Page 1 Reached, Further Page Improvements and What Next ?
-
Moz,
I have a particularly tricky competitive keyword that i have finally climbed our website to the 10th position of page 1, i am particularly pleased about this as all of the website and content is German which i have little understanding of and i have little support on this,
I am pleased with the content and layout of the page and i am monitoring all Google Analytics values very closely, as well as the SERP positions,
So as far as further progression with this page and hopefully climbing further up page 1, where do you think i should focus my efforts ?
Page Speed optimization?, Building links to this page ?, blogging on this topic (with links) , Mobile responsive design (More difficult), further improvements to pages and content linked from this page ? Further improvements to the website in general?,further effort on tracking visitors and user experience monitoring (Like setting up Crazyegg or something?)
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks all,
James

Heeeeey James Brown!! (In my James Brown voice)
I think you are on-point with your questions. Below are the elements I would address in the order which I would address them (not necessarily by importance).
Page Speed Optimization: Being that I don't know the page speed, page size, requests, etc., I would say if you can get the requests down as close to 40, page size down around 500kb and your page speed down to 1.4 seconds or less, you should be able to close the book on that aspect. This of course will ensure the users will have a fast experience and not get hung up.
Mobile Responsive Design: Based on GA data, if you have a significant amount of mobile users I would DEFINITELY get a mobile version of the site so these users can have a better experience.
Blogging / Link Earning: Blog, blog, blog!! Do this the right way (relevant, well written, targeted to your audience) and you will be building links at the same time.
HTML Validation: Fix any/all errors/warnings
404 Errors: Redirect any 404 errors that exist on the site. Also make sure you have a custom 404 page in case any new ones pop up moving forward. This helps direct users to the appropriate page.
CrazyEgg.com: I would definitely get this set up. Since you are a Pro member, you get to try it for free for 90 days. Why not?
Hope this helps you out!!

Hi James,
Congratulations, it sounds like you've done some really good work so far.
In terms of what to do next, I recommend that you do some in-depth competitor analysis on all of the sites currently ranking above you.
Look at all of the elements that you mentioned above and see what your competitors are doing in those areas. If you find that they're currently doing something better than you, strive to improve that.
Good research is the key here. Make sure to follow this rule:
Research - Hypothesise - Test - Review
Another important element to not forget is benchmarking. Ensure that you benchmark before you implement any changes, that way you can see what the overall effect is.
Hope this helps

Wordpress pages posts
Say you have a WordPress website with reviews and lists. Would you use "post" or "page" type for them? Is there any SEO advantage in using pages/subpages instead of posts?

How does this company rank this page?
If you Google the keyword "used iPhone 5," the URL ranking #1 in the SERP is the following: http://buy.gazelle.com/buy-used-iphone-5/ This page has zero content on it and a button on it that takes you to a category page with the iPhone 5 pre selected. My question is **how does this page outrank the sites products pages? **I ran a backlink analysis and don't see any links pointing to that URL. Also, **how does this site deal with its duplicate content issues? **If you look at the following URLs, you'll see a bunch of duplicate content in the "Key Features" section below the fold. http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-at-t http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-sprint If you think about it, this site will have different product pages for each variations of cellphone carrier and cellphone storage capacity. So for an iPhone 5, they will have 15 pages! Any insight into this would be much appreciated!

Should i redirect this page?
Hi I have the following 2 pages: http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning.aspx http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Funeral-Plans.aspx My dilema is that google sees the words "funeral planning" & "funeral plans" as the same thing, which might explain why the "funeral plan" page is not ranked v well. My issue is that the "funeral planning" page is at category level and introduces the wider subject of funeral planning, which isnt just funeral plans, so if i 301 my "funeral plan" page i will have no where to talk about funeral plans. My question is, Is the "funeral plan" page not ranked v well because of this or do i just need better optimisation of the funeral plan page so google is clear which is the key focus for each page? Thanks Ash

Worth contributing articles to a Page Rank 1 site?
My intuition tells me that it is not going to help with any SEO link benefit by posting an article as a guest writer on a Page Rank site of #1. It's a rather new fashion content site. The article would be informative and not a sales pitch. The only link is to our url home page in the bio. I've been told that links from low page ranking sites don't help anymore. But maybe over time the site will achieve higher PR status, and then the link in it would help us? Any thoughts? Thanks! ron

Paging Question: Rel Next or Canonical?
Hi, Lets say you have a category which displays a list of 20 products and pagination of up to 10 pages. The root page has some content but when you click through the paging the content is removed leaving only the list of products. Would it be best to apply a canonical tag on the paging back to the root or apply the prev/next tags. I understand prev/next is good for say a 3 part article where each page holds unique content but how do you handle the above situation? Thanks

Tumblr the next Squidoo?
What does SEO Moz think of all this SEO abuse that is happening on tumblr lately? I mean, it doesn't take much time to look around tumbler and realize pretty much every page looks like this: http://staff.tumblr.com/post/454906416/blackberry-app Below the post check out the "reblogged". With the correct settings in your tumblr profile, all you gotta do is click reblog on a couple tumblr pages and you get instant backlinks to your website from tumblr pages. Some examples from this page:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | adriandgaticards reblogged this from staff mymuffincorner reblogged this from staff contextual-links reblogged this from staff It's actually a followed link if you reblog. if you just 'like' you end up with a nofollowed link. Questions: Why is tumblr so blind to allow this to happen Surely google must be aware of this and devaluing links that come from tumblr posts? Thoughts? edit: 50 views and no responses. maybe my question isnt clear enough?

Why duplicate content for same page?
Hi, My SEOMOZ crawl diagnostic warn me about duplicate content. However, to me the content is not duplicated. For instance it would give me something like: (URLs/Internal Links/External Links/Page Authority/Linking Root Domains) http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110516 /1/1/31/2 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110711 0/0/1/0 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110811 0/0/1/0 http://www.nuxeo.com/en/about/contact?utm_source=enews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=enews20110911 0/0/1/0 Why is this seen as duplicate content when it is only URL with campaign tracking codes to the same content? Do I need to clean this? Thanks for answer
