Best Link Data to Review
-
I'm performing an analysis of some of our competitors and was wondering what is the best link metric to look it?
Page Specific Metrics - Total Links or Linking Root Domains?
Root Domain Metrics - Total Links or Linking Root Domains?
Total links seems like it would be less important since it includes internal links from page to page within the site.

If a site over links to itself then they are most likely creating a bad user experience. When it comes to internal links, I would always but more priority on taxonomy and the user experience, the SEO would be a result of that.
Natural, diverse links from highly trusted sources is what comes to mind when I think about link building.

Does it really matter how many internal links a website has or how many times a website links within it's self?
Yes it does matter and while there is no rule in terms of how often to do it, there are a lot of good reasons to do so. A link is a link (mostly) when it comes to link juice being passed. A site can try to game rankings by overlinking to itself, etc.
I suggest reading about linking on Moz on the beginners guide to SEO, look at the Moz academy etc.
Good luck,

Well, I'm going to eventually be breaking down these pieces but I'm looking at much more than SEO for this exercise. I'm also looking at Design, Content, Performance, etc. I'm really just trying to get a high level view of who is doing what right.
I looked over my question after posting and I should have written it out differently. What I'm really wondering is, why does moz count internally linked pages as a "Link". Does it really matter how many internal links a website has or how many times a website links within it's self? It just seems like a useless metric.

Brandon,
There are a lot of reasons for looking at competitors, so I am going to assume you are not in a high revenue, highly competitive vertical where you are wanting to outrank competitors and need immense granularity. I would look at the LRD's and then how many links from the external sites. What are the qualities of the links versus your site and just as importantly versus other competitors. (remember, it is not you against them - it is them against them and you and them and the other one and then you against the other one....... I think you get it.)
If you are looking just to discover who is outranking and how, remember to look beyond the links. Content, structure, markup, etc.

Internal linking
Hi, I currently have built my website with internal links to boost my category pages (the ones that are the most important with the most traffic). Is the way to go or nowadays or doesn't it matter what pages you boost. I beleive what I did is some sort of "page rank sculpting" but is it still useful ? or I should I link natural across my website even though some pages will get a boost and some won't ? The link that I have are at the bottom of my content (not in the footer) but at the bottom of the page next to each other ? does they count or is it really bad to have them that way ? I have a blog and I was wondering if when I link from my blog page for example about "Barolo" to my page about "Piedmont" if I should also link from my page about "Piedmont" to my Barolo page or if the link only has to go one way from my blog / Barolo page to my piedmont page to boost Piedmont. Thank you,

Links not showing
Hi, we have been putting links to our website www.caffeinemarketing.co.uk from other sites we are connected to. Although these sites are up and running and have been crawled, the links are not showing up on mot. What else do I need to do? Is it anything to do with whether I put http://www. or just www. Please can someone advise.

Nasty links
Hi My first q on here (hoorah!), and it's about links (boo!). I've got what appears to be a handful (but worryingly, increasing in number) of links pointing to my site like this: http://condos.mrgulffront.com/florida-condos-for-sale/320-scenic-gulf-drive-miramar-beach-fl-32550-mls-567591/ I've made contact with the sites concerned, and had only one positive response who flatly denied all knowledge of it. The issue (as far as I can see) is that as in the above example the links (on the bottom right in the grey box) are forever changing so not always visible. Can anyone offer any guidance as to these kinds of nasty links.... I'm right at the v beginning on this "path of seo understanding" so please don't assume prior knowledge! Thanks in advance.... tom

Best way to build inbound links?
Recently I learned that there are links that are nofollow that google doesn't consider part of SEO. I was curious to know and also to help other new users what the community thinks the best practices are in growing your inbound links. Thank you for all the responses. I hope this link has served to help new users recently introduced to SEO and link building.

Finding links online that already exist as link juice based on search results
I'm curious about this, I can't find anything on the net that talks about it. I wrote an article about it on squidoo and have had no responses so I am thinking this is very rare subject. The question is I have done some backlink research with my competitors with linkdetective.com and found many links (even follow ones) related to sites that provide search results. Here are a link about what I am talking about as an example, I have found many more besides this one. http://search.lphant.com/es/webResults.html?q=free%20scrabble%20dictionary&hl=en&page=1&src=hmp_es&ref=1 My site appears in those results. When looking at the source there is no "nofollow". I found this page because linkdetective.com had this link listed pointing to my competitor. Are these valid backlinks? What I have been doing is adding these links to http://www.google.com/addurl so that Google knows about them. Is there something I am missing or are these valid?

Page links vs. domain links
Hello all, I am trying to find out how Google weighs page inbound links vs. domain inbound links. I have a domain with about 100,000 inbound links and am adding a new page to my domain which at this time has 0 links. I will be trying to outrank a competitors page that has 6,000 inbound links to the competitors page, but only has 26,000 inbound links to my competitors domain . Is there a formula or a way to know how Google values a page link vs. a domain link?
