Yoast settings for ecommerce site
-
Hello,
I can't find the answer anywhere so I wonder if someone here could help?
The ecommerce site I have has Yoast and Woocommerce installed.
The Post Types tab under Titles and Metas has various options:
Posts, pages, media, products, gift cards.
There is also custom post type archives for products and gift cards.
Should i noindex the media and also the custom post type archives for product and gift cards and if so why?
What about the taxonomies for ecommerce? What's best practise? Noindex?
I understand the settings for Yoast when its not an ecommerce site but this has kind of thrown me.
Thanks

Yoast has an ecommerce plugin so use that.
It has a bit more functions specifically for ecommerce sites.
To answer the 2 questions:
Should i noindex the media and also the custom post type archives for product and gift cards and if so why?
- noindex is fine
What about the taxonomies for ecommerce? What's best practise? Noindex?
- noindex is also fine
On the sites I've worked with using that setup, those worked out fine.

Hey
Let me try and help a little here.
Firstly, the main reason you won't find an answer with regards to the specifics of Yoast WordPress SEO & WooCommerce is that is the wrong question to ask to some degree. The reason for this is that every site is unique and the WordPress SEO plugin is just a tool to help deal with the typical problems we see in SEO which is largely internal duplicate content.
Lets consider a typical WordPress blog and how the tool helps there. In a single user scenario as most blogs are we have the homepage, the author page and the date archives which are going to be largely the same. So, WordPress SEO allows us to noindex or disable the author archives, to noindex the date archives and just leave the homepage with good solid unique content.
Lets apply this to tags and categories - many sites have an SEO tag and an SEO category. Using the tools in the plugin we can choose to noindex Tags so again we can cut down on that potential duplication.
So how does this apply to your site? Well, we need to identify the potential problem areas and how we can use the plugin to address those problems.
- Uniqueness / Duplication - what areas of duplication exist?
- What areas of the site are potentially low or lower quality?
- What areas of the site are not useful as search landing pages?
The tool allows you to make broad brush strokes and noindex whole categories / tags / taxonomies but it also allows for granular control in the advanced settings of each entity and allows you to noindex individual pages, set canonicals, redirections etc. Ultimately, you need to audit the site, find the problem areas and use the tools at your disposal to implement the changes that are unique to your situation.
There are areas that the tool may not be able to help fully as well and it is prudent to crawl the site and optimise for crawl efficiency. WooCommerce and most ecommerce platforms in general can generate a lot of comparison type pages that can take a site with a few thousand products up to a million URLs - this creates a quality content needle in a largely duplicate content haystack problem so be sure to take this into consideration. Webmaster tools and robots.txt can be your friends here (ignore certain URL variables, block in robots). Yoast can help here sometimes as well with some nofollows but again, you need to identify the issues specific to your own site.
I am sorry that is not a do x, y and z kind of answer but in these situations it is rarely that simple and the WordPress SEO plugin is just a tool we can use to resolve problems that are unique to the individual site.
Hope that helps!
Marcus

Hi Mozers, is the AMP project is supposed to be an SEO factor on mobile platforms? Also, can it be used on ecommerce sites such as Magento or Shopify as well? Thanks!
It stands to reason that Google will favor early adopters of Accelerated Mobile Pages, but it seems heavily geared toward news publishers so far. What about regular Wordpress sites, or ecommerce sites like Shopify, should AMP be pursued on that type of CMS?

How to set up redirects with a company takeover
Hi there, We are about to take over a player in the market with some good DA en PA's. We choose to redirect all the pages from the domain we take over to our main domain for now, later we want to redirect all categories to relevant and similar categories on our own domain. The company we take over is using a server which will be cancelled in a while. For now we set up the 301 redirect(s) on their server we take over. Because of the extra costs we will cancel the server in a few weeks/months. What is a common way to keep 301 redirects alive after cancelling the server of company we take over? I hope someone can give me the help I need in this one. Thanks in advance! Cheers,

Site architecture & breadcrumbs
Hi A client hasn't structured site architecture in a silo type format so breadcrumbs are not predicating in a topical hierarchy as one would desire (or at least i think one would prefer) For example: say the site is called www.fruit.com and it has a category called 'types of fruit' and then sub/content pages called things like 'apples' and 'pears'. So in terms of architecture that should be: www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit/apples and www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit/pears etc etc The client has kept it all flat so instead architecture is: www.fruit.com/types-of-fruit and www.fruit.com/apples and www.fruit.com/pears As a result breadcrumbs follow suit and hence since also not employing logical predication dont reflect the topical & sub-topical hierarchy I have seen that some seo's at least used to think this was better for seo since kept the page/s nearer the root but surely its better to structure site architecture in a logical topical hierarchy so long as dont go beyond say 3 or 4 directories/forward slashes in the url's? Also is it theoretically possible to keep url structure as is (flat) and just edit/customise the breadcrumbs to reflect a topical hierarchy in a silo structure rather than change the entire site architecture & required 301'ing etc in order to do this (or is that misleading or just not possible?) Cheers Dan

Re-using site code.
Hi, I'm looking at launching a new website, and am keen to understand whether re-using the basic code behind one of my other sites will cause me an issue. I'll be changing the directory structure/ file names, etc - but it will basically leave me with a very similar-looking site to another in my portfolio - using code thats all ready out there, etc. Thanks, David

Google has not been visiting my site
Hi I am working on a site at the moment http://www.cheapflightsgatwick.com and i had the site using a different template and in the search engines for the search term cheap flights gatwick we were fourth and for the term holiday magazine we were 12th in google but now we are not even in google on the first page for the search terms. But now after changing the template in joomla our rankings have gone out of the window. It took me about a day to sort out the site with the new template so i was not expecting any problems with the search engines but for some reason there is. If you put into the search engine www.cheapflightsgatwick.com then you will see that google has not visited the site for four days and also it is not showing the description and instead it is showing details about joomla. Can anyone let me know if there is anything i need to do to sort this out and why google is taking so long to visit my site

Can I noindex most of my site?
A large number of the pages on my site are pages that contain things like photos and maps that are useful to my visitors, but would make poor landing pages and have very little written content. My site is huge. Would it be benificial to noindex all of these?

Impact of 401s on Site Rankings
Will having 401s on a site negatively impact rankings? (e.g. 401s thrown from a social media sharing icon)
