Help an SEO-DUMMY : ) Established hyphenated domain...redirect?!...new domain?!
-
Hello, everybody.
I am definitely not an SEO specialist. My family owns a transportation business (since 2010) and i am the one responsible for the website (until we find a good SEO company).
My question:
Several years ago i did not know much about SEO and have chosen a domain name www.airporttransportation-limo.com (it is not the actual domain...just an example...i'm not sure if i can post the real website here) and another domain that is just the name of our company (it also has hyphen in it).
Both websites are still doing good and we receive quite a bit of traffic, but i read more an more about how hyphenated domains and domains with more then two worlds can be bad for your SEO/business/traffic.
I feel like the websites are stuck and not moving up any more..could that be because of the hyphens?
I registered another domain that is the name of our company (which is well known by now) without any hyphens.
Now i have no idea what to do. Should i redirect both old domains (old websites are different and do not have duplicate content) to the new one, or should i just redirect the old domain (just the name of our company with hyphen) to a new one (without hyphen) and leave the www.airportransportation-limo.com as is... Or maybe i should register another domain without any hyphens (two words only) and redirect the www.airporttransportation-limo.com to it...
I am very nervous to make any changes and loose all the traffic. My family will kill me.
Please help! I'm lost!

Hi Karina,
It is unlikely that you are being penalised for having a hyphenated domain, but Google do say that hyphens, especially on a dot com, are something of a spam signal, so tend to be flagged, but that doesn't automatically mean it is going to happen, or has happened.
Moving forwards has a lot to do with your business objectives; do you want to build your company brand? What is the scope for moving forwards with the current domains in relation to this?
Unless you want to re-brand, I would suggest looking at the site first to see if there are any glaring errors, but I suspect it will be a lack of link / content / social activity that is starting to hold you back now.
There is also part of the Google algorithm that looks at exact match domains, but this shouldn't be a worry as long as the content matches the intent of the domain.
Have you done much in terms of link building to the site, and do you have authorship set up? There may even be opportunities to include some Schema / Micro Data to help enhance the site, but that depends more on the site and content.
Happy to answer any further questions.
Andy

Hi Karina! This is a little bit of tricky question, simply because there are so many unknowns. It doesn't sound like you're being penalized in any way since you are still ranking a little bit, but just aren't increasing in the rankings any longer. It has been my experience that with older domains, like your hyphenated one, it doesn't matter too much if it's hyphenated or has two words, etc. in it. Usually age trumps all.
If you just want to move your site since you already bought the new domain name, make sure to follow these best practices from Google: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83105?hl=en
However, I would be very happy to take a look at your site for you and give you a better and more helpful response. Just shoot me your website via a private message and I'll do some research for you and get back to you.

301 redirects
I am in the process of truncating many of the URLs using a plugin installed on Wordpress. The question is does google penalize or have issues with too many 301 redirects on your site. I have many many products I want to do this with. I thought I read somewhere that 301 redirects should be held to a minimum. Would appreciate any assistance

Effecting Domain Authority
I've taking an old brochure website and done 61 Pages and 10 Post pages On-page SEO and my Domain Authority is still a '1.' I've used Low Difficulty Keywords and gotten Grade A in On-page Moz reports. We've even keyworded 400 images - Alt text. My competitors have done nothing and they have domain authority at least in the 40s...... Am I doing anything wrong?

ECommerce Filtering Affect on SEO
I'm building an eCommerce website which has an advanced filter on the left hand side of the category pages. It allows users to tick boxes for colours, sizes, materials, and so on. When they've made their choices they submit (this will likely be an AJAX thing in a future release, but isn't at time of writing). The new filtered page has a new URL, which is made up of the IDs of the filter's they've ticked - it's a bit like /department/2/17-7-4/10/ My concern is that the filtered pages are, on the most part, going to be the same as the parent. Which may lead to duplicate content. My other concern is that these two URLs would lead to the exact same page (although the system would never generate the 'wrong' URL) /department/2/17-7-4/10/ /department/2/**10/**17-7-4/ But I can't think of a way of canonicalising that automatically. Tricky. So the meat of the question is this: should I worry about this causing issues with the SEO - or can I have trust in Google to work it out?

Can you set objectives for an SEO campaign?
We have been working with a client for 3 months and they've been happy with the progress we've made on their SEO and the resulting increase in rankings, traffic etc. They are renewing their contract for another 6 months but this time want to set some objectives and want us to suggest what those objectives are. Is it possible to set objectives when a great deal of the results can be out of our hands, eg, how Google works, level of interest in the client's products in the target market, whether they take on board our recommendations for changing their website content to get better seo results etc? What would other people be happy being set as their objectives for a campaign?

How is my on-site SEO looking like?
I know this is a broad question. My site's content has been written more than one year ago and haven't been changed so far. Our main goal is to make the application hosted in the site work better every day, so we don't worry much about writing content. The URL is http://www.onlinelogomaker.com

I'm trying to get rid of my Rel Canonical links and use the 301 Redirect instead.

References and SEO?
Hi Everyone, I am really new to the SEO world (having come from paid search), so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I noticed in Webmaster Tools that the top 25 keywords or so that Google thinks my site is about are keywords pulled from our references pages. Our site has a ton of authoritative content, most of which have corresponding reference pages with overlapping sources. Is this a problem? I am a little concerned that the keywords Google thinks are the most relevant to my site are really the least relevant. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! nina
