Title tag of product page including category keyword?
-
I'm doing some work on a site that essentially is about giving and getting reviews. It's heirarchy has categories and products within those categories.
For the title tag of the product pages, they currently have "Best {Category} | {Product} Reviews"
I've advised them that they should remove the "Best {Category}" part because a) they're already targeting the category pages themselves and b) from a user perspective, the product page should just have a title tag that makes sense for that particular page (the page is not necessarily the "best" and certainly is not a series of products within that category).
I wanted to post here to confirm that my advice is sound. Thanks.

if I understand you correctly, this sounds like an issue I am facing and this is what I am experiencing and maybe that can be of help. My site is real estate related.
Page 1 title tag: "City Homes for Sale" (page I want to rank for)
Page 2 title tag: "City Home Picture Gallery" (lots of original pictures and videos I want G to index in order to increase the amount of unique content from my site G is indexing, but I don't care much for - more a page for users to see beautiful pictures)Unfortunately, when users search for "city homes for sale" on search engines, often this Page 2 type will show (I have a lot of Page 2 types for various neighborhoods). I guess because Page 2 has more unique content it ranks well, also because it uses words "City" and "home" in title tag. I have now taken the word "Home" out of title tag and I look forward to see if it helps. Not just in terms of dropping ranking for Page 2 (which would be great), but more importantly will search engines be able to get the point that Page 1 is the relevant page. I am interlinking from Page 2 to Page 1 in a logical way with appropriate keywords. It should be crystal clear, but our supposed super smart / advanced search engines do not seem to get it.
Conclusion: As a smaller / less authoritative website, I would definitely be very careful with keyword selection in title tag, as my site has proven that it can work against you. Large powerful websites can get away with more of this I believe and search engines seem to understand them much better. Therefore, I find with SEO advice it is so important to consider if the perspective is in comparison to similar authority websites.

Great question!
I think that leaving the category in place makes sense, but not at the beginning of the page title. Having the category can help further specify what the page is about, especially if there are links on that page back to that category. Here is an example:
{Product} Reviews | Best {Category}
In this format, you are stating the keyword or phrases you want to rank as the highest priority, and having the category be secondary. If you don't want to include it, you could also use the site name at the end as an alternative:
{Product} Reviews | Product review worded differently - YOURDOMAIN.com
In this format, you have a higher density of your keyword in the page title, while not overstuffing it. If you have a lot of reviews that rank, this can also help with brand or site recognition.
Hope this helps! Keep in mind, optimise around the user, and what your best guess is that they will type. Check in your analytics account to see what phrases users are typing, and structure your titles around that format. The structures above are just best guesses, but the analytics data will give you a much clearer picture.

Can I replace categories with a static page
Hello there. I want to replace all of WordPress categories with static pages so that users see a well designed and constructed presentation of all the articles within each topic instead of just a long list of excerpts. I've already done this with 2 categories and although it is hard work I can't help feeling it is a much better thing for my users. However, I'm concerned that I am embarking on this project without being totally sure that it makes sense from an Seo point of view, or whether there are any downsides I haven't thought of? My idea is that the WordPress categories are set to noindex and nofollow. Search engines should find all of my static category pages and all of the content within each category will be spidered from there instead. Just to be sure you know what I mean here is a link to a normal category - https://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/category/consumer/ and here is my static page replacement for it - https://www.whitegoodshelp.co.uk/consumer-rights-appliances/ Both pages contain links to all articles within the category except the one generated by WordPress is just a long paginated list, and my replacement is a proper category page, which is hopefully far more useful . Can someone please confirm that there are no downsides to this strategy? 🙂

Google is putting brandname: in title tag
Hello, I was wondering why this is happening? In html for example the title tag is something like this: keyword 1 | keyword 2 | Brand name. Title is 67 characters.. When I search in google, I see the site but it shows brandname: keyword 1 | keyword 2 Is this bad? does this mean that google doesn't like the title tag that is in the html? I tried looking it up on google, but they were outdated and I honestly didn't really see an answer to what it means when this happens. Does the brandname: affect rankings?? Have any of you dealt with this, or noticed this?

Tags vs. Categories? What should I use?
I'm starting with a blog (self-hosted wordpress) and I'm thinking of the following content structure so that the readers are easily able to locate relevant content: Background: It's a blog which gives people relevant info about government jobs. To start with we will just be publishing information about these jobs but over a period of time also intend to post content that helps readers prepare for these jobs. In other words, right now it's just about detailed job notifications but in the coming months, we shall also post about preparation-related information. Typically, each of the job notifications can be bifurcated like: Jobs basis industry Banking Railways Clinical, etc. Jobs basis company ABC co. DEF co. XYZ co. etc. Jobs basis State / City City 1 City 2, etc. Jobs basis educational qualification Graduation Post-Graduation, etc. Now, I'm seriously confused how should I structure this data from the perspective of Categories & Tags such that it's reader as well as SEO-friendly. Do note that each of the government jobs post ideally falls in a couple of above mentioned categories. Thanks..

Should the title tag now be 50 characters long?
Hi, I'm fairly new to SEO and as a rule so far I have been making every page title around 70 characters in length, after analysing the a website that I'm currently working on in the MOZ tool it say's that the page title element is to long. Does anyone know if I should carry on writing titles 70 characters in length or if I should go down to 50, I have been using this tool (http://www.seomofo.com/snippet-optimizer.html) as a guide if you know of any others then that would be great and any advice will be greatly appreciated. Regards Chris

On-Page Report Card: Whats up with the TITLE of the page?
Started to fix the SEO issues on a customers website. When I run a "On-Page Report Card" It says that the title of the webpage:
On-Page Optimization | | maklarlabbet
www.visbymaklarna.se/visbymaklarna.html Is "visbymäklarna - Ditt förstahandsval på gotland." But if I check in the source code of the webbrowser the title should be:
name="title" content="Vi är mäklarna på Gotland som sätter människan i första rummet" /> (Actually this is with special encoding for the swedish characters. The title in coded text is: "Vi är mäklarna på Gotland som sätter människan i första rummet") Anyway the title of the webpage source code and the title of what SEOmoz reports is different. Why is that?0 -
I am optimizing title tags and was wondering if it makes a difference if I use "commas" in between keywords that are synonyms or should I use "and" instead?
For example: "pants, trousers at pants.com" or "pants and trousers at pants.com".

Do alt tags count towards on page keyword density?
Hello...I have written a bunch of content for my site using a useful tool called Scribe SEO which recommends keyword density at 5% if I remember correctly. So all my my newly written content is below this level but I am left wondering if by adding alt tags with my chosen keywords I will be considered to be over the limit and cause a red flag? Can anyone clarify this for me please?
