blog/site.. Dont link at all. I should add that all of these sites are on different IPs with different domains and all in different languages. Hope someone can add their 2c on this one.. Thanks!

Link Building Post Penguin?
I really am lost as to what to do these days.. The problem with my industry is the whole idea of link bait isn't very lucrative. There are no bloggers either, so guest blogging also isn't a very good option. Seems to me like the best thing I can do is just publish content! So, publish a lot of quality content? LOL, sounds like that's right up Google's alley. Where do you publish your content, and what would you say has shown the best results for you personally? We called an SEO company, Arteworks, a few days ago (Friday), and they really didn't go into any details about how they build links. We called them because I saw a post that you commented on, here, and it recommended a few companies at the bottom of the post. (Arteworks being one of them) Really, this is where I get so dang confused... The goal is to build links like the old days, except only use unique content, diversify your pages, and anchor text?
