What is the value in Archiving and how can I avoid negative SEO impact?
-
I have been very busy reducing GWT duplicate content errors on my website, www.heartspm.com, created on a Wordpress platform.
Each month, blog entries are being archived and each month is generating a duplicate description by Google. We post 2-3 blog entries per month and they don't really go out of date. Most are not news related butr rather they are nuggets of information on entomology.
Do I need to use the archiving feature? Can I turn it off? Should I switch to archive perhaps once per year instead of every month and how is that done? How do I stop Google from creating its' own meta-description, duplicates each month for these archive entries? Should I have the archive as NOINDEX, FOLLOW? I'm not the programmer, but I have some technical know how, so I have a lot of half baked ideas and answers that could use some polishing.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hi Irving,
Thanks for your reply. I will go ahead and speak to my programmer about implementing the NOINDEX, FOLLOW and Rel=Cannonical parameter. I paid Yoast for an analysis and of course they recommended their plugin.
My programmer tried to implement it, but he said the plugin did not work with templates we were using for implementation of local city code we have. Additionally, the Yoast team said their plugin doesn't work with forums ("as Wordpress doesn't contain a forum and it is unreasonable for the Yoast plugin to support another plugin." So we would have to back out code we have to integrate our forum into our sitemap. I don't know what we would do if we used the Yoast plugin. It was getting very complicated.

get the YOAST seo plugin and you can handle the archive pages by noindex, follow like you mentioned. If you allow them to get indexed you're just creating duplicate content. The plugins also allow you to set canonicals to help avoid duplicate content as well. Very simple to install and no programming background needed, although you might need FTP access to upload the plugin to the plugins directory.

Is there any benefit or negative impact to including schema for both @type WebPage and NewsArticle on the same page?
Is there any benefit or negative impact to including schema for both @type WebPage and NewsArticle on the same page? The websites I work on are editorial news sites. Our CMS automatically outputs WebPage schema to every article we publish. I want my dev to set up auto-generated NewsArticle schema. The are pretty much identical with a few different attributes. I just want to make sure I make the right choice about adding both or removing one.

Can hreflang replace canonicalisation ?
Hi Im working with a site that has ALOT of duplicate content and have recommended developer fix via correct use of Canonicalisation i.e the canonical tag. However a US version (of this UK site) is about to be developed on a subfolder (domain.com/uk/ & domain.com/US/ etc so also looking into adopting the hreflang attribute on these. Upon reading up about the hreflang attribute i see that it performs a degree of canonicalisation too. Does that mean that developing the international versions with hreflang means there's no need to apply canonicalistion tags to deal with the dupe content, since will deal with the original dupe content problems as well as the new country related dupe content, via the hreflang ? I also understand that hreflang and canonicalisation can conflict/clash on different language versions of international subfolders etc as per: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igbrm1z_7Hk In this instance we are only looking at US/UK versions but very likely will want to expand into non english countries too in the future like France for example. So given both the above points if you are using hreflang is it advisable (or even best) to totally avoid the canonical tag ? I would be surprised if the answers yes, since whilst makes logical sense given the above (if the above statements are correct), that seems strange given how important and standard best practice canonical usage seems to be these days. What best ? Use the Hreflang alone, or the Canonical tag alone or both ? What does everyone else do in similar situation ? All Best Dan

Suggestions on how to hire help with my SEO?
Hi, I just signed up with SEOMOZ and found some major duplicate content issues with Wordpress. I have installed Yoast SEO plug in but honestly am a little lost on how Wordpress handles it all and need guidance. I would love to hire someone to do some desktop share / Skype sessions to teach me the proper way to set this up but did not see if there was any place on SEOMOZ where employers and providers can connect. I am interested in more than just this one issue, looking for a freelancer ongoing to work on our site for SEO. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Force7

Site forwarding - seo friendly or not?
Recently i decided to change my domain name - and although i have written several useful and working .htacess files with 301 redirects, this one became more complicated by the fact that I went through TWO domain name changes, before settling on the second one. Having seen some issues with the browser not being able to interpret correctly the .htaccess file, i temporarily suspended the .htaccess file, and opted instead for site forwarding. I don't know the mechanics behind site forwarding, or whether it is seo friendly or just a method for ip addressing, a sort of pseudo domain name server record change.

I let it lie for a few weeks, until the dust settled, and yesterday put back the basic .htaccess file, with a 301 redirect, which directs the original domain name to be forwarded to the new one ( also it has a conditional in place to solve canonical issues). It works fine. But right now i am not seeing the link juice, the domain age, the domain page rank that it has. It has gone to zero, when it used to be three, sometimes four. I also made the change of address using webmaster tools. How long ( forever?) will it take to see my old page rank come back, even if it loses 10% from the change? And does site forwarding help or hinder seo ranking?0 -
New Forum: SEO considerations.
We're going to add a new forum to our website. We don't anticipate very large volumes of users. I read somewhere in The Art of SEO that forums should be 'built in bbPress'. I'm very much a programming novice so I'm still trying to get to grip with the basics of forums. I'd be grateful to know the main SEO considerations (however basic) that I should tell my web developer who is building the new forum.
