Google News not indexing .index.html pages
-
Hi all,
we've been asked by a blog to help them better indexing and ranking on Google News (with the site being already included in Google News with poor results)
The blog had a chronicle URL duplication problem with each post existing with 3 different URLs:
#1) www.domain.com/post.html (currently in noindex for editorial choices as showing all the comments)
#2) www.domain.com/post/index.html (currently indexed showing only top comments)
#3) www.domain.com/post/ (very same as #2)
We've chosen URL #2 (/index.html) as canonical URL, and included a rel=canonical tag on URL #3 (/) linking to URL #2.
Also we've submitted yesterday a Google News sitemap including consistently the list of URLs #2 from the last 48h . The sitemap has been properly "digested" by Google and shows that all URLs have been sent and indexed. However if we use the site:domain.com command on Google News we see something completely different: Google News has indexed actually only some news and more specifically only the URLs #3 type (ending with the trailing slash instead of /index.html). Why ? What's wrong ?
a) Does Google News bot have problems indexing URLs ending with .index.html ? While figuring out what's wrong we've found out that http://news.google.it/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=inurl%3Aindex.html gives no results...it seems that Google News index overall does not include any URLs ending with /index.html
b) Does Google News bot recognise rel=canonical tag ?
c) Is it just a matter of time and then Google News will pick up the right URLs (/index.html) and/or shall we communicate Google News team any changes ?
d) Any suggestions ? OR Shall we do the other way around. meaning make URL #3 the canonical one ?
While Google News is showing these problems, Google Web search has actually well received the changes, so we don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help,
Matteo

To follow up on this.
Look what I've found in the Google News Forum:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/news/thread?tid=248ef4e6fe372e91&hl=en
The problem is almost the same. Google News not indexing URLs with the trailing index.html.
The only person who answered was a Top Contributor suggesting to contact directly Google News team.

Hmmm, that is strange! Check a cached version of one of your URLs to make sure they new version is in the index. If it is, maybe you should switch to option 3.
I am not sure what if any the implications would be of leaving it the way you have it.
Since it is in 2 different areas of search I am not sure that duplicate content issues apply if you were to just leave it be.

hey Roger,
Look the CNN seems to have exactly the same "problem" as we do.
They have the "/" article indexed in google news and the index.html version on the non-google news index. They did exavtly what we did, putting a rel=canonical on the "/" version to the "index.html" one. Despite this the "/" version is still the only one showing up on google news
Here is the screenshot just in case
and here the two versions of the same article:
- http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/04/22/obama.campaign/index.html
-
They seem to meet these requirements. The only one that is a problem is requirement #3, but it clearly states that is waived with News sitemaps which Matteo said they submitted.
With that said I do like Matteo's option #1 better than the naming convention they chose to go with.

It does sound weird, but I am not sure that search operator works in Google News.
Here is a simple test. Search Google News for "Google"
The second story I see is http://phandroid.com/2011/04/22/will-spotify-be-google-musics-savior/
However a Google News search for "inurl:will-spotify-be-google-musics-savior" returns no results.
Clearly the story is indexed!

My hunch, and it's only a hunch, is that it relates to their URL requirements that the URL has to be dedicate to an article. An index.html page is usually not a page that would be dedicated to one individual news story. See http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=68323 for their URL requirements.

Hi roger and thx for the very insightful answer !
what about the fact that not a single URL ending with index.html is indexed in Google News ?
http://news.google.it/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=inurl%3Aindex.html
compare that with the normal google index
http://www.google.it/search?q=inurl%3Aindex.html&hl=en&ned=us&tab=nw
doesn't that sound weird to you ?

I had another thought too. Just because the pages say they are indexed in Google WMT, doesn't mean the new content including the new canonical tags have been crawled or added to the index yet.
I recently did a similar project adding canonical tags to an ecommerce site. The new URLs are only showing up correctly in the search results maybe 10% of the time, even for pages I know have been crawled and I submitted a week ago. The important thing is that more URLs are updated each day.
I dont believe they throw out their index the first time they crawl an established page and something has changed. I believe the index gets changed as they continue to crawl they compare versions and index data based on multiple crawl agregates, especially if it is for existing pages that have been in the index for a while. So in other words, if they compare 20 recent crawls and only see 1 version as being different, they may not throw out the old version right away until they crawl it multiple times and see that the the new version exists, say 5 or 10 of the most recent 20 crawls. BTW I don't have any data to back that up just my personal observation/theory.

If you used the rel canonical tag properly and only submitted sitemap yesterday, its just a waiting game. You will get crawled and indexed properly soon.

