What are the consequences of doing a 301 redirect?
-
Just recently we did a redirection from a website that is ranking very well. The redirection was done through redirecting the page of the website A to the related page of website B. Website B raked massive traffic in the first week and have increased its ranking among Google searches but recently the traffic seems to decline. Website A which was ranking very well before redirection is now nowhere to be found on Google search.
Is this a consequence of doing redirection? Please help.

"Website A which was ranking very well before redirection is now nowhere to be found on Google search. "
Hi - a question about this statement - did you just redirect ONE page from Website A to Website B, and now A is not ranking at all, and B is not ranking as well as it did for the first week?
Sorry, I was not quite clear on that point and need to be sure before answering the question.
Cheers,
Jane

Did you notify Google of the site move in webmaster tools?
You also need to remember that when you do a 301, you always lose some pagerank - it is impossible to create a new site from fresh and have it immediately start to rank the same as the previous.
Also check that Google has the sitemap from the new site added in webmaster tools. If the old one still exists, just delete it.

Hi,
I've seen it before that after a redirect from site A to site B that the new site will quickly be indexed and takes over the juices from site A but after a couple of weeks will suffer a bit. Probably because the site will still be seen a bit like 'new' to Google. If you keep on building the site and it's authority you'll come over this.

Doing a 301 redirect will pass authority from the URL that you are redirecting from. When you do a 301 redirect from one domain to another Google will remove the redirected site from its index once it recrawls the pages and find the 301 redirect - as your site that the redirect points to is now the new location of that site. You may find this useful - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/93633?hl=en
You have done 301 redirects at a page level which is the right move and this shouldn't be responsible for your sites traffic decline. Is website B still ranking well?

Losing referrer data on http link that redirects to an https site when on an https site. Is this typical or is something else going on here?
I am trying to resolve a referral data issue. Our client noticed that their referrals from one of their sites to another had dropped to almost nothing from being their top referrer. The referring site SiteA which is an HTTPs site, held a link to SiteB, which is also an HTTPs site, so there should be no loss, however the link to SiteB on SiteA had the HTTP protocol. When we changed the link to the HTTPs protocol, the referrals started flowing in. Is this typical? If the 301 redirect is properly in place for SiteB, why would we lose the referral data?

Tracking Sessions for 301 Re-Direct in Google Analytics
Trying to track clicks for individual slides on a homepage slider. I cannot enter UTM codes on the slide links, just choose from a dropdown containing pages on my site (WordPress). So, I set-up 301 re-directs for all the slides. /slide1-redirect

Mobile redirect causing traffic drop? Can I move analytics code to capture them as visitors before redirecting them?
Yesterday I implemented a mobile redirect as I don't have a mobile version of my site. As a result I've seen a drop in traffic which makes sense as my redirect script is at the top of the page. If I were to move the redirect script below the analytics code would that allow me to still track mobile users? Would this affect my bounce rate though?

Godaddy 301 redirect
Hi, Happy Holidays to all! Although, this is not Thanksgiving, I am very thankful for becoming a member of this site. I ahve learned so much. Here is yet another question hping to have answered by the pundits of this SEOMOZ: I have a site built on site builder and hosted on Yahoo Hosting which does not allow 301 Redirects; I was fortunate enough to have someone help opn this site explain to me how to use Godaddy (they are my domain provide) to 301 through forwarding, work great! My http://domain.com now directs to www.domain.com , the only problem I am having now is, on :sitebuilder" the index page is classified as index.html, thus providing duplicate content again. Can you do two redirects through Godaddy? In othert words, my http://domain.com/ goes to www.domain.com/ eliminating duplicent content, but now I have another URL - http:..domain.com/index.html how do i get rid of that to prevent dup content. Any feed back would be great, Happy Holidays! Jimmy

How to track and verify 301 redirects from 22 old websites to a new one?
Me and my team have just finished a website which will replace 22 old ones (6 main domains and 16 sub-domains, 19 in wordpress and 3 in Joomla). This means more than 20,000 links that we're trying to redirect with the most granularity possible. But we're experiencing a lot of conflicts because of the quantity and variety of links and the interference of Wordpress. And I'm having trouble finding which links are working and which aren't. I have a URL list in a plain .txt file for every website, is there a tool that can check these links for me? I've tested many wordpress plugins, but I didn't find a good one. Thanks!

How long after a redirect should we see results?
In mid September we had to so some redirects from old URL's to new URL's. We haven't seen a significant jump in traffic so we are wondering how long this might take before we see a change. We are the brand so we should be getting some sort of authority from Google, yes? Any tips that can be offered would be grateful as we are stumped.

301 redirects reduce traffic considerably
I recently identified an issue with our site whereby we had three different URL types for each article. As an example, we might have something like: /articles/my-article-name /articles/my-article-name.aspx /articles/My-Article-Name We've since taken action to address this by implement 301 redirects from the second and third formats to the first (so everything is without the .aspx extension and is in lower case). But the results have been disconcerting. Before the change, one of our articles receives 150 or so hits per day via the .aspx version. The other two existed but had very low traffic (1-3 per day). We decided the non .aspx and lowercase version was the version we wanted. Sure enough, when we introduced the 301 redirects on September 25th the traffic for the .aspx version just stopped (after a day) and the traffic for the non-.aspx version climbed. But not enough. After the change, the non-.aspx version is receiving about 60-70% of the traffic that we used to have on the .aspx version. So, instead of receiving 150 per day (to the .aspx version) we are receiving around 100 or so to the non-.aspx version. This pattern has occured across all our articles and, as a result, our site-wide traffic has dropped by about 40% or so. Since we are using 301 redirects I had assumed that the search engines would just update to reflect the non-.aspx version. I am sure I am missing something here. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks. Mark
