Showing on page 25 for url keyword/ brand, is it a penalty?
-
Hi
I have a site which shows on page 25 in G serps for the main brand keyword which is also the url its a .com and as far as I can see has no penalties and has unique content. The keyword itself has no competition and the site should be no1 in G for it. Our site domain is 11 years old.

Thank you for your insight and you are right its a tough decision which needs to be made before we move forward. I will research it a bit more over the weekend and make a decision on Monday.
All the best and have a great weeekend.

Sites that have algorithmic or manual penalties can still have sitelinks. I have no idea if your site has a penalty or not, I'm just saying there's a real risk from looking at your backlink profile that you may have an algorithmic penalty now, or will get one (or manual penalty) in future. It depends on a number of factors, including the accuracy of your disavow.
If you're starting to rank well for competitive keywords, then that would be a case for staying put. Your visibility is yet to update in SearchMetrics, which is still low though obviously jumped when you launched the new site.
If you moved to the .net, you would have to give up on the .com, as redirects from it would pass the toxic link equity to your new domain. In a worst case scenario, if you stuck with the .com and build lots of quality content, got links and promoted the brand, then your bad link past caught up with you then it would be very difficult to cut free and move to a new domain.
That said, if you moved to .net now there's equally no guarantee that this is completely necessary (as you said you're starting to rank). You're clearly aware that It's a huge decision to make and not one that you would want to take lightly.
Since you're at the point where you're just setting up a new site and probably about to pump money into marketing it pays to be aware of the options. I don't have enough information to say which one you should take.
Hope that helps,
George

Thanks George these are all very real risks however, we are starting to rank for some tough highly competitive keywords which puzzles me because if we had a penalty surely it would be sitewide rather than specific terms. Also I noticed than if you search our domain moneysite.com on google we have sitelinks, which I am not sure you would have if a penalty was imposed.
We could go with .net which we own however, could we 301 redirect .com to the .net or would that cause issues for the .net.

Hi again,
The horse may have bolted on this particular issue, but here's what I would have done in your position:
If there's no existing traffic to the domain that you want to keep, and the .com isn't critical to the branding (it's not in your logo) then personally I would have put the site on a another domain that you own already (e.g. moneysite.net - assuming that is clean) and just killed the .com.
Having fought through a few Penguin penalties for existing brands, I can't imagine anything worse than launching a new site/brand that has someone else's dirty link laundry attached to it. There's still a chance you might get a manual penalty in future which will hang over like an axe.
It really depends on how much resource you have to start building real quality content that gets links and shares, and keep ontop of your disavows and potentially ongoing link removals.
It also depends on how critical organic traffic is to your business. If you have $50K a month to throw at PPC or affiliates then it may not matter.

Hi George
We have analysed all backlinks and disavowed a ton of toxic links that the previous owners created. We did evaluate the domain before the purchase however, we did not have access to the previous owners webmaster tools to see if a manual penalty was imposed at that time.
-
Your site appears to be indexed OK, but your visibility is low. I checked that "money site" is a low competition keyword you should be ranking better for.
Taking a look at your backlink profile (opensiteexplorer.org), it appears that there are a ton of toxic links pointing to the domain. This is almost certainly going to affect your rankings through Google Penguin, unless someone's already gone through a stringent disavow process.
Before you launched a new site on this domain, was it vetted to see if your predecessors had done any link building badness?

Hi George
Thanks for the response.
Although the domain is 11 years old has only recently gone live so we cannot judge analytics data. There are no manual penalties that I can see in GWT however, we only acquired the domain in January 2014.

Hi,
You'll need to provide the site details if you need help in diagnosing a penalty.
As a starting point I would log into Google Webmaster Tools to see if a manual penalty has been applied, I would also look in Analytics to see if your organic traffic overall has dropped across other pages on your website.
An algorithmic penalty is harder to diagnose, but can usually be recognised by aligning traffic drops with dates of Google algorithm releases.

Should I have multiple websites for my different brands or one main website with different tabs/areas?
My client creates apps. As well as the apps they create themselves, they have made some of their own that cover various different topics. Currently they have individual websites for each of these apps, and a website for their app making business. They are asking whether they should just have one website - their app building site, which also includes information about the two apps they've built themselves. My feeling is it's better to keep them separate. The app building site is trying to appeal to a B2B audience and gain business to build new apps. AppA is trying to help carehomes and carers to streamline their business, and AppB is trying to help workplace and employee welfare. Combining them all will mean lots of mixed messaging/keywords even if we have dedicated areas on the site. I also think it will limit how much content we can create on each without being completely overwhelming for the user. If we keep them all separate then we can have a very clear user journey. I would of course recommend having blog posts or some sort of landing page to link to AppA and AppB's websites. Thoughts? Thank you!

