Sudden and dramatic decrease in External Followed Links and Total External Links
-
I'm not sure how or why this has happened but from a span of a week my client's site went from 518 total external links to 97. I also saw a dramatic decrease in traffic for that week as well. I'm new to the SEO game but I have not made any changes to their content other than importing old blog posts that did not get migrated to their new host.
Any thoughts? www.cobbcountyattorneys.com
Thanks!

Which tool are you using to measure backlinks? We did just have an update to Open Site Explorer, and it could be that there were links we crawled last time that we either didn't crawl this time or that weren't there this time.

It's possible that your website had a sitewide link on another website. That may mean it was in the "Recent Posts" category in a widget box or any other location that would be seen on every page of that site. Once that website added enough posts to push your link off that widget, you would no longer have a backlink on every page of that website. Therefore, your total links would drop dramatically. Furthermore, if that website received a fair bit of traffic, the link would no longer be shown to those visitors and ergo, the traffic would also decrease.
Hope that helps.

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Should I use an informative outbound link when trying to market a service?
Having outbound links seems like a marketing no-no as you don’t want people clicking away from your website. However, if the link provides great information (at the end of your content) that explains and markets a service that you’re offering, is it okay to have that outbound link?

No-follow value
While conducting competitive analysis and examining link profiles via OSE, one will generally see a portion of external inbound links possessing the "no follow" attribute. I am wondering what the latest general consensus is regarding whether or not these links contribute any link juice or page authority - enough to influence SERP positioning? Or contribute to domain authority? One of my client's competitors has several hundred more inbound links from external domains than we do. The majority of these are "no follow" links from pages of relatively low page authority, but the domain subject matter is quite relevant. The competitor's site generally ranks higher for similar key phrases. And so far, this is the only reason I can see ( I have examined and compared numerous factors ) which is allowing the competitor to outrank us. There is no doubt in my mind we have superior content and on-page SEO structure, so now I am looking at this purely from an off-page perspective to identify ranking factors. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

C Block Links in Open Explorer
Hi there, Wondering if anyone can help me with understanding the advanced reports in Open Explorer. I'm looking to create a list of competitors links to go after but don't want to create loads of links from the same c blocks for blog posts, articles etc. In open explorer it says my competitor has 451 linking C Blocks but when i download csv's using advanced reports with the filter of 'links that come from the same C block', the csv only has 26 links. The same happened with the filter 'from the same ip address'. How can i download and analyse the links so I can see all the linking C blocks and know which sites I want to use and which ones I want to avoid? Thanks, Ross

Analyzing Back Links - Says site A has back link to Site B but when I look at site B I can't find any back link to Site A. Why?
I am new to SEO Moz - It looks like incredible technology. I was playing around with different websites to see where they had back linked to see how it works. Looked at a site called racingsecretsexposed [dot] come and it said that it had dozens of links to www.ndesignstudio.com such as: ndesign-studio.com/blog/best-wordpress-sites?replytocom=893 with link anchor text "laying horses" but when I do a search for the company name, or the anchor text "laying horses", or the owner of the company's name on ndesignstudio.com - nothing appears. Why not? Isn't the back link anchored by the text laying horses, which should link back to the racing secrets website? Thanks