Weird Google indexing issues with www being forced
IM working on a site which is really not indexing as it should, I have created a sitemap.xml which I thought would fix the issue but it hasn't, what seems to be happening is the Google is making www pages canonical for some of the site and without www for the rest. the site should be without www. see images attached for a visual explanation.

when adding pages in Google search console without www some pages cannot be indexed as Google thinks the www version is canonical, and I have no idea why, there is no canonical set up at all, what I would do if I could is to add canonical tags to each page to pint to the non www version, but the CMA does not allow for canonical. not quite sure how to proceed, how to tell google that the non www version is in fact correct, I dont have any idea why its assuming www is canonical either??? k11cGAv zOuwMxv0 -
Spam pages being redirected to 404s but sill indexed
Client had a website that was hacked about a year ago. Hackers went in and added a bunch of spam landing pages for various products. This was before the site had installed an SSL certificate. After the hack, the site was purged of the hacked pages and and SLL certificate was implemented. Part of that process involved setting up a rewrite that redirects http pages to the https versions. The trouble is that the spam pages are still being indexed by Google, even months later. If I do a site: search I still see all of those spam pages come up before most of the key "real" landing pages. The thing is, the listing on the SERP are to the http versions, so they're redirecting to the https version before serving a 404. Is there any way I can fix this without removing the rewrite rule?

Google not index main keyword on homepage in 2 countries same language, rest of pages no problem
Hello, Two the same websites, two countries, same language http://www.lavistarelatiegeschenken.nl / http://www.lavistarelatiegeschenken.be The main keyword "relatiegeschenken" in top 10 of netherlands (steady position for 2 years) and in ** belgium** not in top 15****0 the main keyword "relatiegeschenken| but other keywords good positions, thats so strange I didn't understand and now every thing turned around suddenly: Now the main keyword "relatiegeschenken suddenly " not anymore in top 10 in the netherslandsits gone and other kewyords still good positions , now **main keyword suddenly in top 10 of belgium 2 years was not **other pages still ok. It are exactly the same websites and the same language. So double content But my programmer told me in google webmaster tools settings are right, so no problem with double content ? I really dont understand first main keyword in netherland in top 10 and in belgium not, now changed, now in belgium top 10 and not findable in the netherland on the main keyword. Maybe problem in code ? Maybe problems in code because websites are identical and active in two different countries wit same language ? No message about a penalty message in WMT, no spam links week i delete two strong but according to Linkdetox a bad links. I can not find a solution but its really important keyword that my customer want back in top 10 in netherland, like it was. All other positions and visitors are the same. Befor i have had this with belgium site, also main keyword google not index homepage. But suddenly no google show in belgium in top 10 Its turned around Kind regards, Marcel

Huge number of indexed pages with no content
Hi, We have accidentally had Google indexed lots os our pages with no useful content at all on them. The site in question is a directory site, where we have tags and we have cities. Some cities have suppliers for almost all the tags, but there are lots of cities, where we have suppliers for only a handful of tags. The problem occured, when we created a page for each cities, where we list the tags as links. Unfortunately, our programmer listed all the tags, so not only the ones, where we have businesses, offering their services, but all of them! We have 3,142 cities and 542 tags. I guess, that you can imagine the problem this caused! Now I know, that Google might simply ignore these empty pages and not crawl them again, but when I check a city (city site:domain) with only 40 providers, I still have 1,050 pages indexed. (Yes, we have some issues between the 550 and the 1050 as well, but first things first:)) These pages might not be crawled again, but will be clicked, and bounces and the whole user experience in itself will be terrible. My idea is, that I might use meta noindex for all of these empty pages and perhaps also have a 301 redirect from all the empty category pages, directly to the main page of the given city. Can this work the way I imagine? Any better solution to cut this really bad nightmare short? Thank you in advance. Andras

Web page is showing up on Google but doesn't show when it was cached, so is it indexed?
Hey everyone So I created a new page on a WordPress website, it was live for a few hours till I changed my mind & switched it back to a draft. Just out of curiosity I did the Site:www.example.com/Example search on Google to see if it had been indexed & apparently it had but when I click on cached to see what time it got indexed at exactly it's showing me an error. So does this mean it is indexed or not?

Google refuses to index our domain. Any suggestions?
A very similar question was asked previously. (http://www.seomoz.org/q/why-google-did-not-index-our-domain) We've done everything in that post (and comments) and then some. The domain is http://www.miwaterstewardship.org/ and, so far, we have: put "User-agent: * Allow: /" in the robots.txt (We recently removed the "allow" line and included a Sitemap: directive instead.) built a few hundred links from various pages including multiple links from .gov domains properly set up everything in Webmaster Tools submitted site maps (multiple times) checked the "fetch as googlebot" display in Webmaster Tools (everything looks fine) submitted a "request re-consideration" note to Google asking why we're not being indexed Webmaster Tools tells us that it's crawling the site normally and is indexing everything correctly. Yahoo! and Bing have both indexed the site with no problems and are returning results. Additionally, many of the pages on the site have PR0 which is unusual for a non-indexed site. Typically we've seen those sites have no PR at all. If anyone has any ideas about what we could do I'm all ears. We've been working on this for about a month and cannot figure this thing out. Thanks in advance for your advice.