Adding a secondary keyword or other keyword variation to the title tag affect ranking for primary keyword?
Hi Moz Community, According to Google Search Console, the main keyword for our website is undergoing a low click through rate, even though we have good ranking for that keyword (top 3). Currently, our homepage's title tag is "Brand Name: Primary Keyword". I am thinking about adding a secondary keyword or other keyword variation to differentiate our company from others in order to possibly increase the click through rate. Will this affect the current ranking for the primary keyword? Also, is the clickthrough data in Google Search Console accurate? Thank you! Best, Raymond

Should we show(to google) different city pages on our website which look like home page as one page or different? If yes then how?
On our website, we show events from different cities. We have made different URL's for each city like www.townscript.com/mumbai, www.townscript.com/delhi. But the page of all the cities looks similar, only the events change on those different city pages. Even our home URL www.townscript.com, shows the visitor the city which he visited last time on our website(initially we show everyone Mumbai, visitor needs to choose his city then) For every page visit, we save the last visited page of a particular IP address and next time when he visits our website www.townscript.com, we show him that city only which he visited last time. Now, we feel as the content of home page, and city pages is similar. Should we show these pages as one page i.e. Townscript.com to Google? Can we do that by rel="canonical" ? Please help me! As I think all of these pages are competing with each other.

Keywords Ranking Varies When Search changes Location/City (Not Google Places)
We have a client that are ranking well on most Australian cities for competitive keywords except Google Sydney. If you toggled the cities on the search field when you search for a keyword, their places are almost exactly the same except for Sydney on which they can't be found at all in the Top 100 results. The keywords are not city specific, they are general commonly searched keywords about health. This is not a Google Places issue. The search result shows the right landing pages of the site for their respective keywords. Any ideas or experience on this kind of situation. Much appreciated Louie

No Results for Google/Bing Keyword Search by Domain Name
My site is bestwebconsult [dot] com When I do a search for my exact domain name in Google and bing, it does not appear at all. I have submitted a sitemap to Webmaster Tools. It is a relatively new site completed with in the last month. Built with Joomla. This leads me to believe that something is misconfigured on the website. Please advise, thanks!

Alexa site title shows as "302 Found" on search result pages
If you search for the site "ixl.com" in Alexa, for some reason, it's showing the site as "302 Found" instead of showing the website name, IXL. If you drill into that, it shows the site as ixl.com, but underneath that, it says "302 Found" again. Every other site I search for seems to show the site's name properly. I have no idea where it's getting this "302 Found" from. Does anyone know how to fix this? Here's a link directly to the search results page: http://www.alexa.com/search?q=ixl.com

Targeting Keywords at Home page or 301 URL?
Background info This is a new site and I am using Wordpress for a CMS not a blog and I have set a static page as the home page. The problem is when I configure the home page as a static page in wordpress it sets a 301 redirect to that page, which is this domain.com/software-consultancy (so the software-consultancy page is now domain.com). I thought about creating a separate Home page but I didn't see the point as the pages would be almost identical. **"Should I target keywords to the home page?" ** If I start link building using the phrase "software consultancy" to the home page should I link to domain.com or the 301 redirect URL domain.com/software-consultancy ? My thoughts are that if the URL has the keywords I am targeting in it will help with SEO. Or should I create a separate home page and just link the company name back to the home and have a separate page for "software consultancy" my thought is that having exactly what the company does on the home page would be better. But I don't want to lose out on search engine traffic by not having the keywords in the URL I am going to be link building for. I guess if I link build to the 301 redirect URL I can always revert back to this URL if I want to change? FYI here is my site structure: The site is for a small software consultancy and I have the following structure: domain.com/software-consultancy -- (Set as Wordpress static Page so essentially a 301 redirect to / ) domain.com/software-consultancy/areas domain.com/software-consultancy/areas/london domain.com/software-consultancy/areas/new-york I would really appreciate some feedback on this, even if it's experience / advice and there is no exact answer. Many Thanks, J
