How to best automate batch naming of product images
-
On an ecommerce website with tens of thousands of products, product image file names are auto generated by your system, and are often just a string of numbers and letters. We optimize our callout images and heroes but I'm questioning if we are missing a big opportunity with our product image names not being optimized. Does anyone have any insight on a smarter way to automate batch naming for thousands of product images?

I'm a big fan of optimizing images to use descriptive names; it seems to have worked quite a bit in the past. Search engines often will look for contextual clues about the content of an image, and this includes ALT tags, photo captions, and the image name.
In a Moz blog posting by Kasy Allen in 2011:
http://moz.com/blog/is-optimizing-photos-more-important-than-you-think"The Google image bot definitely seems to be looking at filename and the alt tag, but it also looks at a lot of the same factors that the Google search bot looks at - title tag, meta description, heading tags, links and anchor text. If we are already focused on optimizing our individual pages, maybe it's time to remember that image optimization is just as important. Oh, and it also seems to be important that you host your own images, but you already knew that, right?"
I've found that it's best to name each image during the product creation process. It's nice to have the product name and SKU in the image, and I also like to use directories, too.
So if a product named Canon 50 mm f/1.4 lens in category Canon Camera Lenses, you might want to name it here with this directory structure:
http://www.domain.com/images/canon/DSLR/lens/canon-50mm-f-1.4-lens.jpg
But if you need to do this in a bulk fashion, you can create the category and directory structure using a spreadsheet and the concatenate feature. You can also do a find-replace on spaces in a product name to insert dashes, etc.
See the screenshot here: http://www.customerparadigm.com/images/moz-screenshots/concatenation-bulk-renaming.gif
You could also use LightRoom or Photoshop to help automate photo names as well.
I hope this helps!

Products To Products links
Hi,
Image & Video Optimization | | Tormar
I want to create good internal linking structure, but I have a problem with product to product link. E.g. I have a new model of product: iPhone 6, and old iPhone 5, and I want to put link from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6, but if I make link like this, I dropped for a few positions. Also, if I have similar product e.g. photography Kit for iPhone 6, and I put a link from this additional product to iPhone 6, I will lose my position.

What's better for SEO an Optimized Image URL vs Optimized Image File Name?
I would like to know what is best practice for optimizing images for our website. Is it better to give an Image an optimized filename Or an optimized URL for SEO? Or is it better to do both? Would there be any harm in doing both if they are identical in their format? Any help would be greatly appreciated. With thanks, Kate

Video Sitemap for product pages
Hi all- i have a video that talks about a particular type of product and have it set up on every page in that category. I am in the process of updating our video sitemap and want to know if I should list all the occurrences in the sitemap or just one? I had asked a similar question earlier about placement, but here I am specifically interested in the sitemap. Thanks! Ken

Best Video Sitemap plugin for wordpress? And do I need both a video sitemap and a normal one?
Hi all, I currently use the Google XML Sitemaps plugin on my wordpress site. But we've recently began adding (self-hosted) videos that we've been careful to markup with the relevant schema. However, there's a couple of things I don't understand and am hoping someone could help: Do we need a separate video sitemap that either works alongside Google XML Sitemaps or replaces it? If we do need a video sitemap, what's the best video site map to get? (we are using the Thesis theme so can't use the Yoast one unfortunately as they don't play nice together...) Thanks for your help! Andrew

Does anyone know a browser extension that could show me the position an image has in Image Search?
Hello and thank you for your attention! Does anyone know a browser extension that could show me the image ranking in Google Image SERP - similar to what SEOmoz Tool does for regular search - shows you a number under each result, in the left side. Thank you so much!

Is it a bad idea to include a single keyword phrase at the end of the business name in Google Places?
I'm concerned about this for local SEO and citation purposes. It's not spammy and it flows well, and it sounds like a logical extension of our name, but I'm concerned that it will make it harder for Google to pick up our citations. Any thoughts?
