Backlink Audit
-
Hello,
I have a quick question for the MOZ readers about my companies current backlink audit. We've noticed many of the backlinks that the Google Webmaster Tool has found come from websites that are no longer in existence or have error messages. Are these websites counting negatively against us or should we ignore them?
Thanks!
Alex Rubin

Only if notified of unnatural links would I file a reconsideration request. Focus on building more links and creating new content.

If those pages don't exist anymore then they're not going to impact you one way or another.
Unless you've received some sort of unnatural link warning then I would concentrate more on building more good links and interactions than on spending time and resources getting rid of a number of links that you're not sure are hurting you. As long as you are continually building up your content and working to get good links and citations then the site should be moving in the right direction.
Lots of web sites have some "dirty links" and some sites do well in the serps despite outright spamming. A lot of the negative impacts I've seen has to do with tripping some boundary, so if you're working on the good links then you'll be walking back from that line instead of towards it.

Thanks for the response Craig! We are not going through a reconsideration request but we feel our site is not performing as well as it should be based on our content and link portfolio so we're hoping by removing some spam links from a past SEO organization we may get a boost in the rankings. Has anyone else seen an increase in rankings by removing spam links even if you technically had not been penalized?

If the pages are throwing a 404 or the links themselves are nofollowed, then you don't need to worry about them.
If you are putting together a manual link audit report for Google for a reconsideration request, I would include those links along with a column for link status and either set that as "nofollow" or "page generates 404 error" for those pages depending on the error.
If you're not going through a reinclusion request, then you can ignore those as Google will figure out those pages don't exist.

Is it better to have backlinks from domains with medium DA, UR, using same language and good relevancy, or backlinks from domains with high DA, UR but using another language and with less relevancy?
Dear all, while I understand that quality backlinks with high DA, UR, same-language and relevancy would be best, would backlinks with high DA, UR but less relevancy and using languages other than the one used in my website be something good? Or would they do more harm than anything else and still be outcompeted by backlinks with lower DA, UR but same language and/or more relevancy? Thank you Frank

Backlinks on sites that aren't relevant, how does google determine relevancy?
I have a competitor who I've talked about on here before about how they passed us in ranking for our main keywords and that they were a new site ( less than 6 months old ). Well after further digging a few things were found out: Our site seems to have a penguin penalty causing our keywords ( a group of synonyms as well ) from ranking better than rank 30. As well our competitor has been using this weird backlink tactic of using SEO sites ( a friend? ), a parent site to prop it up ( footer links and others ) as well has links inside articles that aren't relevant as in having a commercial niche page inside a lawyer site page talking about phone dialing. Then the low DA directory sites. I'm curious as to if penguin algo will catch them once it comes out, if not penguin a manual review would certainly catch their tactics, but this site is doing everything else other than proper SEO. What do you think?

Educational and Governmental ref. backlinks/domains
I have two question in my mind, decided to first time post and ask the community for better information. 1-How important Educational and Govermental Ref Domains/backlinks are? Shell we try to gain them? Or they are just like the others backlinks/domains? 2-When we break down the backlinks to Images-textlinks. What percent of backlinks should be images? (for info my website has 97 percent textlink and 3 percent image backlinks)

Backlink Lists
I am trying to create a valid list of backlink domain to disavow after a 50% traffic cut by Penguin......problem is I have now pulled lists from 4 tool and the lists are all different. I find a toxic domain from the tool run on LinkResearchTools and look on Google and Site Explorer and the toxic link does not even show. I look at the page and sure enough the link from year ago on a link farm is there. Is there really a rue definitive tool that will give me a list of all links? Better yet is there a tool that will help me evaluate which domain to disavow ? I want to follow Dr. Pete's advice and go slow but I am also anxious to cut ties with SEO work done by someone else in the hay day of link farm SEO and frankly looking at resent links some Bad SEO by competitors.

My Backlinks droped form 3500 links to 700 in few days
I know it's strange but this what happened : i had like to 3500 Backlinks from 600 different domains and in one week it droped to 700 backlinks from 260 Domains .. I believe these huge backlinks was there for just 6 or 7 weeks from directory submissions where i was nearly in all the directories sidebar as a new link .. Now my ranking droped from 1st position for more than 6 keywords( for more than a year ) .. to the 5th and 6th page where its just jumbing in the different positions for more than 10 days now and this for all Keywords .. and my question is it a google dance cause i used to has a good ranking with this few number of links and this huge number was there for just 6 weeks .. or shall i go wild to come back to this number of backlinks again ..
