You can remove them via GWT as Chris has so aptly mentioned. Best way to do IMO.

The no index tag is its good if you do it to start with but it can still take time for it to drop out even after putting the tag in.

The quickest and most future proof is probably to noindex it through meta tags. Check out more details here.

Just to add if you in Europe you can also now use the right to be forgotten form - https://support.google.com/legal/contact/lr_eudpa?product=websearch
this is more for personal things but it's good to know.

Try setting 410 error code, you can also try removing manually it can take time for Google to remove stuff, especially if people are still going there or it thinks they are still working. You could also see if you can get some of the links redirected elsewhere on your site.

I have a few hundred which are all now set as 404, it's been a few months and they are still being listed and of course cached. Any help here would also be great.

just to let you know though just because you put it in there doesn't mean it will be removed its still up to Google if it does, I recommend you also block it via robots.txt as well and over time it will go if all else fails.

Duplicate pages
Hi I have recently signed up to Moz Pro and the first crawl report on my wordpress site has brought up some duplicate content issues. I don't know what to do with this data! Blocking Subdomain from Google Crawl and Index
Hey everybody, how is it going? I have a simple question, that i need answered. I have a main domain, lets call it domain.com. Recently our company will launch a series of promotions for which we will use cname subdomains, i.e try.domain.com, or buy.domain.com. They will serve a commercial objective, nothing more. What is the best way to block such domains from being indexed in Google, also from counting as a subdomain from the domain.com. Robots.txt, No-follow, etc? Hope to hear from you, Best Regards,

Deleted pages still registering as 404 pages.
I have a an all html site that I can only work on through the ftp. The previous marketing company ran a script that built thousands of location landing pages, but all they did was change the tags and headers and the keywords in the pages, other than that they are all duplicate pages. I removed them, but Google is reading them as 404 pages. How do I tell Google those pages don't exist? or do I just need to let the bots crawl it a few times and it will see that eventually?

Category listing page coming above product pages
A new SEO client we have taken on seem to be hitting most of the points right on with their site and SEO. However one thing that is bugging me is that their category pages i.e. "Footwear" which title tag includes the brands they stock. Is almost always coming up above (if they are ever even found) the product individual pages. Anyone seen this sort of things happening? Very frustrating.

To Reduce (pages)... or not to Reduce?
Our site has a large Business Directory with millions of pages. For examples' sake, let's say it's a directory of Restaurants. Each Restaurant has 4 pages on the site, each tied together through a row of tabs across the top of the page: Tab 1 - Basic super 7 info - name, location, contact info Tab 2 - Restaurant menu Tab 3 - Restaurant reviews Tab 4 - Photos of food The Tab 1 page generates 95% of our traffic, and 90% of conversions. The conversion rate on Tab 2 - Tab 4 pages is 6 - 10x greater than Tab 1 conversions. Total Conversions from search queries on menus, reviews and food are 20% higher than are conversions resulting from searches on restaurant name & info alone. We're working with a consultant on a redesign, who wants to consolidate the 4 pages into one. Their advice is to focus on making a better page, featuring all of the content, sacrifice a little organic traffic but make up any losses by improving conversion. My counterpoint is that we shouldn't scrap the Tab 2-4 pages just because they have lower traffic - we should make the pages BETTER. The content we display is thin, and we have plenty of data we could expose to make the pages more robust. By consolidating it will also be hard to optimize a page for people searching for name/location AND menu AND reviews AND photos. We're asking that one page to do too much, and it's likely we will see diminished search volume for queries on menu, reviews and food. I think the decline will be much more significant than the consultant estimates. The consultant says there will be little change to organic traffic. since Tab 1 already generates 95% of traffic. Through basic math, they're saying the risk is a 5% decline in organic traffic. Further, they see little chance of queries for menu, reviews, and food declining because most of those queries tend to send people too the home page or Tab 1 page anyway. Finally, the designer of the new wireframes admitted that potential organic traffic risks were not taken into consideration when they recommended consolidating the pages. Too Many On-Page Links
I recently took on a website design client and ran his website through a battery of tests using Pro to take a look at the crawl errors. One that seems to stump me is the error "Too many On-Page links" concerning his blog. (http://franksdesigns.com/wp/blog) This is the first time I've seen this error and am rather confused. The report says there are 104 links on this page. However, I'm having trouble grasping this concept or finding the 104 links. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support!

Do we need to use the canonical tag on non-indexed pages?
Hi there I have been working in / learning SEO for just over a year, coming from a non dev background, so there are still plenty of the finer points on-page points I am working on. Slowly building up confidence and knowledge with the great SEOMoz as a reference! We are working on this site http://www.preciseuk.co.uk (we are still tweaking the tags and content by the way- not finished yet!) Because a lot of the information is within accordians, a page is generated for each tab of the accordian expanded, for example: http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php is the main page but then you also have: http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=0 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=1 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=2 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=3 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=4 http://www.preciseuk.co.uk/facilities-management.php?tab=5 All of which are in the same file. According to the crawl test, these pages are not indexed. Because it is all in one file, should we add the canonical tag to it, so that this is replicated in all the tab pages that are generated? eg.
