Ranking dropped with no page changes
-
My rank for a keyword went from ranking #1 to #22. The page grade for this keyword is A, there was no site structure changes. The only thing I can see is that tumblr and reddit and other sources are now listed for this keyword and it's difficulty went from the mid-low teens to 28%. However, even given that, I do not a see a reason for this keyword alone to fall so far. It was giving us a ton of traffic, in fact, most of our organic search results came from this term for nearly two months. And 2 weeks ago for no reason, we were pushed to page 3. Has anyone else had similar experiences how do you counter it, and what can we do?

I am just telling you that I think Anthony's answer is one of the best ones out there.
Load time matters a lot you should look into what your visitors are seen by using RUM speed testing you can see exactly what any visitor had to deal with speed wise for free up to 20,000 hits a month
remember to add the RUM code to your site if you want to measure this.
that data can tell you if you need to switch hosting companies optimize your website code or if you're having no trouble at all.
Social signals from Google + tend to be more powerful than those from twitter and Facebook however definitely do not leave out twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn for that matter. All social traffic is a positive.
Have a good strong look at your analytics using a product like kiss metrics or mixed panel ( kiss metrics & mix panel is able to do track individuals) mixed panel has a free tier
looking at where people click on your website when it's visiting is extremely valuable. Crazy Egg is a fantastic tool to find out whether or not for UX for site layout is what's best for the visitor you can then use A/B testing with a tool like
Visual Website Optimizer to find the perfect layout to have your customers convert or sign-up do it ever does he want them to do.

I hope this helps,

This type of fluctuation occurs all the time. Google results don't stay static for long.
How do you get back on top?
-
Make sure your website is the best page on the web for that query. Truly think about how can you make it better for your users, not the search engine? Does it need to be updated regularly? Do visitors to your page show good engagement - can you improve it? Can you get your site to load faster?
-
Get positive signals pointing to your page. External links being the most important, social signals won't hurt.

Question about Google Algo Change on June 26
I have a client who's Google Organic visits dropped significantly on June 26th. I used a chart overlay called ChartIntelligence. It says that there was an SEOF update on 6/26/2013. Does anyone know what this update (or any other updates) would be? Also, where might I find additional info on this update. I did notice that Moz's algo change tracker listed a multi-week update on June 27, but I'm not sure where to find info on what types of things were impacted by this update. Any info would be helpful.

Does it impact over ranking of any website if their same content being used some other external sources
Hi Moz & members, I just want to make sure over website www.1st-care.org , does it impact over ranking this website if the same content (of about us or home care services) being used some other external sources or local citations places. Do those published same content create any ranking drop issue with this website's and making its content strengthen week? . As I was on 9th position in Google.com before, now it has slipped to 29th position. WHY? is there content issue or anything else which i am not aware.

Sudden drop in rankings and indexed pages!
Over the past few days I have noticed some apparent major changes. Before I explain, let me say this: Checking my analytics and WMT: There is an increase in traffic (even via google organic) There is no drop in impressions or clicks There is no drop in indexed pages in GWT Having said that; When I check my indexed pages using site:www.mywebsite.com, I see only 30 results as opposed to the 120K that I was seeing before (it was steadily climbing). The indexed pages have increase 3 fold in the past year, because of the increase in pages, updates, and products on the site. I see a sudden drop in rankings for major keywords that had been steadily rising. For example, I had some major keywords that were on page 7-8, not they are on page 20+ or not at all. Also, the page that used to show in the rankings has changed. I have only done white-hat guest blogging in the past year for link building, on a small scale (maybe 20-30 links in a year). They only other change recently, is that we are: Posting products on Houzz and Pinterest daily adding our site to all local directories (white pages, Yelp, citysearch, etc.) My site got hit by Penguin more than a year ago, but we have done everything right since, and our traffic via organic results has more than doubled since the Penguin release. What the hell is going on? Should I be concerned?

How do I rank higher in Bing/Yahoo?
We are doing really well across the board on Google, but having issues in ranking with Bing and Yahoo. What is different between the three search engines? I have read a few articles that Bing is happier with Flash, and they are more interested in Top Level Domain links, but what else is different? In Google we are sitting on page one for most terms, but are page 2-3 in Bing/Yahoo for the exact same terms. Any help would be appreciated!

Traffic dropping after blog was added...
We have a major client that gets over a thousand organic visits per day. They also self manage an adwords campaign that generates a few thousand clicks a day. Lat summer they got a new website with a blog. The blog has a couple of teaser paragraphs on the home page with the new blog posts, in addition to lots of static text about the items sold on the site. What has happened is, our organic traffic has changed form the main keywords of what the site sells, to things talked about in the blog. Traffic hasn’t dropped dramatically, but we have lost all our big keywords, for example, a keyword that was generating 40 organic clicks per day a year ago we receive no traffic for now, and much more obscure keyword combinations from the blog are being picked up. Is it the addition of the blog that is causing this problem, or the blog teasers that are on the home page of the site? We like the traffic from the blog terms, but we would like our former main keyword traffic back as well, how can we accomplish this, and what do you think has occurred here? Thanks for your help.

How Do Geo Rankings Work?
I know that's vague, so let me specify. I recently got a client on the second page for a relatively difficult 2 word keyword. That is when the location is set to Chicago, Il in Google and private browsing in Chrome (so I'm not logged in). This is great because Chicago is the more important location (the client is located there and that's what his location is when he searches in Google). But when he goes home to the suburbs and searches, the ranking completely disappears. Why would he rank in a much more desired location such as Chicago vs a suburb way out of the city? Is that something you can control or target in terms of optimization? It's difficult trying to explain why this is happening to clients.

Some rankings fluctuate dramatically
Hi guys, just a quick query this one. For one of our keywords, the rankings are fluctuating wildly. One week we went up 32 spots, then the next friday we were down 28. Nothing dramatic was being done to the site, I have not been trying to "force" any rankings instead focusing on just making our content better. It just seems odd that one week we're on page one, then a few days later we're down on page four. It seems impossible to actually maintain a reliable ranking. I know to expect some fluctuation but every week it's up 20/30, then down 20/30 the next. How can we try to give this keyword some stability? Ideas?

If a page one result for a keyword is mostly directories, do I have a chance to rank for this keyword?
I feel like although directories carry a lot of weight and links, I'd think that my client would be able to gain a top position, since none of the others are competitor pages, nor are the directories engaging.
