Keywords going to Subdomain instead of targeted page(general landing page)
-
Why are some of my keywords going to subdomains instead of the more general/targeted landing page.
For example, on my ecommerce website, the keyword 'tempurpedic' is directing to the subdomain URL of a specific tempurpedic product page instead of the general landing page. The product has a page authority of 15 and the Tempurpedic landing pages with all the products has an authority of 31.
I have also noticed that my 'furniture stores in houston' keyword directs to my "occasional tables" URL! instead of a the much more targeted homepage.
Is there something I am missing here?
-
Ok as far as I understand your question, you are saying your website is ranking but for some keywords not the preferred page on the website is ranking.
I will answer as per the best of my understanding…
Ok this usually happens when you didn’t setup your website navigation and structure correctly. I would prefer to give another look to your internal linking strategy.
Another thing you can do is to get some quality links with anchor text around your keyword to your targeted pages.
Get an internal link from the ranked page to the page you want to rank in search engines against your key term.
I am not saying this will work 100% but most of the times it works for me…
-
You are correct about the sub-directory!
Sorry, these are the product pages:
keyword-flexsteel
keyword-flexsteel furniture
http://www.galleryfurniture.com/living-room/sofas/reclining-sofas/flexsteel-belmont-reclining-sofa
keyword-flex steel furniture
http://www.galleryfurniture.com/living-room/sofas/reclining-sofas/flexsteel-crosstown-reclining-sofa
And this would be the ideal landing URL for the keyword:
-
Firstly, I believe that you are mixing up the terms subdomain and subdirectory. A subdomain would be occasional-tables.example.com and a subdirectory would be example.com/occasional-tables, which I believe is what you mean.
There are a lot of reasons why Google could be sending it to a page other than the one you're attempting to rank for but it's really hard to tell without seeing the actual page.
-
Now you may be on to something! I don't know if this is the case because I was tracking 3 forms of flexsteel and each one directed to a different product page! But I can go into the products and add a parent link to the main flexsteel page to give it a bit more internal link value. Thanks for the tip.
-
Well you've got flexsteel as a keyword on two URL's. Google probably is putting more empahsis on the deeper page because it either existed longer OR has been crawled with higher factors for the keyword.
You may want to check out your other internal linking and make sure everything is going to the new product page. Chances are you have lots of internal links pointing to the deeper page, hence making it appear more authoritative on your site.
Check on that, then re-upload a new sitemap for a new crawl. Good luck!
-
Thanks for the response. I looked into that preferred domain, but it is not what I am looking for.
My issue is that keywords are being targeted to specific pages instead of general pages. For example:
Keyword- flexsteel
directed at product: /living-room/sofas/reclining-sofas/flexsteel-crosstown-reclining-sofa
instead of flexteel landing page: /flexsteel-furniture

You probably need to set your preferred domain in your Google Webmaster Tools.

See if that is what you are looking for.

I have been working in a project. Create a framework for multi pages that I have So here is the case

Most of them are single page product / one page design wich means that I dont have many pages to optimize. All this sites/ pages follow the rules of a landing page optimization because my main goals is convert as many users as I can. At this point I need to optimize the SEO, the basic stuff such as header, descriptions, tittles ect. But most of my traffic is generated by affiliates, which is good beacuse I dont have to worrie to generate traffic but if the affiliate network banned my product, then I lose all my traffic. Put all my eggs in the same basket is not a good idea. Im not an seo guru so that is the reason Im asking whic strategies and tactics can give me results. All kind of ideas are welcome1 -
Keep ranking homepage for target keyword, or switch to another page?
Hi Moz Community! I've researched Moz to find the answer to this question but nothing for my situation. I'm hoping some experienced SEOs can help me out. Here's the situation: I'm up against some fairly stiff competition for my main keyword - the front page is dominated by major manufacturers with high brand recognition and loads of money, where as my client is a much smaller manufacturer trying to compete. However, their DA is only 37-53 so not impossible to outrank... just many links and a significant advantage. We've honed in on a keyword that still drives good traffic, that's a great term to drive paying customers, and that we can get competitive with. My strategy was to attempt to rank my client's _homepage _for this term, rather than a specific product page, as I knew that they'd have many more links and social shares of their main site. (I've been successful with this strategy before). We've risen 60+ positions for the keyword in the past 3 months, to position 12, but we seem to have plateaued for the past month. We're ranking in top 5 positions for a number of our other keywords, so I know we're trending well. However, I'm concerned that despite our quick rise to #12, I may have made a seemingly fatal decision to rank their homepage for our target keyword term. After we had plateaued for a while, I did a more thorough side by side comparison and found that 8 out of 10 competitors on the front page have 2 main things we don't (and can't, because we're ranking the homepage)... 1- The keyword in the url (they're ranking for product pages, i.e. homepage.com/keyword-here/) 2- Their keyword comes first, or early in the meta title. Ours is _supposed to _, but as you know- Google can do what it likes with your homepage title as it's your brand, so they've put our company name- _then _the keyword we added in the title. e.g. Our Company | The Term We're Ranking For We've done a lot of work, and gained many reputable, high quality links, and we did see a significant rank increase across all our pages. My question is- did I shoot myself in the foot? Or is ranking the homepage still viable in this situation? If ultimately this is going to be impossible to get in the top #5 spots, what can I do to fix it? We've already gained a PA of 38 on the homepage from our work. Or would you let it go and just keep working at it, expecting that eventually we'll break onto the front page? Thanks in advance! Let me know if you need more info. I tried to be general with terms/site for my client's sake.

Targeting KWDs
Hi I'm looking into competitors for a high volume keyword and reviewing their top ranked page to see what else they rank for in this category. How is it possible that one page of theirs ranks for over 500 key phrases? They have a little bit of content at the bottom http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/homeware/storage-and-shelving/storage-boxes-and-drawers

301 from old site to new one , Should I point to home page or sub category page ?
Hey Seo Experts, I have a small website ranking for few terms like cabinets sale, buy etc . However what i have now decided is to launch a New website with more different products like living room furniture, wardrobes etc . Out of all these categories on new website Cabinets is one of the SubCategory . Now I do not want to have 2 websites . So wanted to 301 from small cabinets website to newly created website. Some of the doubts I have at the moment is ? 1 Should I REDIRECT 301 to sub category (i,e cabinets) which is purely related to Cabinets or Do a Redirect to HOME PAGE . As I also need more Authority to home page as well , as this is relatively new website ? 2 Second question related to this. If you have multiple sub domains does it divide the total authority & TF.Or it is just Ok to have multiple Sub domains if needed ? Any advice appreciated !! Thanks .

Should I build & try to rank several pages for similar keywords?
I have a client who's domain already ranks #1 on Google for 'automotive advertising agency'. However we want several listing on the first page. Should I create a few more pages like www.domain.com/automotive-advertising-agency www.domain.com/advertising-agency www.domain.com/automotive-advertising I'm assuming I can get these pages to rank well, but I'm wondering if Google will penalize us for this. Is this a good or bad idea?

NOINDEX listing pages: Page 2, Page 3... etc?
Would it be beneficial to NOINDEX category listing pages except for the first page. For example on this site: http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/101/fsx-missions/ Has lots of pages such as Page 2, Page 3, Page 4... etc: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aflyawaysimulation.com+fsx+missions Would there be any SEO benefit of NOINDEX on these pages? Of course, FOLLOW is default, so links would still be followed and juice applied. Your thoughts and suggestions are much appreciated.
