Effect of temporary subdomains on the root domain
-
Hi all,
A client of ours tends to have a number of offers and competitions during the year and would like to host these competitions on separate sub-domains. Once a competition is over (generally these last for approximately a month) the sub-domain gets deleted and pointed back to the main site.
I was wondering whether this would have any effects on the root domain.
Can I get your opinion please?

Makes sense to me.
Thank you Peter!

Hi Daniela
That's almost correct. You need to do the wrap up in two stages really.
When the competition is over just have your "competition is finished" page active on your sub-domain say for a week with a link that people can use to go to your root domain home page.
But then, when you remove that page, because inbound links to your sub-domain would still be active in search engines and on Internet links, you still need to leave your sub-domain in place on your server for a time but with a 301 redirect active stored in the sub-domain folder. That would just need a single redirection in place that automates any visits to your sub-domain to your root domain home page.
After say a month or so, you will probably then be safe to remove the sub-domain.
I hope the above makes sense.

Hi Peter
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
So I shall suggest to keep the subdomain a little longer after the competition (generally this is a one-pager) with a notification that competition is closed and a link back to the root domain.
After a while the subdomain redirects (301) to the root domain.
Correct?

Hi Daniela
The only impact would be after a sub-domain is deleted. It may be better to leave the sub-domain active for a time afterwards so you can manage the knock on for pages that have been indexed on the sub-domain after the competition/promotion has finished. Also, any links that existed on the sub-domain to your root domain
If you left the sub-domain active you could then just have a single page on there to say something like "The competition has now finished" and directing a visitor who has linked there with a link on the page to the home page of the main domain.
All other links to the sub-domain pages and any resulting from it to the domain which are then redundant, could be managed through 301 redirects back to the main domain to the best landing pages for them.
I hope that helps,
Peter

Subdomain or subfolder?
Hello, We are working on a new site. The idea of the site is to have an ecommerce shop, but the homepage will be a content page, basically a blog page.

My developer wants to have the blog (home) page on a subdomain, so blog.example.com, because it will be easier to make a nice content page this way, and the the rest of the site will just be on the root domain (example.com). I'm just worried that this will be bad for our SEO efforts. I've always thought it was better to use a sub folder rather than a subdomain. If we get links to the content on the subdomain, will the link juice flow to the shop, on the root domain? What are your thoughts?0 -
Lost ranking after domain switch
I recently migrated from https://whitefusemedia.com to https://whitefuse.com. The website URL structure and content remained the same and I followed all the best practice guidance regarding checks on the new domain and appropriate 301 redirects. I have seen traffic drop by about 50% and the traffic that is still coming through is mainly coming through links still listed by Google under the old domain (https://whitefusemedia.com). Is this normal? Should I expect to see this bounce back, or is there anything I can do now to regain the rankings?

301 a whole subdomain to main domain
Hello, we have our website in two languages. The subdomain cs. for czech and main domain for english. Somehow this has caused google not to rank our main domain in local CZ SERP for many english keywords and we have not found out a reason other than it might think of them as duplicates or that we at the start had put targeting for the cs. domain to CZECH. (Its been 4 months, english keywords in Czech serp are easier and still it ranks them on the very last place, yet for example.com ranks them in google.com co.uk, fr etc in top 10) We will close our cs.example.com subdomain and use only example.com hoping this will not cause google to display only one domain and raise it in CZECH rankings. **Can i 301 redirect cs.example.com to example.com and all the categories of cs.example.com to relevant english categories. This should be ok? **

Buying Expired Domains
Recently i was looking to buy some good quality Expired Domains. But while performing site and links query on such domains in google, none of the domains are showing any links or pages indexed in Google but the same domains are showing hundreds of links in opensiteexplorer for that domains. So does Google has started devaluing expired domains or will expired domains recover all their rankings after re registration by us.

Domain Aliases
Hi there, I've got two sites mysite.com and mysite.org .org is indexed by google, .com doesnt seem to be. .com is used for some material that is sent out, and accounts for about 20% of incoming visotors. (80% end up on .org) Is there any positive or negative effect from this? Would I benefit from 301'ing the .com to .org?

Hi, If I want to serve a subset of pages on my mobile set from my desktop site or the content is significantly different, i.e. it is not one to one or pages are a summarised version of the desktop, should I use m.site.com or is it still better to use site.com? Many thanks any help appreciated.
