Enigma of Google & China - Can you solve it?
-
In March, my team in Shanghai launched a site redesign of our English language website (targeted at expats in China) which:
-
Changed the URL's to be more SEO friendly (keyword based, shorter, etc)
-
Implemented endless scrolling to replace previous pagination
-
Changed some front end layouts
-
Changed page title and meta description tags to use keywords, be unique, use correct lengths
Since then, we see in Google Analytics, traffic form Google organic branded search terms has been steadily dropping (between 5 - 20% depending on the term). Not provided is down 2%. We do not rank for many non-branded terms, so have no statistical significance there.
However in Google Webmaster Tools, impressions of branded queries are also down, along with non-branded search terms (including those we tried to optimise for).
We see similar traffic drops from other search engines as well (Bing, Baidu) but not at as high a level (only 3% or so).
We have not changed any other marketing strategy online or offline.
We have tested / done:
1. Changing title tags
2. Reverting to old pagination (as we say in GWT a drop in indexed pages)
3. Checked the tracking code is working
4. Checked our rankings (we still rank position 1 for our branded queries and even some non branded)
5. Submitted new XML site map
The only large issue we could find is that from that day there were over 300,000 page not found 404 errors (which we are now redirecting by 301s as Google shows them to us, and have been doing so for 2 weeks).
Nothing is helping us so far, organic traffic continues to drop week on week, so I am reaching out to the Moz community.
Can anybody think of a reason for such a dramatic drop? Please help!

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the comment.
We are 301ing the 404's to appropriate locations.
By endless scrolling (also known as infinite scrolling) it's just the Facebook style news feed auto load of new contact when a user nears the base of a page. However, we have reverted back to previous pagination, this has slowed down the traffic drop but not ceased it.
Any other suggestions?

Hi there,
I would firstly ensure that you are 301ing the 404ing pages to an appropriate location - it's best if the redirect points to a location with "similar" content to what used to exist on the 404ing page, if that makes sense. Blindly redirecting everything to a home page, for instance, isn't technically what a 301 is meant to do (i.e. indicate that the resource has "moved permanently").
"* Implemented endless scrolling to replace previous pagination"
Can you expand on this one at all? This is a bit of a red-flag one for me, as it would be necessary to know how you did this in terms of on-page technology and whether endless scrolling is search-engine friendly. Good pagination can be very useful for proper indexation. A good guide to pagination was written by one of my former colleagues at Ayima here: http://www.ayima.com/seo-knowledge/conquering-pagination-guide.html

Google+ SERP Visibility For Non Branded Keywords
Hi, I've noticed that a competitors Google+ box is appearing on the right hand side of the Google UK SERPs for a non-branded keyword (open air balustrade). Please see attached image. I've always thought that the Google+ box would only be displayed in the SERPS for branded keywords. How is this Google+ box appearing for non-branded keywords? How can we improve our chances of our Google+ box being shown instead? Many thanks in advance, Lee. vDm914D

Where Does Google Pull the Photo From When You Search For Your Brand?
Hi All, In doing a search for our brand from our corporate HQ (Learning Tree), I came across a large embedded "ad" so to speak on the right hand side front and center of one of our locations (see attached photo). Clearly this is from Google's Knowledge Graph. We aren't pleased with the photo of a computer screen pulling randomly from our website...we are OK with the map listing though. Anyway to change this? As a note, when you search for "Learning Tree International" (our more official name as the entity as a whole - we have many locations around the world, and also one near our corporate HQ, which is the one that's displaying when you search "Learning Tree" alone), much better imagery of our logo is displayed. That's coming from our corporate G+ page. Any suggestions? Thank you. s0C5ZpT&hXaLhE7 s0C5ZpT&hXaLhE7#1

Anybody else seeing branded organic traffic decreasing and direct traffic increasing? Anything to do with Google auto-filling URLs?
If so, what could the reasons for this be? Maybe because of Google auto-filling URLs? Thanks for reading!

How to feature in Google restaurant reviews?
Hi, When I Google a restaurant name here in the UK - try "fat duck bray" I see the photo of the restaurant on the right hand side, the Zagat review score and then right at the bottom of this section there is "More Reviews" with links to Urbanspoon, com, qype.co.uk, Zagat.com and Blackbookmag.com (often TripAdvisor will appear here too.) To one of the sites I work with these are all the competition so the natural question is how would one appear here? I've never seen anything covering this before so interested if anyone else has read anything on this or has any experience on this. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Google auto-correct affecting one of my keywords
Hi there, I have a keyword "finao montreal" that used to rank 8 or 9 in Google serp. All of a sudden it dropped under the top 50 results, I was wondering why and I found out that Google now auto-corrects "finao montreal" to "final montreal". Finao is a well know brand of custom high-end photo albums and I find it strange that Google corrects it. Anyone has an idea on what to do with this situation? Is there a way to provide Google some feedback about the autocorrect?

Change Primary Image on Google+Local
My old logo did not fit well in the new Google+Local page and so I resized it and uploaded it a couple weeks ago using the Google Places admin tool. I have tried it on multiple locations but it does not show up on the actual Google+ page. The images do show up in the admin tool (so it wasn't that the logo didn't upload properly). I changed the description text to see if any changes were going through and those appeared after about 24 hours. Anyone been able to successfully upload new images to Google+Local?
