Social Media Integration plugin switch
-
I am wondering what would happen if I switched my plugin for social media integration on my WordPress site. For instance, if I have been using Sociable for a long time and have accumulated +1's, likes, shares etc. and then I switch to Flare or Social Stickers, what will happen to all my counts?
Thanks so much! I haven't been able to find any documentation on this.

Thank you Christopher and Vadim. This is what I was hoping to hear. I like the idea that I'm not stuck with what I've got and am free to switch it up, but it was too risky to just play around with. I'm looking forward to checking out sharedcount.
I think it's pretty interesting that I couldn't find this information anywhere. Maybe I was approaching the search wrong.
Thanks again!

I have not tested this specifically, but yes you are right Christopher some plugins load faster then others in general, find that works nicely for you. Some thoughts here on this: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/social-plugins-that-dont-slow-page-speed
Also there are features like LazyLoad that load these plugins after your content or load in the footer, etc.
For me the social proof of having the number of shares next to the post for example shows credibility of the information. I would still like to have that in most cases.

Vadim, have you tested the performance of these buttons with and without counts? My testing suggests there is a performance hit.
Best,
Christopher -
Hi Gina,
A great way to think about this is: when you +1, like, share, or retweet content, it is counted in its one social network. So if you click (for example) Facebook share this article via your share plugin, your plugin does not count the share, but Facebook does, or Twitter, or Google+. So you are free to switch between social share plugins until you find one that suits you best.
One word of caution for plugins such as Discus or CommentLuv, they have their own counters and likes, because they are proprietary to their own platform and so if you have been using one commenting system and you switch to another those may or may not transfer. But for things like Social Sharing Buttons type plugins. They just pull the data from Google, Facebook, Twitter, Linked in etc.
You can test this with a tool like this: http://www.sharedcount.com/ for a URL
Hope this helps

I think the way these social plugins work is they pull the +1 and Like counts from the social media sites. That's why these plugins can be slow as they get the information from the other sites. So, if you change plugins, the counts should remain the same. At least, that is my understanding.
As an aside, I post the buttons on my pages but not the counts. My limited testing suggests that my pages load faster without the counts. I'd be interested in any other comments on this aspect as well.
Best,
Christopher

Facebook Integration and Keyword Density
Hope everyone is doing well! Long story short, we have been getting a lot of customer testimonials. We started putting them on Facebook and then we decided to start adding more details into the articles section of the site. The problem is many of our customers do not go to the articles section or the FB page. We purchased a plugin to integrate most recent Facebook posts into our website. We were going to use it on our homepage as well as our top category pages. I always run content changes through the MOZ scoring utility. After integration into the home page it dropped my score from a 99 to a 91. The first issue is consistent.... to many links... the second issue we got Rand's WTH are you doing face with a warning that we are stuffing keywords.... Not our intent, but the FB posts do have keywords in them. So for now we are testing the integration on just our garage floor tile category page but I am wondering the following: 1. In general does this type of utility improve UX 2. Does Google make some concession for 'keyword stuffing' when it is because of social media posts being displayed on the page? 3. Given that we post daily, does the 'fresh content' outweigh the increased keyword density. We are ranking top 10 for several major national keywords and we don't want to screw that up. But we want to continue to improve our layout and UX

Is there an SEO benefit/drawback to streaming social media to your site?
I understand how streaming social media, especially if you have a great social media community, can be effective in terms of capturing customers. However, I'm purely interested in knowing what it does for SEO. For example, does streaming social media make it look like your home page (or whatever page(s) has it) are constantly being updated? Or, does streaming g+ have a positive effect but facebook not so much? Or, does it have a negative effect for whatever reason that might be? Thanks, Ruben

How do your direct social media to use another picture when the web site is shared?
I set up a web site to raise funds for my nephew(www.helpmatt.org) and social media randomly picks a picture on the share. Unfortunately this picture is from happier times and sends a different message than we would like to prospective contributors. Is there a way to set the picture that is used when this web site link is shared on social media? www.helpmatt.org

Is it possible to get high page ranking with no social media activity?
I'm curious to know how much social media effects the chances of being more highly ranked on Google. I appreciate it's important to 'be seen' by Google, but if articles/newsletters are being written, does it really matter if a business isn't using Twitter or Facebook, etc?

Page Speed and Social sharing bookmarks - how to balance
I've been having some challenges on my page load times and am in process of addressing. Some of the issues are my pictures(so I'm in process of condensing), but part of the issue (according to pingdom.com) is my social sharing. I was using 1 click retweet, and when I changed this to Sexy bookmarks, it seemed to improve. But, I'm wondering 2 things: 1. Do you guys have any recos on which plugin is best to use and takes least time to load (I'm not sure if this is contraditory). My priority is G+/Tw/FB. 2. On my sexybookmarks, it's strange because visually, the plugin is not showing up correctly. Where the G+ button should be, it's invisible. Ironically it works, if I click on it, but a normal person is not going to realize it's there. Any suggestions? In case it helps, my site is TheFlooringGirl.com. I don't think the plugin shows up there, but it does show up at the bottom of all of my blog posts. Thx. I appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Value in content from website being shared across social media?
If I write content (small career advice quotes) on my website and I distribute across Twitter and FB I assume my site will get the full credit (from an SEO perspective) since that is where the content was originally uploaded. However, will I still get SEO credit for being active on social media, or will Google view it as duplicate content and evaluate that I am not active on social media? thank you

How long until Social Spam achieves the same notoriety/problem as Link Spam used to be
What are people's thoughts on whether or not social spam will become a major problem soon, just like forum profile/blog comment spam, etc, and what do you think the search engines will do about companies that are blatantly gaming the social signals game I.E. since social proof seems to be google's answer to combating anchor text manipulation and content farms, what do you think will be google's answer to combating the rampant social spam that will surely overtake us.
