XML Sitemaps settings for simple websites

We have numerous simple websites that are not updated very often (maybe once every 12-18 months). We are trying to create the perfect XML sitemap for them. Which brings me to my 2 questions:-
1. Should we include the "lastmod" tag in the XML sitemap?
2. What would you set the "changefreq" at? Once a month?
Remember these sites are never updated as they are simple sites for industry sectors such as building and property maintenance. Please justify your answer and explain why as we are trying to understand.

Great Answer! So for your larger sites - what structure do you use for your XML sitemaps? Focus on loc, priority and changefreq?
Also is there a risk if a lastmod date is left to be 12-18 months old the search engines may start penalising the site as they deem its out of date or am I assuming they will do this by analysing the cached copies and seeing there have been no changes? Does lastmod only really benefit sites that update frequently (even daily) and for sites with static content it should be left off?
I do have a further question about large ecommerce sites - is it best practice to have a one XML sitemap for the main pages and top level categories and then a separate XML sitemap for the products (I'm thinking for a site with 500 products.

Unless the sites are very big - I don't see a reason for those type of sites to even have xml sitemaps. Now for sure those won't hurt - but they won't provide a positive ROI anyway.
I would first look in Web Master Tools to see what is the crawling rate - and if it's very low, then yes, it might help pushing some xml sitemaps to try and speed the process.
Also remember that lastmod and changefreq are just hints - Google might use them as some addon info but changes are small - for a site that doesn’t get updated that often - for google to take those into account.
Now let's assume you will add the xml sitemaps and you will add changefreq at one month - google might have a crawling cycle for this site - once a day for the main pages (home page and that's it or some additional 1-2 pages in the site that are "more important" and for the rest maybe google bot will visit them once a week, once a month or even once every few months - depending on how old is the site and the history of the site ...). Let's assume Google will take into account your changefreq settings - and it will visit more often as he might think you are up to something .. as in adding more content ... when the bot will see there is nothing there he will resume his old crawling cycle anyway.
Again, you can put changefreq once a day - it won't back fire in any way - is just that google bot will ignore that...

Whats the best way to set up a directory listing website
Hello all, I am building a website that lists homeschool events and field trips across various states (locker-time.com) and I have a few questions on setting it up correctly. Both the events and field trips are searchable by distance. For clarification, events are associated with a specific date and time and field trips are not. I currently have a link that says homeschool events and you enter your zip to find things close by. Is it better to create a separate page for each state I am targeting instead? So the link would be homeschool events and then a sub-link that says homeschool events in GA and the GA page brings up all the events in GA, still searchable by zip. Or does it matter? I was thinking if its a separate page, I could put keyword rich copy on top, but then clicking on the menu and choosing the appropriate sub-menu is an additional step for users on the site and as the number of states increase, that sub-menu could get pretty big. The search results pages lists the post title of any events or field trips found and the links go to a page on my website with more information, such as the location, details on the event / field trip and a link to their website. I am wondering for SEO purposes, is this the right way to do it? Or I could set up the results page to show an excerpt and some listing info and then link directly to their website. Does it matter? I was thinking a page on my own website since then I could add images (but that might end up sucking up all my hosting space). As I am adding these listings to my website, I simply copied/pasted the details on the event. Now that I'm thinking about it, original content is best, so should I stop doing that and rewrite the description in my own words? Since the events are date specific events and when they pass, they are no longer on the site, does it matter as much for the events? The field trips do not have dates associated with them, so I can probably work on creating my own descriptions for those. Just not sure if I should bother with events that are more short term. Website Redirection Issue
Hi All, Like to know is there any better way to do 301 redirection. My Client whose website name is Online Plants created with OpenCart. Over the period of time he added nearly 10,000's of products and now he is cleaning them ( by grouping similar attribute under one products) which is right way to do. For example , Product A with different size ( X,XL,XXL ) previously had 3 product entry ( A - X, A - XL, A - XXL ) , now he is moving all of them under one. So while moving he is deleting the other two entry. Now whats the best way to inform google . Putting a manual 301 redirection for each and every product is impossible as there are more products. Whats the best way to go ahead on this.

I also have added the instance of morganlindsayphotography.com (non www version) My blog is located at www.morganlindsayphotography.com/blog/ My question is do I add a sitemap to the "<a>www.morganlindsayphotography.com/blog/</a>" as well as the <a>www.morganlindsayphotography.com</a> ? A new website issue
Hello everybody,

I have started a new website 22 days ago at the beginning of this month and i have long articles. I think this should make the site appear in search results for long tail keywords even if they are not very relevant but as you can see in the attached image from my webmaster tools the impression count has suddenly increased to 100 then significantly decreased again. Even when i cancel "filter" option. Is this normal for a 3 weeks old website? or there is something i have to check? thanks. cLMa04l.jpg0 -
How important is the optional <priority>tag in an XML sitemap of your website? Can this help search engines understand the hierarchy of a website?</priority>

302 redirects in the sitemap?
My website uses a prefix at the end to instruct the back-end about visitor details. The setup is similar to this site - http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=sf with a 302 redirect from the normal link to the one with additional info and a canonical tag on the actual URL without the extra info ((the normal one here being http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com,) However, when I used www.xml-sitemaps.com to create a sitemap they did so using the URLs with the extra info on the links... what should I do to create a sitemap using the normal URLs (which are the ones I want to be promoting)

Mobile Sitemap Issue
Hi there, I am having some difficulty with an error on Webmaster Tools. I'm concerned with a possible duplicate content penalty following the launch of my mobile site. I have attempted to update my sitemap to inform Google that a different mobile page exists in addition to the desktop page. I have followed Google's guidelines as outlined here:

Webmaster tools is reporting that it is not able to read the file and when I validate it I am getting an error stating that the 'Namespace prefix xhtml on link is not defined'.
