Pointing Other URL to My Site? Good or bad for ranking.
-
A few years ago I purchased a few keyword rich domain names and set up some satellite sites. Spammy I now know.
What should I do now? I own the domain names for at least another 3 years. Should I point them to my main site or would that hurt my main site ranking?
-
I would not do too many of these, but I agree with Gary. As long as there are no penalties associated with the domains, owning them and 301-ing them to your website should be fine and may get some domain traffic when someone types theexactproductyousell.com
Having said that, I don't think this will do what you want. If these domains don't have links pointing to them or any authority, so It's not likely to do much for positive rankings.
-
I think that sounds absolutely fine on the basis the backlinks pointing to the URLs are ok and like Gary said, check you haven't received any penalties on the URLs. If you've done any blackhat link building on the URLs and you're planning on 301 redirecting them, you're potentially opening yourself up for trouble.
That being said, why do you want to 301 redirect them? Do the sites have regular traffic coming to them? Or have you done some particularly good form of link building on them?
If there's no real value in redirecting them, you may as well just leave them and cut your loses early...
-
That sounds good to me

I don't think the sites are associated with any bad mojo. I was thinking I would just change the DNS on the domains to send the traffic to my main site and then us redirect to resolve the URL into my main page URL. At lease until they expire. After that I'll let them go. In the mean time I've decided to invest all time & resources into creating value on my main site.
Anyone see any problem with that strategy?
-
the sites where originally meant for value and original content. However lack to time & resources made them just a waste of time.
-
If you 301 the domains to your current site, that is fine provided non of them have any nasty stuff like penalties associated with them.
It can actually boost business sometimes if they are good domains that people go to directly, does not happen often but it can do.
Many websites have multiple domains 301'd to their main site for brand name protection such as spelling mistakes. So its a very common practice.
If on the other hand you refer to linking I would definitely not do that!
Or you could build up the other domains with relevant content and save them for a rainy day if your main site ever got hit in the future by a penalty. Seems to be a backup plan many have right now as Google is in crazy mode right now.
-
Microsites can be done in a spammy way or a white hat way. If you have the time & resources, you could consider posting unique content on each of the mircosites and build them up as legitimate sites. They could even draw in search traffic. Then link them to your main site in a non-spammy way (i.e. no exact match anchor text).
-
What do you mean by pointing them to your main site (linking or redirecting)?
And if your concern is just because you have the inventory of domain names, shut 'em down if the sites are of no value.

Why is this site ranking higher?
We've put a fair bit of effort into delivering value here: https://lewescountycars.co.uk/ But a search for "Lewes taxis" or "taxis Lewes" puts this site above us: https://www.lewestowntaxis.co.uk/ As you can you see, this is a tiny site that we outperform in most ways.... what can we do to rank above it that we haven't already done? Thanks in advance - Gerard.

If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! Parked former company's url on top of my existing url and that URL is showing in SERPs for my top keywords
I have the URL from my former company parked on top of my existing URL. My top keywords are showing up with the old URL attached to the metadsecription of my existing URL. It was supposed to be 301 redirected instead of parked but my web developer insists this was the right way to do it and it will work itself out after google indexes the old URL out of existence. Are there any other options?

Young site trying hard, but banging head against the wall -- Site Review
Hi All New to PRO but we're seriously committed to getting this working. And firstly thank you to anyone who offers any useful thoughts and insights. We've launched a new site, unfortunately late to the market for the season and are really struggling to get search engine recognition. Site: http://www.ignitehats.co.uk/ We're continuously adding new content, slowly gathering more links and working hard to promote socially. But even on our clearest search terms like "Ignite hats" we're down on page 4. Both GWT and the Seomoz tools highlight no big problems (a few titles that are too long) but otherwise nothing. Maybe wrongly we requested that the Google spam team review our site incase it was being penalised, but got a template response saying the site was not in their spam system (phew, there wasn't a reason it should be we believe). We're wondering if this is just that our site is just too young? It's been live for 6 weeks. But worry maybe this is not the case. We've had success with another site we run much sooner than this. Any help or pointers would be really appreciated. Similar stories and what others have done, at least to give us some confidence to carry on would be great. Thanks for reading.

Hello, I have a website and working more than 1 year ago,I worked hard last year and paid alot to make guys write articles from my website to other forums so my keywords rank high and got good visitors, then I get in much care in SEO and found SEOMoz with is very nice, when I downloaded the tool bar it was a shock to find my website is almost zero although the big effort I had, I can do more but I need to guide what I exactly need to improve my website,I almost read alot of the beginner PDF and got good information to work with and can hire people to help too. I did a real big work sharing my subjects and i can see them in top#5 google but for other sites and now i found I am still zero 😞 adding my links inside also didnt help or counted. attached the statistics of the website and the competitors site to let me know which important things to take care to jump over. would be very thankful for detailed help, Best Regards 1_01308477251.png 1_01308477465.png
