How should I set up a domain redirect
-
A client has 2 domains that he wants to use for the same site. At the moment one domain is just an abbreviation of the main domain (not sure why) as follows:
www.mygreatpropertycompany.com
www.mgpc.com (just redirects to the above)He is complaining that when he searches for 'mpc' there are no results (at all) so I'm wondering what the best approach is.There is currently nothing on the main domain that refers to 'mgpc' in it's abbreviated sense - the only place it's being used is the company's email addresses (info@mgpc.com).
The redirect is simply a html file in the root of www.mgpc.com as follows:
Is there anything I can do to help him out? (this is one of those 'doing a friend a favour' tasks!)
Thanks!

if tppmc.co.uk has never been indexed and always (from the start) been redirected then yes...
-
Just wondering how it works when a user searches for the actual url as that is currently not showing in SERPs. so if a user searches for 'tppmc.co.uk' there are no results. Presumably this is due to the redirection?
-
Ah, I see... well the theory behind is still the same then
-
Apologies, I should have mentioned, 'mgpc' is not the actual abbreviation & www.mygreatpropertycompany.com is not his site - just an example of how it's set up. I didn't feel it appropriate to mention the actual site at this point. His actual site is www.**.co.uk, which redirects to http://.com.
An SEO company did some work for him but simply created pages from important keywords to get ranked and the content on those pages is very poor indeed.
I agree tho, it might not be that easy to get ranked for *****, might do a little more looking around and see what I can dig up.
Thanks!

why does he expect to rank for the term "mpc"???
I think it is not that easy to expect that you can achieve to rank for an abbreviation just by redirecting a domain that sounds similar. Even if he would redirect mpc.com this won`t do the job!
A website is ranking for it
s keywords or better for it
s unique content and the keywords associated to that. So if he really wants to rank for the term "mpc" then you have to create unique content that refers to this term. Turn mgpc.com into a landing page and create content that is usefully referring to the term "mpc" (cant see how this can be done!!!) or just focus the whole content of the website on that term ... that would be a possibility which I personally wouldn
t recommend.It
s tough to become an authority for such a keyword and even if your are successful with that you can
t expect to be more successful afterwards. Why should visitors expect this site when they search for "mpc"?The only reason to do so and which I can understand is that this has to bee seen in the context of brand building but this aim is much too high to start with...
by the way: actually the site is down or temporarily not available

301 redirect after penalty to domain which currently 301 to the penalised domain
Hello all, As I have mentioned in another Q&A, one of our new clients got hit by manual penalty. I checked their link profile and there was a lot of black hat involved. Long story sort, I submitted a reconsiderationr equest which was not enough as it seems 99,9% of his links are bad links. We took the decision to move a newly launched web site from www.websitename.com to www.website-name.com with the latter being an old domain name with good authority and clean link profile. The problem is that at the moment the www.website-name.com is set to 301 redirect to www.websitename.com and what we want to do now is take the web site off www.websitename.com and launch (not 301 as we dont want to pass the penalty to the clean domain) it to www.website-name.com. What is the best practise for this particular case and are there any things i should pay attention to? I would appreciate your advise!

301 redirects
Hello. Our site was recently rebuilt, and we switched from using index.php in all the urls to not using it at all. We also changed the names of many of our pages. So the urls have been renamed from "example.com/index.php/old_page_name/" to "example.com/new-page-name/". While we were at it, we changed from "_" to "-" as our word separators in the urls. In the .htaccess file, we have a small block of code that strips out "index.php/" from all requests. This code redirects a request for "example.com/index.php/old_page_name/" to "example.com/old_page_name/" For your information, the code that strips out "index.php/" is: RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^GET.index.php [NC]

RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} !/uSZWTLna/.
RewriteRule (.?)index.php/(.*) /$1$2 [R=301,L] Then we have 301 redirects from "example.com/old_page_name/" to "example.com/new-page-name/" QUESTION 1: Is this two-step redirect approach okay, or would it be better to skip the separate index.php stripping code and simply have 301 redirects that include "index.php" in the urls? QUESTION 2: Will we lose some of the benefit of the links that have to pass through a 301 redirect? QUESTION 3: We have 50 or so redirects. Will this affect performance of the site? How many redirects does it take to start affecting performance? Thank you!0 -

Multiple redirects a problem?
When product is sold out I will 301 redirect to a category page if a similar product is not available, but now our web developer has changed all the url's of the category pages so I need to redirect them all to the new category pages but that means there are some products that are first being redirected to the no longer existent category and then being redirected again to the new category page. This seems like it might me be a problem having two 301 redirects so I wanted to find out for sure if it is. Unfortunately our system for redirecting pages is archaic so it will be difficult and time consuming to go back and redo all the redirects that are going to pages that no longer exist so I wanted to get some additional opinions before I do that.

Domain with more Languages
Hey folks! I was wondering what you would do. I do have a Website. The website is provided in 8 other languages. Right now every language has it's own Domain name. The domain name is always the country in the language. I'm thinking about combine everything to one domain and hope to get some great linkjuice from the other 7 domains. So it would be www.example.com/en/ www.example.com/fr/ and so on. How do you handle that. Would this have a big positive impact on that one domain I'm forwarding to?

Switch domain from one account to another at domain registrar
We need to move our domain from one account to another at our domain registrar (which is Moniker). Both the "from" account and "to" account will be at Moniker. The "from" account currently has privacy settings enabled and we'd also put these in place for the "to" account. Has anyone done this and see any impact on SEO? Is there any big or common mistakes that I should be aware of? Thanks all!

A client will be translating their entire site into French in addition to English. For SEO purposes, should I host it on the same domain or create its own dedicated domain?
The current site is a long-standing site with good authority and a good number of links. Thanks....
