Which way round to 301 redirect?
-
Hi
We have just added a new layered navigation menu to our website.
so for example we had
Before : www.tidy-books.co.uk/chidlrens-bookcases (this has the seo juice)
And
Now: http://www.tidy-books.co.uk/childrens-bookcases-book-storage/childrens-bookcases
Might be a stupid question but do I redirect the 'now' url to the 'before' url or the the other way round
I look forward to hearing your thoughts
Thanks

From a system operations standpoint, here's a couple of tips about rewrite rules, especially if you are doing a mass rewrite.
When to avoid htaccess?
If you have 100's of rewrites do not use htaccess to rewrite each one individually. The problem is that every HTTP request passing through has to be matched against the rules. We recently had a customer's developers put in ~8000 rewrite rules - one per page. The result - the server queue filled up as every HTTP request was evaluated against 8000+ conditions.
If you have more than few 100 rewrites, consider either looking for a way to use regular expressions to dynamically rewrite them or use tools built into your CMS software.
Check your headers.
When you have completed your 301 efforts, you can use curl at the command line:
curl -I http://www.domain.com/
or use a tool like Redbot.org to check your headers to assure the 301 is correctly configured.
Trailing Slashes
I am not sure how or if trailing slashes impact SEO nowadays, but I noticed in your example URLs, they did not include a trailing slash. I have seen some CMS systems rewrite
This can cause a double 301. This is easy to miss. I've found this to be more common when changing CMS systems but something to check.
You may want to check out: http://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization and the trailing slash comments there. Since you are dealing with a rewrite, you may want to fix that now.

Hi-
Look into the built-in Magento redirects (catalog -->URL Rewrite Management). They tend to work much faster than putting all those redirects into an htaccess file (I learned that from experience)

The Now URLs are the one you probably want ideally so it should be before to now!!

Importance of 301 Redirects
Hello, I have been brought in at the last minute to consult for an e-commerce client who is about to relaunch their website. The site currently receives 8000 visits a month, 3100 of which are from organic search. They have a few thousand product pages. The web development firm they are using is changing all of the old product page urls and using 'search engine friendly' urls for the new site, which is expected to launch in a few weeks. However, they did not/are not planning on including 301 redirects from the old URLs. Other than simply stating 'this will be bad for your SEO', what would be a correct way of explaining to the client how much of a problem it will be if their new site launches without 301s. For example, is this a big enough issue to delay the launch of the site / get in a contract dispute with the web developer?

Questions about the Sandbox and 301 Redirects
Does the sandbox still exist? What if you have a brand new URL and do a 301 redirect from another website because the name of the service business changed? Thanks for any insight and help.

Creating a Target URL For 301 Redirect in Wordpress
I am confused as to what to put in as the target URL. Is this just a new URL that I must create a name for? I am having trouble finding any answer for this on the internet, just more people asking the same question. I am finally realizing that all the information is found right here at SEOmoz to both learn and ask questions about.

301 redirects & merging two sites into one
We have a client that has two sites that rank well for different searches in their market. The main pages ranking are things like advice articles and news pieces. For various reasons, they just want one site. I believe they need to duplicate the content from the outgoing site and place it on the main site, with a 301 redirect from each old page to each new one. What happens when they eventually want to redirect the entire domain? Would these smaller, internal redirects become obsolete, therefore removing any link value they once had? I am not sure how this works or if there is a best practice way to do this. Thanks Gareth

How long should I keep 301 redirects?
I have modified a the URL structure of a whole section of a website and used mod_rewrite 301 redirect to match the new structure. Now that was around 3 months ago and I was wondering how long should I keep this redirect for? As it is a new website I am quite sure that there are no links around with the old URL structure but still I can see the google bot trying from time to time to access the old URL structure. Shouldn't the google bot learn from this 301 redirect and not go anymore for the old URL?

Trailing slash 301 redirect code
Hi, I have code for redirecting trailing slash to non-trailing slash, which works fine: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^.yourdomain.co.uk$ [NC]RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L] (got code from http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/to-slash-or-not-to-slash.html) But I cant find a code for redirecting to the trailing slash version anywhere, and I cant modify the above code myself. Can someone help resolve this issue please, or point me to a resource. Thanks very much James
