Is link juice passed through a 301 and a canonical tag?
-
Hi all,
I am led to believe that link juice does not pass through more than one 301 redirect, however what about a 301 and then a canonical meta tag? Here is an example:
subdomain.site.com/uk/page/ -> 301 -> **www.**site.com/uk/page/
www.site.com**/uk/**page/ -> canonical -> www.site.com/page/
Thanks,
Chris -
Since this message is from 2012 ... and the initial question is similar to mine, I hope it is ok to pick it up again in combination with subfolder searchresults on mobile.
We are moving a website from Shoptrader to Magento, which has 45.000 indexations … yes shoptrader made a bit of a mess. Trying to clean it up now.
- there is a 301 redirect list of all old URL's pointing to the new
- one product can exist in multiple categories - want to solve this with canonical url’s
but mostly redirecting from category/productname to category/category/productname
Her comes the problem:
New developer insists on using /productname as canonical instead of /category/category/productname … since Magento says so.The idea is now to redirect to /category/category/productname and there will be a canonical URL on these pages pointing to /productname, loosing some link juice twice. So in the end indexation will take place on /productname … if Google picks it up the 301 + canonical.
My preference would be to point to one URL with categories attached ... since Mobile searchresults nowadays shows subfolders as well ... making it possible to show more than one result of your site. right?
What would you say?

Hi guys, the country subfolders will serve the correct country content by ip and also be geo-targeted in WMT and on-page metas. All of the English speaking duplicate content will then be canoncialised into one root page, consolidating authority.
Cheers

I agree - if you have setup your country specific subfolder properly with geo-targeting setup in webmaster tools then the duplicate content won't be an issue.
As long as Google can clearly assign a folder to a specific country when it crawls your site then you won't need to worry about adding another redirect or canonical link in my experience.
BUT it was clear from Chris' links that he was aiming for something like this, hence why I asked the question.
Chris if you are unsure what the best options for your international SEO are then I think this whiteboard friday is a good read for you - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday

I'm not sure geo-targeting (with webmasters tools or the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tags) will work through 301s or canonicals.
You can set www.site.com/uk/page/ to geo-target the UK, but just because you redirect that page to www.site.com/page/ doesn't mean that www.site.com/page/ will now target the UK.
Maybe I'm just being thick and don't get what you are trying to do
-
"I guess Chris is doing this as a way to target specific countries?" - Correct
Thanks for the answers guys, thats perfect
-
We must have been writing our responses at the same time - great minds eh Carlos. I agree with you about the fact that you could just redirect subdomain.site.com/uk/page/ -> to www.site.com/page/.
I guess Chris is doing this as a way to target specific countries?

Daisy chaining 301 redirects will pass link juice but each time a 301 redirect happens you will loose a proportion of your link juice which is not ideal as you want to keep as much of your original link value as possible. I would go down the route of using a 301 redirect and then a canonical as the second part of your redirect is essentially showing your preferred page with duplicate content so would make most sense in my opinion.
-
Link juice does pass through more than one 301 redirect, what happens is that every time it jumps through a redirect it loses a little bit of juice.
I'm sure you have a reason for it, but why can't you redirect subdomain.site.com/uk/page/ -> www.site.com/page/
Cheers

How to Set Up Canonical Tags to Eliminate Duplicate Content Error
Google Webmaster Tools under HTML improvements is showing duplicate meta descriptions for 2 similar pages. The 2 pages are for building address. The URL has several pages because there are multiple property listings for this building. The URLs in question are: www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3 www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan How do I correct this error using canonical tags? Do I enter the URL of the 1st page under “Canonical URL” under “Advanced” to show Google that these pages are one and the same? If so, do I enter the entire URL into this field (www.metro-manhattan.com /601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan) or an abbreviated version (/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan)? Adding a Canonical Tag to each page referencing itself?
Hey Mozers! I've noticed that on www.Zappos.com they have a Canonical tag on each page referencing it self. I have heard that this is a popular method but I dont see the point in canon tagging a page to its self. Any thoughts?

E-commerce site structure & link juice: Bouncing off an idea
Hi guys, Question from a new-comer in SEO. Summary of the situation: potential customers are searching for a generic product category (buy mountainbike) more often than a brand in that category (Specialized MTB). And the latter is searched more often than a specific product ('some specific product from Specialized brand'). Both the brand pages and product pages are not ranking good Then would it be a good idea to have the category pages only link to the brand pages? They may show the products, but the links wouldn't pass link juice. I'm not even sure if that is technically possible, but I wanted to figure out the merit first. I'm hoping this would support the brand pages to rank better as they take in more volume. Please do feel free to teach me!

Technical Question on Image Links - Part of Addressing High Number of Outbound Links
Hi - I've read through the forum, and have been reading online for hours, and can't quite find an answer to what I'm searching for. Hopefully someone can chime in with some information. 🙂 For some background - I am looking closely at four websites, trying to bring them up to speed with current guidelines, and recoup some lost traffic and revenue. One of the things we are zeroing in on is the high amount of outbound links in general, as well as inter-site linking, and a nearly total lack of rel=nofollow on any links. Our current CMS doesn't allow an editor to add them, and it will require programming changes to modify any past links, which means I'm trying to ask for the right things, once, in order to streamline the process. One thing that is nagging at me is that the way we link to our images could be getting misconstrued by a more sensitive Penguin algorithm. Our article images are all hosted on one separate domain. This was done for website performance reasons. My concern is that we don't just embed the image via , which would make this concern moot. We also have an href tag on each to a 'larger view' of the image that precedes the img src in the code, for example - We are still running the numbers, but as some articles have several images, and we currently have about 85,000 articles on those four sites... well, that's a lot of href links to another domain. I'm suggesting that one of the steps we take is to rel=nofollow the image hrefs. Our image traffic from Google search, or any image search for that matter, is negligible. On one site it represented just .008% of our visits in July. I'm getting a little pushback on that idea as having a separate image server is standard for many websites, so I thought I'd seek additional information and opinions. Thanks!

Canonical Tag for Pages with Less Content
I am considering using a cross-domain canonical tag for pages that are very similar but one has less content than the other. The domains are geo specific, so for example. www.page.com - with content xxx, yyy, zzz, and www.page.fr with content xxx is this a problem because while there is clearly duplicate content here the pages are not actually significantly similar since there is so much less content on one page than the other?

Link Request Email on Site`s Link Pages
Hello I have assembled a list of web-sites that have "Links" section that has a list of persons` favorite tools. Those pages have a link to my competitor. I know my tool is just as good if not better and want to request a link. I`m thinking of sending an email asking for a link and offering a small amount of money for it. Questions: A) How much should I offer? Should I offer anything at all B) Is there an email style that someone can suggest that has been tested and proven to work for this type of situtation?
