Should you use the keyword for your page in an image?
-
Hi there!
I am currently working on building up the SEO ranking on a page using a specific keyword - dresses.
Within this page, we have an online image library full of dresses which are then added to multiple pages determined by brand, colour, type etc for people to search.
I am adding hundreds of images all of dresses - I wanted to know if I name these images using the keyword: for example 'dresses_1, 'dresses_2' - will that have a knock on effect on page I am trying to build up and optimise for the keyword 'dresses'???
Any help is appreciated.

You need to title the images what they are, not focused to SEO. So if the dress is called the Summer Green in Fields Dress, the file name should be summer-green-fields-dress.jpg (or something like it) and then the alt text be Summer Green in Fields Dress.

This is great, thanks for your responses!
So putting my SEO 'best practise' foot forward - would you suggest only using the image name 'dresses' for a few of the images rather than all?
With the website I am using, the 'file name' also acts as the ALT tag. I've got hundreds of images to upload, but I don't want to use 'dresses' in every image name and ALT tag if this is going to have a knock on effect on the main dresses page I am optimising for this keyword..
Out of your suggestions - what do you think is the best way forward?

I agree with Travis here. I'd also add that it's important to use a wide range of descriptive language. i.e. summer dress; floral dress; vintage skirt etc. I find a richness and variety of language works really well rather than focusing too closely around a single dominant keyword like 'dresses'.
Build useful ALT tags for users who can't see images, rather than search engines, and I don't think you can go too far wrong.
-
When it comes to alt tags, I always err on the side of descriptive. The alt is used when the image link is broken, or if a plain text browser/screen reader is in use. I tend to think about it as a usability/accessibility issue.
I would go with something like "brand-color-dresses". Say "gap-pink-dresses". If you're not doing a dictionary attack on the alt tags, you should be okay.
-
I might question adding the same keyword with just a number as an ALT tag to the images might be flagged as keyword spamming. If you have a full page (gallery) showing 20-50 dresses to the user all at once, you'd also have 20-50 ALT tags that are basically the same. - So I'd suggest watching out for that issue. Perhaps you can tell when reading from a database, how many dresses will be appearing on screen and then just program it so it shows the ALT tag on only 1/8 of them or 1/4 of them, or whatever works out proportionally.

It is certainly good to use descriptive names and alt text for images. Partly because of google images searches that can bring in traffic extra organic traffic.

How can a keyword placed on a page with the Moz page optimization score of 100 be ranked #51+?
Hi, Please help me figure out why this is happening and what goes wrong. This is the example of the poor ranked keyword - 'viking cooktop repair' with page optimization score of 100 (http://www.yourappliancerepairla.com/blog/viking-cooktop-repair/) Yet it's ranking is #51+. I've got many like these: Page Optimization Score for 'kitchenaid oven repair' is 100 (http://www.yourappliancerepairla.com/blog/kitchenaid-oven-repair/) yet its ranking is #51+ And so on. According to Google Search Console, I have 266 of links to my site with variety of root domains. While building backlinks, I paid attention to relevancy and DA.What else do I have to do to get those keywords ranked higher? And why don't they rank well if the pages are 100% optimized, not keywords stuffed and I have quality backlinks? What am I missing out on? Please help!

Hosting images externally
In these days of CDNs does it matter for SEO whether images (and PDFs etc.) are hosted off-site? Does it make a difference if images hosted on Flickr, photobucket etc. Thanks

Image Duplication
I'm feeling strong! Ok, so can Google penalise a website which has "duplicated images" - coming from a completely independent website?

Excessive use of KeyWord?
Hey I have an Immigration website in South Africa
Technical SEO | | NikitaG
MigrationLawyers.co.za and the website used to be divided in to two categories:
1st part - South African Immigration
2nd part - United Kingdom Immigration Because of that we made all the pages include the word "South Africa" in the titles. eg.
...ers.co.za/work-permit-south-africa
...ers.co.za/spousal-visa-south-africa
...ers.co.za/retirement-permit-south-africa
...ers.co.za/permanent-residence-south-africa I'm sure you get the idea.
we since, removed the UK part of the website and now are left only with the SA part. Now my question is: Is it bad? will google see this as spammy, as I'm targeting "South Africa" in almost every link of the website. Should I stick to the structure for new pages, or try to avoid any more use of "South Africa". Perhaps I can change something as it currently stands? Kind Regards

If a permanent redirect is supposed to transfer SEO from the old page to the new page, why has my domain authority been impacted?
For example, we redirected our old domain to a new one (leaving no duplicate content on the old domain) and saw a 40% decrease in domain authority. Isn't a permanent redirect supposed to transfer link authority to the place it is redirecting to? Did I do something wrong?

Trying to get on Google page one for keyword "criminal defense attorney san diego". What can I do?
I'm trying to help a friend who is an attorney get on page one for the keyword "criminal defense attorney san diego." So far I've changed his title and description tags since they weren't optimized before. (SERP shows old title tag, however I submitted a XML sitemap through Webmaster tools to get the new title tags updated.) He also had a few duplicate pages, but I took care of that with some 301 redirects. I also added a h1 tag, alt image tag, and more content. I also spent a few hours building links for him. He currently has a page authority of 52 and domain authority of 44 with a decent amount of links pointing to his site. I'm wondering why he's stuck on page 4, when his competitors that have less impressive numbers seem to show up on page 1. I did look at his link profile using OSE and I'm worried that his old SEO guy got him spam links. His website is www.nasserilegal.com, however the page I was focusing on was www.nasserilegal.com/criminal.html Any advice would be great.
