Ranking Drop and Google Disavow Requests
-
My website, www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk has fallen dramatically for the top industry search terms (nile cruise, nile cruises) over the last 12 months from previous page one rankings to page three which has very badly affected us financially.
I found, using Linkdetox, that we had thousands of back-links for non-related anchor-text, mainly porn terms, viagra, etc.
I have submitted a Disavow file and request about a week ago and wondered firstly if the enormous amount of these links would have helped cause the drop to page three and secondly if the Disavow request will eventually help the website return to better rankings?
Thanks,Colin

Hi Dennies and thanks,
I'd done a lot of on-page SEO to try and ensure that was as good as I could get at the time but you may well be right as it has certainly been a big drop.
The puzzling things about the drop is that the site has been in existence for a long time, it's a "genuine' site about Nile cruises with tons of relevant and useful content that ranked really well for so long...and then...bingo...massive drop.
Yet competitors who I out-ranked and who's sites are still the same remain on page one.
Very frustrating.

Hi Colin
You might also want to check your on-page seo and the technical seo side.
So aside from links, those might have also contributed to the drop.

Thanks Gregory,
I'll try the htaccess route too.
I've read that the bad links could be boosting rankings. It seems that the drop in ranking from page one to three may not have been a result of just the bad links.

Hi Colin,
For sure Disavow the bad domains that are linking to you (whole domains, not just pages). If you are comfortable working with your htaccess file you can follow the guidelines in this article to get those bad domains to automatically prune links to your site (assuming they are automated sites) by 404'ing incoming visits from those bad domains. This tricks the site's bots into assuming your site is gone and so they delete the links to your site. Works for some spa,,y sites, but not all. http://www.boxaid.com/word/simple-alternative-google-disavow-tool/
The sad truth though is that for awhile the bad links were probably boosting your ranking, and there removal (by Disavow, by Google's algorythm, and maybe by 404ing domains) will cause your rank to fall. You will have to build good links to replace the seething mass of bad ones...

Thanks Dave,
Looks a big task and I wonder if these spammy webmasters will take any notice. Hope that the Disavow request will help.
Cheers

Usually this is where someone has paid for back links and yes they can destroy your site rather than make it better.Try to build up site links manually.
Use the command links:www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk to dig them all out of Google. This may then be a manual task of getting them removed from the sites.
Good Luck

What are best options for website built with navigation drop-down menus in JavaScript, to get those menus indexed by Google?
This concerns f5.com, a large website with navigation menus that drop down when hovered over. The sub nav items (example: “DDoS Protection”) are not cached by Google and therefore do not distribute internal links properly to help those sub-pages rank well. Best option naturally is to change the nav menus from JS to CSS but barring that, is there another option? Will Schema SiteNavigationElement work as an alternate?

Fluctuation in Ranking for the keywords
We were ranking well for most of the keywords. These keywords were at first page i.e mostly @ 1st and 2nd position in Google. But we have put the following tag ie no index tag for our pages by mistake and after that the ranking fluctuated & fell down in Google search results as our pages were out of index in Google .We have removed the noindex tag after encountering the problem. Now I can see my pages are cached & indexed in Google after submitting to index in Google webmaster tool. Can I regain my ranking for the keywords and within how many days I would regain my previous ranking?

Google News Sitemap
Currently for our website Thinkdigit, we are using a rss sitemap (http://www.thinkdigit.com/google_sitemap/news_rss.php) for news. Please let me know is this the right format or we should use xml format only. Also we have lost a huge chunk of traffic from news search, Previously it used to be around 10,000 visit from google news, now it is just 300 visit per day.

Problem with Google SERPS
I am running yoast SEO plugin in WP. I just noticed when I google the client, none of their meta data is showing. I see that I had facebook OG clicked, which looks like it made duplicates of all the titles etc. Would that be the problem? I have since turned it off. I am hoping that was the problem. Also, when the client searches it says in the meta desc - you've viewed this site many times". What is that?

"Spam emails" : ranking drop?
Hello, Is it possible that a website gets penalised by Google because your hosting company blocked you from sending emails? Basically I got a message from my hosting company saying that they were blocking me from sending emails from our server and domain because too many had mistakes or were complained about. The same day we dropped from 2nd on a keyword to about 600th while still being ranked for other keywords. The drop was for our main keyword. Can the fact we sent “bad emails” be related to a rank drop? For the record, those were confiormation emails for account creation, they were legit, not spam. That's off-topic though.

Google Off/On Tags
I came across this article about telling google not to crawl a portion of a webpage, but I never hear anyone in the SEO community talk about them. http://perishablepress.com/press/2009/08/23/tell-google-to-not-index-certain-parts-of-your-page/ Does anyone use these and find them to be effective? If not, how do you suggest noindexing/canonicalizing a portion of a page to avoid duplicate content that shows up on multiple pages?
